Total Fail. First of all TT is not a free agent. He has a contract with Bills for 2018. No way to apply a franchise tag. Only two options: keep him for 18 mill cap hit. Cut/trade him for 7.64 dead cap.

You can not cut someone and then apply a tag.

For conversation lets say he was a free agent right now and Bills could then apply a tag.

Franchise for QB is what? 24+ million this year?

TT would immediately sign it tying Bills hands for 24+ mill cap hit and salary for TT for 2018. No other team would likely trade for the guy now as his salary is too high. If Bills trade him now before 3rd league day year, he is a 7.64 mill cap hit.

If they trade him after league yr 3rd day Bills have 13.64 cap hit and team taking him in trade have a 10 mill cap hit. He would have more trade value then.

side note of tags: changes are brewing. Cousins will file grievance if Deadskins try to tag him to get assets in a trade. Intention of tag is to keep players and work on long term contract. They have clearly shown with the asinine stupid trade and needless over market contract with Alex Smith they have no interest in giving Cousins a market rate deal to stay and can not feign fake interest like they could have had they not already agreed to A Smith deal. Even if they negotiate, Cousins loses leverage as Deadskins would want a contract that is easily tradable and Cousins wants a market contract.

Arbitrator would not look kindly on Deadskins for doing this. Not sure how he would rule but UFA would be the most likely rule. This would set a precedent and a right one, as that was the intention of the franchise tag rules.

When Bills tagged Byrd they wanted to keep him and tried to sign him. Same with Clements. Peerless Price may have been a feign by the Bills but was plausible.

One other issue you didn't even mention, assuming TT doesn't sign the tag right away,is that it also ties up the Bills from signing other FA's as this money is now committed to TT

There's "Outside the box" and then there's "Box? What box?"

This idea is beyond both.

Even if TT's contract was expiring, nobody is going to trade picks to sign a mediocre QB with a franchise tag salary. That's a triple-losing scenario.

We all need to think outside the box when it comes to building this team. That means taking an unconventional approach to obvious team decisions and strategy when it comes to dealing with other teams...especially QB needy teams like Denver, Cleveland, Jets and Cardinals (not to mention Pittsburgh, Jax, New Orleans and even New England).

If Beane was to put the franchise tag on Tyrod this year, we would have suitors that would want to interview him. Not saying they will sign him without question, but with a limited pool of experienced QB's available, and Tyrod being a game manager type, chances are 75% that another team would sign Tyrod and we would reap the rewards.

What rewards you might ask?

A nonexclusive franchise tag involves the same salary offer as an exclusive franchise tag, only the player can negotiate with other teams. The player’s current team can match any offer sheet. If the old team declines to match the offer, it gets two first-round picks from the other team as compensation. This is the more commonly used franchise tag.

That was a good laugh, thanks.  Looking forward to the posters who take this serious, should be fun...

FYI: Thinking outside the box does not include smoking copious amounts of crack and heading to the nearest internet connected computer.

I did mention it. But yes I did not detail it like what you said.

"TT would immediately sign it tying Bills hands for 24+ mill cap hit and salary for TT for 2018."

but I guess this was all a joke post. A good one though, and got us talking.

Why not pick his option up and then franchise tag him?  I'd buy two first rounders for $16 million.

You pick hos contract up he is under contract for 2018. How in the Hell are you going to franchise tag him

I think CBA doused that box in starter fluid and set it ablaze... No more box

The purpose of the tag is to allow teams to retain prospective free agents longer than their contracts stipulate. It typically is used on one of the team’s best free-agents-to-be, in situations where a team wants to prolong their control of a player, or hold on to someone they feel they may not be able to keep otherwise. It’s not a player-friendly rule, generally, as it prevents them from hitting the open market. A player has little control over whether or not he is tagged.

If we don't pick up Tyrod's option, then he becomes a free agent. So he clearly falls within the parameters of a "free agent to be". Once again, you need to play with the wording of the NFL Rules and push the envelope or the box.
