For Harrison Phillips, the NFL Was Always His Why

You know, I'm keeping my mouth shut with all my football friends in New Englandn- it's Pats and Giants territory - but I'm excited.  I'm a big believer in McD, more than any coach in a long while.  I talked myself into Gailey and even Rex, but McD is different.  He really seems to know what he is doing.  The right players are responding to him in the right ways.  Kyle coming back was a sign that McD is doing the right things.

The kind of guys they're signing and drafting is another sign.  This team is hungry.

I live in Connecticut too. I actually know a lot of delusional Jets fans too. Trying to stay quietly optimistic about our future. My stock line is “The Bills are moving in the right direction. Love the coach and GM.” We May be a year away, but good times are coming very soon?

I’m pretty sure Dareus was motivated as a rookie...and his hunger was unparalleled.

Might have been a case of the munchies...

What you're all missing is that this is not in fact a tiny football. This is in fact a regular size football being held by a giant sized man. In associated news....Buffalo Bills are being sued by General Mills for stealing and using the images of the Green Giant. /joke

“We were recently told by coach (McDermott) at the end of practice that everything you’re doing has to be like you’re winning. Even getting out of your car. Look like a winner getting out of your car. When you lace up your shoes, lace them up like a winner. Do everything playoff caliber.

Really excited to see what Phillips and Edmunds can do to help transform this D with White on the back end. McBeane are very methodical in building up McDermott's specialty, the defense.

Last year the Bills knew they could not rebuild the whole Defense, so they focused on a unit, the secondary. They invested in two under the radar FA signings and a high draft pick in Poyer, Hyde and White. They hit gold.

This year the focus was D-line. Again 2 under the radar FA's in Murphy and Star L. Again a high draft pick in Harrison Phillips. I have to believe the thinking is that improved D-line pressure will immediately help an already good secondary and solidify the rush defense, forcing throws toward Poyer, Hyde, White and Davis.

I expect McBeane to focus on LB next year through FA and draft. I believe none of the LB FA's will be big names, but steady contributors or guys who fit the scheme and process. I also don't think they expected Edmunds or Phillips to be available when they were in the past draft, so they moved to get the guys they wanted and it helped move along the process. LB is probably a year ahead of schedule if Edmunds pans out.

I wouldn't be surprised to see 1 or 2 mid level LB signings and another round 1-3 draft pick on LB next year. I believe those LBs will fill in the weaknesses or compliment the D-line and secondary (pass rushing specialist, run stuffer, or coverage types) as needed.

The big splashes will probably continue to be on offense next year with Daboll firmly entrenched as OC. Matthews and Zay Jones were probably supposed to be the big splash on offense last off season and it was a whiff. But they countered and tried again with Benjamin. Allen and Daboll are the obvious big moves this off-season. No one could have predicted the melt down at OL.

I see a plan evolving and it actually makes sense. I hope Dirty Harry is a part of it for a long time.

This is an excellent post.

almost as if you were calling the shots.

If true , and i think it is very nearly Bills Football is going to be better each year and perhaps become a regular contender for  good span of seasons.

They brought in folks who can stop the run day one. and created a fine rotation as is The McD way.

and then they draft perhaps the best LB available who is getting all the 1st team reps . His job will be easier that Prestons was just because of this D line.

Any body think that old adage "defense wins games " is Sean's thinking?

Most folks here loathe that phrase. But i always liked it.

Thanks for the well thought out post RCR

Stanford is one of the few legit clprovrams that has real student athletes (besides Ivy League Alabama :) ).  I will take their players on my team any day of the week.  Also, I’m on the David Shaw train if we need a new head coach ever.

Hear hear. I think Shaw is pretty committed to being an institution out here, and I hope he never leaves. I do wonder how he would translate to the NFL - that's not skepticism, I'm just legitimately curious. Stanford's success is based on the trenches and smash mouth rushing that wears other teams out. The Tyler Gaffney years were the pinnacle of this style, but as they say, the NFL is a QB driven league.

Interesting.

The ball has numbers written on it - 7, 51, 114, 35, 77, ... and the Bills logo

Was told by a friend he tried the numbers in some sort of powerball lottery.

Not really interested in lotteries so not know which one.
