Turning Point for the Pegulas

Recommended Posts

April 2018 has the potential to be the pivotal moment in the Pegulas tenure.  I stress it as the potential to be.

Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen is the franchise quarterback prospect they coveted and they were able to get him without sacrificing their second 1st round pick.  Shockingly, by protecting that pick they were able to maneuver to get Tremaine Edmunds.  This draft could be remembered as the draft where the Bills got their leader on offense and defense for a decade.

Buffalo Sabres
They finally WON the NHL draft lottery.  With that win they get to select Rasmus Dahlin, who looks to be a transformative player not just for the Sabres, but potentially for the Defenseman position in the league.

No one knows how this will ultimately play out, but the past 3 days could very well be the turning point in the Pegula's ownership legacy.

So to sum up, the Sabres are complete garbage and unwatchable for 3 years & get rewarded for their awfulness.  Then Pegula gets a man crush on an inaccurate cowboy and drafts him over the better pro prospect because he will shut up and play football. Go Pegula!!!

just kidding, I love them and hope you are right.  Terry is an awful speaking but Kim is hot and they genuinely love Buffalo.

They have been complete garbage and unwatchable, and then fans would get screwed as we watched them lose the draft lottery too.  No McDavid, no Matthews.  Just misery.   As you said, they finally got rewarded for their awfulness.

Exciting times for sure. Playoffs for both teams next year

To their defense, the Pegulas inherited garbage, especially the Sabres. So yeah, it is taking awhile to get these bad teams better. But it's not like they came in and made anything worse.

Well that’s just like, your opinion man

Yes it is....backed up by soul crushing horrible depth and horrible players save for a few on the Sabres, and an offensive line in Flux for the Bills.

I can't say what went wrong with the Sabres.  By all accounts they spent loads of money and hired more scouts than Golisano did, but the results have been worse.  Was Lindy Ruff the key all along?

As for the Bills, in just their 3rd full season of ownership, the team finally returned to the playoffs.  Not bad.

Dahlin could be the Superstar defenseman we have never had.  The Sabres have never had a Norris Troohy winning defenseman.

I see see things looking up for both teams.

All Terry needs to do is find good people to run the teams and get out of the way.  Easy to say, apparently not that easy to do.

Trust the process. It worked how it should for the Sabres. Too bad there ain't no Ovechkin or Crosby to reward the process.

Then why was they radio announcer  (a non sports station) blathering yesterday that the Sabres actually have a less than 20% chance of selecting first overall?  He highlighted also that the odds this year are actually worse than the 'tank' year, and the Sabres might well not pick until the third, fourth, or fifth position. Weekend intern playing fast and loose with the facts?

Bills- Cordy Glenn barely played last season. Dion Dawkins stepped right in and was spectacular. Incognito is 35 years old and was definitely on the downside of his career. I believe Groy can fill that spot without losing much. Wood was a very underrated center that’s what’s going to hurt the most. We signed Bodine from Cincinnati to replace him. We drafted an absolute monster in Teller who may even start this season. On paper we’re a better team right now than we were in Jacksonville

Sabres- Now this might be a bit of a stretch to make the playoffs next year. Reinhart was on absolute fire at the end of the season. They need Eichel and him to bond this summer. Bffs everywhere they go. Just like every year, the defense is severely lacking. Dahlin would immediately be our number one defenseman. Lehner probably needs to go as well, but I put a lot of the goals scored on our terrible defense

the turning point was when they fired Rex & Whaley and hired McBeane.

Well, the Pegulas fired Rex and brought in McDermott, who essentially fired Whaley because McDermott wanted his GM - Beane.

I like what is going on so far, and Beane appears to have done a great job being the point man in his first draft as GM.  We might be better this season than most expect.  I don't want to get ahead of things, but the potential is there.

Sabres tenor has been a series of avoidable blunders.

Mistake 1.  Keeping Riger and letting him sign Erhoff and Lieno to ridiculously stupid contracts.  Reiger was better when Golasono curtailed his spending.  We saw how stupid he could be with an open checkbook.

Mistake 2. Firing Ruff and letting Reiger put an unqualified Rolston behind the bench.  Ruff lost the team and Rolston certainly was not the guy to restore order.   Reiger should have been fired first,  and replaced by an experienced GM with an NHL track record who then decides Ruff’s fate.

Mistake 3.  Hiring an unqualified Pat LaFontaine, bringing in his buddies from Penn State, and creating a confusing organizational mess, leading to LaFontaine leaving and Murray running the mess and making it worse.

mistake 4.  Murray was a poor choice to rebuild a team.  This is on LaFontaine but Terry P could not see the obvious problems.    Murray never ran anything on his own. and made countless errors.  He traded valuable assets and got very little in return and he did nothing to improve the farm team.  Huge gaffs.  Murray will never be an NHL GM.

They did have less than 20% odds but they still had the best odds to win. I believe it was 18.5%

Those were the correct facts. The NHL changed the percentages in the lottery, making it harder for the bottom team to win.

The McDavid year we had a 20% (maybe slightly more) chance of winning, yesterday it was 18.5%.

Also, they had three lottery picks yesterday, if the Sabres did not get picked in any of them then they drop to 4th.  Fourth was the lowest possible slot and the odds were slightly greater than 50% that we would be at least 3rd.
