Great MMQB article on Tyrod/Bills decision

Lots of great stuff in here. Right on the money. Too much to copy and paste all the good quotes, so I only picked one. Check the article out, though. Worth your time.

"I like Taylor, I’m hopeful for the Bills, and I’m bummed it didn’t work out. In short, for a flawed team, what Taylor brought wasn’t good enough, and he really hadn’t shown any signs that a drastic improvement was on the way. Are the Bills better off with Nathan Peterman under center? We have no idea yet. But they made the change because they wanted something different. This team was speeding toward the edge of the cliff, and sometimes you just gotta turn the wheel and hope for the best."

There are a lot of Mom's out there who need to buy Christmas presents this month and don't give a darn about who the Buffalo Bills QB is.

They just don't want to get surprised on Christmas morning  that the jersey they bought on sale is for a guy who isn't the starter.

A big blessing to McDermott for helping to clear the air on this subject this early in the Holiday Shopping frenzy.

Spot on - it’s like this guy actually watched the Bills, what a crazy way to write an informed article.

We can only hope the Buffalo media (especially WGR), read this too...Schopp’s head might explode ?

He dissects the issues with Tyrod well and we can all agree we don't know what we'll get from Peterman yet (I'm a little more hopeful than he seemed...but its fair to be skeptical of a 5th round rookie), but I'm not sure about his assessment as the entire team being bad.

"none of it matters because the Bills are a bad team. Not in the way that the Ravens/Dolphins/Raiders are bad, but truly bad."

"Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa are going to dunk all over his offensive line on Sunday."

"This won't be garbage time against the Saints shell defense. He'll be working with one of the worst supporting casts in football against a quality defense."

Those quotes seemed a bit harsh. Yes, it's tough feeling great about this team after the disastrous way in which the last two games have gone. But worst supporting casts in football? Yes the receivers were pretty bad to start off the year, but now your starting three are Benjamin, Matthews, and Jones (seeming to have gotten over the yips). You have Shady, Clay, DiMarco, and O'Leary. I'm not claiming they're one of the best supporting casts, but one of the worst? Really? I don't know. Yes, the O-line has been struggling, but I still doubt that they are one of the worst in football. As for the defense, they looked horrible the last two games and he was correct in pointing out the pass rushing issues, but they have also put together 5 or 6 really good games. So, I'm not totally counting them out yet. But they do need to figure out the D-line issue (pass rush and against the run). Maybe more blitzes, maybe having brought in a bigger body (Coleman), etc. will help.

Anyhow, time will tell. I am hoping that the last two games were a bad stumble in a long race rather than a team finally being exposed as the truly bad team that they are. And I am hoping that Peterman will be a spark, playing the offense the way the OC designed it---which should hopefully make the receivers and O-line look better.

But then I'm a Bills fan...ever hopeful.

Great article. Thanks for posting it. I love this quote:

"Consider this: Buffalo currently leads the NFL in turnover differential at +11 through nine games. And, incredibly, they have a point differential in the red (-12).

"It cannot be overstated just how atrocious you have to be to pick up an extra possession per game and still get outscored on the season. Over the previous 20 seasons, 41 teams have posted a turnover differential of +1 per game or better over the course of a season. If rabid squirrels gnawed off both your hands, you’d still have enough fingers to count how many of those 41 teams had a negative point differential that season (and you know damn well that not a jury in the world would convict those squirrels)."

Sounds good to me!

"I saw the deliciously snarky I guess it's Tyrod's fault the Saints ran for 298 yards takes that were so clever they could have been right out of a Leno monologue. The fact is, the offense’s 118 net yards over nine drives in the Saints game was just as egregiously bad as the defense's performance. They were both awful. You can’t raze your entire defensive roster midseason. If you want to make the kind of drastic change the Bills needed to make, and you think there’s even a chance you might have an upgrade on your roster, the logical spot is at quarterback."

Another great quote, and a notion that's been seen quite a bit since the QB change (from people trying to sound clever). So, because the defense has been  worse than the offense the past 2 games, the coach isn't allowed to try to improve the offense? That silly take came from more than one local sports reporter.

Snarky writing style but solid analysis. This team needs a major talent infusion. To that end one source of hope are the picks we've stockpiled. We have 7 games to see how drastically we need a qb. Then I hope they address the OL,  DTs and LBs.

And finally some cap space. They also can utilize some draft capital to trade for players, if needed.

While certainly better than last year, this Defense was never that good: "The defense went from bend-don’t-break to curl-up-in-the-fetal-position." . . . so, so, true!

As another poster said, great read, but really depressing . . .  again, because it is all so, so, true--and we all knew it, but the fast start gave us that cruel hope. Now, it is back to being a regular Buffalo Bills season and waiting for all those miracle picks next year to make us better. And that, too, is a cruel hope.

Yes, I knew we were bad when we had a THREE to zero turnover differential late in the 4th quarter against the Bengals, and also had a 75 yard kick return, and somehow were LOSING the football game.  That performance was every bit as bad as the saints or jets games disguised by the turnover ratio and the kick return.

Probably would have been easier to start out bad. Oh well, some of those games were certainly fun.
