Barnwell: 5 Offseason Moves The Bills Should Make To Improve in 2018

In full disclose - I'm not the biggest Barnwell fan.  I  think that Bill Barnwell is an ok reporter.   I took major issue for his pieces defending Tyrod Taylor to the extent that brought racism into the discussion.  It resulted in me calling Barnwell out on Twitter and him responding with a snarky remark and blocking me.

So here are Bill's 5 moves that he thinks the Bills should make this offseason.  Maybe it's just me, but it seems that he doesn't really follow the team very closely - which would be understandble as a national NFL reporter.  While everything he suggests make sense - I feel like the thinking here is very basic and not very insightful.  Let me know your thoughts

In case anyone wants the reader's digest version -- here it is:

1. Sign Vontae Davis

2. Move on from Tyrod Taylor

3. Explore the trade market for Cordy Glenn.

4. Bring back Preston Brown and Kyle Williams.

5. Acquire two quarterbacks

Pretty straight forward moves. Preston Brown is the only one on that list I could go either way on.

I just don't think he's athletic enough for what McDermott wants in a MLB.  He actually might be able to play the SLB position like he did in Jim Schwartz's defense.  Pretty sure they will go in MLB in round 1 or 2

I have no interest in bringing Preston Brown back. I want them to get a vet QB and move up to draft one. I would like to bring Gaines back and I would rather move Glenn to RT then trade him. Kyle I would like to see back but If he goes, he goes. The only untouchable players on this roster IMO are Shady and White. Anyone else, I am not going to get to upset about.

Rosen is at 3...colts say give us white and 21 do you take the deal? Or mayfield if that’s your guy?

If Davis can be signed to a fair contract, I'm fine with it.  He visited several teams, however, and is hoping a bidding war erupts over him.  I don't want the B ills to over pay.  Yeah, i time to move on from Tyrod if an upgrade can be obtained.  By all means, explore what Cordy Glenn can bring in a trade.  As far as resigning Preston Brown and Kyle Williams is concerned, I'm OK with both moves, however, don't pay Preston Brown so much you feel like you have to start him.  You have to try at least to find someone more athletic.  I think the Bills are perfectly willing to sign Kyle Williams to a short contract at a fair price.  I'm just not sure Kyle wants to go another year.  Only he knows if his body is up to it.  Obviously, if the Bills do part with Tyrod, they will need to acquire two QBs.  Peterman would be the only real QB on the roster at that point (Joe Webb being a wildcat specialist).  Even if Peterman somehow happened to develop into a starter in training camp (a possibility I don't completely dismiss) the Bills can't count on it.  Even if they do acquire a sure thing, I would think they'd want competition for backup/developmental QB on the roster.  I also think the Bills need to add quality at WR. and outside linebacker.

Yep, shallow.  Unless he explains who the two qb are, where we get them from, and what we have to give up or pay.  Then it might be deep.

Explore the trade market for Glenn and try to re-sign two of our best defensive players, I never woulda thought of that.

I'm out in the cold on the Vontae Davis love, can anyone clue me?

I'd tend to agree. I think Davis is being viewed as a cheaper alternative to Gaines, tbh, with the assumption that Gaines will get a far bigger offer than the Bills would make him. He might actually be a better player, as well, although that would be debateable.

I'm not enamoured of the 'trade Glenn' notion unless it can be done for a serious move up in the first round of the draft. I think we are better off keeping him, and using him at RT, where he won't have to move his feet quite as much.

I don't think he currently has that much trade value, after the poor season he just had (fitness wise), but hes no trouble, works hard, and when healthy is a good player. I'd rather keep him, get him healthy, back to playing well, and then look to trade him, after next season, when if my scenario plays out, he will have way more value.

I'd be happy to see the much maligned Brown return, as I don't think he's a problem. You might get a 'hometown discount', and if you do, you need to snap it up. The interior of the D-Line is a bigger problem than Brown is, if we don't persuade Kyle to return.

I’d be extremely upset if they broke up Poyer and Hyde.  Both played extraordinary last season and paired with White gives us one of the best Defensive backfields in the league.  Hopefully they can resign Gaines or acquire someone of similar caliber.

This is news?  He's obviously been monitoring TBD and has spun the most popular ideas into one article.  BTW, #2 AND #5 are essentially the same thing -- moving on from Taylor implies that they need two QBs, a starter and a rookie.

Doubt he, or anybody, really, monitors us. Do you get much when you monitor the Jets or Fins or Pats boards? I've tried it a few times and didn't get much.

In any case, I like Barnwell a lot generally, a very smart guy, but yeah, not a lot new here.

The Preston Brown thing is interesting, maybe. The thoughts here have been that we need more speed and that that means that Preston should go. That's not a bad take, but the opposite is just as reasonable.

I think his mentioning of Henne and Moore is kind of interesting as well.

But yeah, fair enough, no hot takes here at all. Not news. Should it have been? He's doing a series and one on every team. Should he be expected to have news on each one?

No, they could bring in one and keep Peterman. They may like him more than you do. My guess is that they're gonna keep three, either on the roster or using the practice squad. Just a guess, obviously, but certainly possible.

Davis is going to choose the West Coast, so on to the next FA target or draft.

I prefer replacing Brown either through FA and or the draft. To inconsistent at times, mediocre in coverage, not worth 7.5-9M IMO.

Add DL in the draft and FA.

Get me a serviceable WR like Cooper Kupp.

Just to be clear, BR, my thumbs up was for you and not necessarily for Barnwells' moves, which I agree are a little basic.

You did a nice clean job with your disclosure, too.

I haven't read Barnwell all that much lately, but over time his takes on the Bills have ranged between apathy and downright disdain.  I remember coming off the 9-7 year when Marrone left and we had brought in Shady and crew, he said we'd be one of the 5 worst teams in the league.

The concern with #2 is that it wouldn't be a good idea to take the position backwards by moving on from him without having someone actually beating him out. If the next guy comes in and actually takes the job from him then fine, move on. If not, it makes more sense to keep him until someone can come in and take the job by beating him out. Make the next guy earn the job first before sending him on his way
