A current look at the heralded 2014 WR class

Recommended Posts

I don't think this is a reflection on the players performance. It's about where the FA WR market is going ( up up up), cost certainty of drafted players and what positions are valued most by GMs. It seems QB, pass rushers and pass protectors are the most valued positions, and many teams will recycle most skill position guys every few years . This WR class has produced ( unlike the classes since) and have been highly valued in the FA market by teams looking for them. The weakness of the current draft crop is a contributor to that as well.

What a deep class. Shame they used two #1s for Sammy when they probably could've traded down and grabbed two receivers who were better (Lee, Adams, Landry, Bryant).

Landry better? Anyway, too much to spend on a move up for a non QB. Well worn territory though, file it away in the book of Bills draft errors.

Bumpy in terms of movement between teams.

But there are a lot of good players there, an awful lot.

The movement isn't all that surprising, really. Teams generally have somewhere on the order of 10, maybe twelve core guys. Around them they generally draft new blood and bring in FAs. The rate of roster turnover is really high. And if I were to guess, I'd guess it's higher at WR than at many other positions. To be a core guy on your team at WR you have to be very good because WR salaries are really high, and it's a position that depends an awful lot for it's production on a QB to throw to you.

As for overall turnover, look at this article:  http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000340908/article/which-teams-have-had-the-most-nfl-roster-turnover

It's from April 2014 and it's looking at players remaining from the 2011 team, meaning players that lasted three years and are still on the roster just after FA began the fourth year.

And the number of players remaining range from 7 (Colts) to 25 (Packers). The median was 16. Meaning most teams kept in the neighborhood of slightly less than a third of their players for 3 years and an offseason up to April.

Based on those numbers, the 2014 WR class looks about how you'd expect.

Or could have still mad the trade but selected Khalil Mack.

That post is as awful as your name.

None of those receivers are better than Sammy.

The fact that WRs move around in Free Agency does not mean they aren't any good!  I'm not sure what the moral of this story is supposed to be.  Many of these names are still widely known and productive today....even if they are on their second or third team.  They are not out of the NFL altogether.

Based on what? His untapped elite talent? I'll concede he is better than Lee.

Yep - not a "bumpy ride" for these guys. A ton of success in that draft. You have basically 4 guys with 4K rec yards. In 2015 you only have Amari Cooper on track for that. In 2016 only Michael Thomas. Only D Hopkins from the 2013 draft did it.

Plus 9 dudes with 19 or more touchdowns.  Also crazy.
