MOCK 1.0

Mock drafts do get me a bit excited because it is something to look forward to during the off season, but of course they will change from time to time with dealing with Free agency and so forth but I did compile my first mock and would love to get some feedback.

1A. - ROQUAN SMITH, LB Georgia ( TRADE!!! 1(21), (2), (4), Future 2019 pick )

1B. - DA'RON PAYNE, DT Alabama

2. - MASON RUDOLPH, QB Oklahoma ( TRADE!!! (2), (5), (5) )

3. - WILL HERNANDEZ, G UTEP

4. -  DESMOND HARRISON, OT West Georgia

As an UGA fan, I like the enthusiasm, but a trade up for this team should only be for qb.  (And it's Roquan, btw.)

I don't like Mason Rudolph, but I suppose I'd be okay with taking him in the second.  Mocks before FA are really too early, because you don't know what areas may have been shored up.

As much as I personally don’t think Rudolph should go in the second round, I think this is a pretty realistic mock for what Buffalo might do. It wouldn’t shock me if they traded up for a LB with the skills that Roquon possesses. Having a pair of stud LBs is a huge part of the defensive scheme and I think Payne is a pretty good target with the other first round pick.

I’d personally be very upset if they traded up for Rudolph but I guess we’ll see how it goes.

If it were up to me, I’d be fine with moving up for Roquon (would prefer a QB though) but wouldn’t bother moving up in the 2nd or taking Rudolph in the 2nd at all. I’d rather get a pass rusher, corner, or RB there and take a QB in the 4th instead. I don’t think Rudolph is any better than the guys you’ll get there and I think the other QB will probably have more upside than Rudolph.

I love mocks.  It's just fun to see what people think.  I love debating them too.  It has taken awhile for me but I'm all aboard the Baker Mayfield train.  However, I wouldn't sell the farm for him.  I really like him at QB because he's a QB with a linebacker mentality.  HE wants to HURT defenses.  Any QB with that mentality I have to be a fan of.  I was resistant at first.  I'm going to watch some tape today prior to East/West Shrine.

Just watch some tape on Iowa CB Joshua Jackson this morning.  My coffee got cold because to me this guy is special and fun to watch.  Would really like him in a Bills uniform.  In any case I'll do mock 1.0 after East/West.

Jackson is a STUD. He has elite ball skills. I just can’t see the Bills using a 1st on a CB. I think that they re-sign Gaines and take one later on in the draft.

Probably right.  I'd prefer Jackson over Gaines on the perimeter honestly.  It's just a preference of mine.  I can't get passed that presupposition.  I view Gaines as a nickel back.  But he has shown he can play on the perimeter.  The reason why I prefer a drafted guy is that when you look at the CB position in NFL Free Agency it is equivalent to the QB position in the draft.  Guys get overpaid and once the market is set it's just a nuisance.

I don’t disagree on the cost. The thing about the Bills is that they may have the best secondary in football when healthy. That’s not hyperbole either. What they did with minimal to no pass rush is incredible. I’d pay Gaines (even if it is a little more than you want) to solidify that part of the team. You can upgrade from Johnson in the slot and be elite. You will have one unit that you don’t need to worry about. You already need to address QB, RB, WR, DL, LB and OL (at least at some level). I don’t think that the Bills have the luxury of taking Jackson (even if he is as good as we both think).

Unless it is to get a QB, it would take a lot to justify trading up in the draft this year.

Normally I think the same way, but Beane gave some very telling comments at his press conference- basically that our extra picks don’t just give us the ability to move up in the draft, but also the flexibility to move down...I think he is going to try to maneuver all around to get the guys he wants...McD desperately needs a MLB to run his defense, and because the QB we draft likely won’t be starting right away, I could see Smith being the first pick.

This is true.  Eliminating one position with the exception of depth is good to do going into the draft.  I hope we can also get Star here so that only one other starter is needed from the draft and after that, depth.  Would also like Norwell on the OL.

I hope that you are right about re-signing Gaines.  I originally thought he was just a throw-in in the Watkin's trade, but he is a good CB.

I’d like both of those signings a lot. I would keep Glenn too to be your RT.

I don't think this teams in a position to move up for a non QB, there's just too many holes on the roster. I like the rest of your mock though.

True.  I hope the re-sign Gaines.  I like his game a lot.  But he does get dinged up a lot, and if Jackson is there at 21-22, he might be the best player on the board and in a passing league one needs all the CB's they can get, especially with ball skills.  Jackson is a beast.

I would be on board with trade downs and even trade ups in the 2nd and later to get guys they really like.  I just can't see trading a lot to move up in round 1 unless it is t get the QB that they like.  At the moment, I'd be willing to give up a 1 & 2 to move up some for the QB that they like, but I think getting high enough to get one of the top 3 will be too pricey and who know if they will pan out anyway.  None of them strike me as can't miss guys.

If they can't get a QB that they really like, I would even consider trading one of the 1sts for a 1st next year and a later pick this year.  There is no point to taking a QB in round 1, if they aren't pretty sold on him.

I hear ya about not wanting to give up too much to move up...I was hoping to maybe combine a 2nd & 5th rounder with pick 21 to move up and get Smith...then take Rudolph with pick 22...or we could trade 22 to move down, picking up and extra 2nd and 3rd rounder
