Harrison Phillips Senior Stats vs Suh

Recommended Posts

Was just looking over college DT stats; Phillips compares well with Suh, identical height and weight,  Phillips had a few more total tackles and Suh had 3 more sacks and 7 more tackles for a loss, but stats are pretty close.

What am I missing, did Suh face tougher competition? The small differential in numbers may be far greater than I am giving credit for, but I would have though Phillips would have been touted higher.

Found this on NFL.com:

Weaknesses
  • Has build of a guard
  • Has higher center of gravity than most nose guards
  • Plays too straight-legged robbing him of base width and balance
  • Finds himself on the ground too often
  • More active than athletic
  • Looks plodding in lateral movement and change of direction
  • Unable to sink and shift with adequate change of direction
  • Quick lineman can cross his face and find positioning to wall him off
  • Lacks a plan as a rusher
  • Can get better with using hands as rush weapons
  • Secondary rush can get bogged down

"I'm kind of surprised at how high the media scout types are on him. Where do you play him? Loses balance which makes nose tough and he doesnt have athleticism to play with three-technique. But I get that he makes a bunch of plays and he's obviously a strong guy. I just see him as a day three player." -- NFC West Coast scout

If only a high end offensive lineman had also dropped to us.

Rome was not built in a day. I’m praying for one or two more decent random signings, and a nice influx next year. I firmly believe in getting a QB and building both lines.

Party pooper.  Good coaching can fix some of this.

Other than that, what's not to like? Don't forget, they said Kyle Williams was not strong on the point, could be  driven off the line, and likely would never be a starter.

I love the pick.  He was the guy I wanted the most in the draft.

I didnt think he would be there in the second. I was so happy he was there in the third. He is going to play DT for us for a long time.

The tape says it all.  Suh was physically dominant in college and had an explosion that Phillips simply doesn't have.  Phillips gets the job done but lacks the explosion.  That's why a lot of his tackles are past the line of scrimmage, not behind it like Suh's.

I feel like suh faced better olines and more smash mouth offenses in the big ten

while Harrison faced more open fast paced offense in the pac 12

2 different styles

Which is even more impressive for Phillips.

Thats not true at all. Phillips had lots of TFL and tackles at the LOS. He had to play nose against double teams, he did not have many pass rush opportunities. Phillips has more athletic ability than given credit for.
