I mean there is no better time to do this with NFL fans dwindling.

I would be a fan of this if it is used as a minor league for NFL. NFL needs a minor league. Every other sport has one.

It just seems pretty extreme especially with the CTE issue going on

Another league could def work, if they used it as an NFL minor league. If every team already had a tie in with an existing fan base, it would certainly help the interest. Every NFL team brings 90 guys to camp and there are so many other UDFAs on the cusp of getting a chance but not able to get an oppertunity. If each nfl team was able to send some of the extra camp bodies and practice squad guys etc to a developmental league in the offseason..it would benifit of parties. The NFL would have another revenue stream, people would get more football, teams would have a place to develop players without needing to use roster spots. It could work but it would only work with NFL involvement. Plus you could play in smaller venues close to where the nfl teams play. That would create a more affordable experience for family’s. Maybe the Bills team could play in Rochester or Toronto. Just saying.

They've tried to bring the USFL back about a dozen times since it folded. I'm not sure if this one would work either, but it would be fun to see it again.

a minor league would be great, but when the upstart tries outbidding the NFL it is lights out soon

start watching the CFL, it's a step up from college, an option QB game, and nowhere near the NFL's power or talent levels

Ya for sure. I'm Canadian and for sure know where you are coming from.

The only part that bothers me about the CFL is some of their rules. (If you miss the field goal, you get a point if the other team doesn't return it out) In saying that, the NFL has a lot of dumb rules as well

with the 25 yard end zone and the goal post on the goal line the end zone is often in play for returns, and yeah biffing a 25 yard FG shouldn't get a reward

and they take it so seriously heading westward starting with Winnipeg, and a few crazies in my life in Toronto and the Hammer who are really into it still

For sure. Saskatchewan probably has the best fans as they sellout pretty much every game. There are some die hards In Toronto but it's honestly not taken too serious around here. The Hammer definitely has a lot of die hards there

Say what you want about the XFL......  Did it ultimately fail the first time around?  Yes, but it wasn't without a lot of positive things coming out of it.  In fact, the XFL changed the way the NFL presented its product.  From cameras and angles, to more on-field microphones and overall presentation, the XFL revolutionized the way football was visually presented. (Plus, their football looked pretty sweet.)

That said, the XFL failed for a lot of reasons, but the primary one is that they legitimately thought they could compete with the NFL.  Obviously, this is not going to happen.  However, if they rework their ultimate goal and focus more on the development of players and giving guys that don't make the final cut in the NFL another outlet to play the game, I think they could do something good.  Today, more-so than ever in the past, there are a lot of talented football players that just aren't quite ready for the NFL for 1 reason or another.  If the XFL comes back and is not presented as an over-the-top sideshow lie it was the first time around, and it presented itself as a well put together, organized, and serious league so that they can attract better players, there might be some potential there.   And, obviously, the rules would have to be adjusted in a way that makes for a bit of a safer game.  Do they have to go as far as the NFL does?  Definitely not, but rules would have to be modified.

Also, remember that the TV landscape is a lot different than it used to be.  While I am sure they would love a national TV deal, if that isn't feasible, the WWE already has a distribution outlet with their own WWE Network.  So, their network is a resource that they didn't have before that could be used to help them if necessary.

All in all, while it may be a long shot for it to work, I think with a different mission statement, a better product with better players, and a more professional presentation, there is room for more football, especially during the NFL off-season.  I think any football fan should root for it to succeed because, in the end, more places for guys to play and develop their skills is a good thing for the NFL.

If there's any truth the rumors, TV Distribution is the key.

The original XFL was partnered with NBC who at the time was left out of the big money NFL contract.  But I don't think NBC was ever totally on board.  The XFL was a risky investment to go up against the NFL/Disney/Fox/CBS/DirecTV behemouth. I suspect some at NBC didn't want to push too hard to begin with in the hopes of getting a seat back at the table, as they eventually did with Sunday Night Football

The UFL never really had any kind of network distribution

Now in 2017, a new football league doesn't need the alphabet broadcasters to distribute their product.  Partner with Amazon or Netflix or Youtube and stream it all online.  Kickoff is at noon but you can start the stream from the beginning whenever you feel like it and not miss a play

All good points here.  I'd also run it as a spring league, air when the NFL is not in season to give fans of football someone to watch yet not compete with the cash cow that is the NFL.

streaming services certainly change the network landscape of revenues streams.  Only problem I see here is the initial push to have fans watch.

...ever wonder why the NFL is the only major sport without a minor league/developmental system?.......MONEY....all of the other majors have draft systems depending on collegiate ranks to provide players as did the NCAA to the NFL.....but that is no longer a major focus of the NCAA IMO ...boosters, butts in the seats and mega million bowl games is their focus versus serving as NFL minor league....look at the woeful plight of the QB spot for starters....NFLE folded because it was a MONEY LOSING proposition.....so sinking NFL ratings, advertisers possibly rethinking their exorbitant dollars investment, etc may be a good thing, but I doubt it....
