Roster Review/Special Teams

Recommended Posts

Here is part 3 of my roster assessment.  The Special Teams.

The other 1/3 of a game is in the area of special teams.  Win the battle of field position, maximize your ability to score points when the offense gets bogged down from the 40 yard line on in.

The Bills have an outstanding place kicker with a big time leg who has proven to be a clutch performer.  Punting is a strength, and the Bills have assembled a roster filled with smart, fast and versitale players very capable of winning the punt coverage and kickoff coverage aspects of any game.  The return game will have some new faces who have yet to perform in the bright lights of the NFL and their talents will soon be seen.

My thoughts are that the team is poised to have a top 10 overall special teams unit this season

Yes. One site had us rated at 14 last year but that is with Shamarko Thomas (who?) who is no longer on team from 8th (6 rank drop). Another went from 24th to 7th (17 rank rise) so it hard to tell.

The Buffalo Bills charted the best single-season improvement under new head coach Sean McDermott, a leap of 17 spots from 24th in 2016 to seventh in 2017. The signing of free-agent kicker Stephen Hauschka paid dividends for the Bills. He kicked 29 of 33 field goals, including a league-high seven from 50 yards or more.

14. Previous ranking: 8
Free agent acquisition Stephen Hauschka was tied as our second-highest graded place kicker in the regular season, and his average starting field position of 24.0 allowed on kickoffs was helped by the stellar play of coverage men like Shamarko Thomas (nine special teams tackles).

Yes and was only coach retained by Coach McD.   IMO the best coaches do not try to completely raze team to ground but preserve as many as the good personnel as possible.

The following coaches were let go and very quickly hired at same or higher level indicating they were not just coaches hired because head coach was comfortable with them:

  • WR Coach Sanjay Lal - Hired As WR Coach with Colts 1/25 2017
  • QB coach David Lee - Fired 1/31 and was hired as QB coach of Cleveland Browns.
  • OL assistant coach Pat Meyer was fired 1/31 2017 and became OL coach of Chargers (promotion although he did that role when Kromer was suspended).
  • OL coach Aaron Kromer - Fired 1/31 2017 and became OL coach of Rams (he already was offered job as early as 1/24 2017) and then on 1/30 , 2018, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay promoted him to run game coordinator, after Matt LaFleur left to become the offensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans.

Note: This means there are three current OL coach / run game coordinators in NFL who are/were coaches for Buffalo Bills - Krammer, Rick Dennison and McD's buddy Juan Castillo.
