Some of it is just getting rid of Ryan but still the FO should get the credit. But, going into the game with a rookie WR that can't catch as the only viable WR is inexcusable. Even with Mathews they are a below average to bad group. They must make a trade. They need a true deep threat or they will never get the running game going. Their plan is to get the foundation for the roster set this year and then next year is the key year with all those draft picks. They've just lost too many guys that arent able to be adequately replaced right now especially on offense...Clay was a killer loss today... If the wanted to rest Glenn until Tampa then why dress him this week? Dawkins is much much worse than CK. The run scheme blows too. Ducasse is on the coaches, mills is garbage and knew Dawkins would struggle in pass protection but you can't address every thing in one year. Next year the lines will be addressed. Its half time and 5 different targets have caught a ball for them today. Watkins has zero catches and one target. At some point there has to be a reason why. The excuse before was he didn't have a QB. Now the excuse is they have too many weapons? Shouldn't Watkins be better than all their weapons? Watkins is on a team with multiple downfield threats. That contributes to the season that Gurley is having, as he's facing fewer 8 and 9 man fronts than he did last year. While the Rams receiving group is dividing the targets, their running game is taking advantage and making plays and scoring points. The Bills don't have the down field threat to take the heat off the running game. Watkins, or a receiver like him, would help the offense immensely, because he would move defenders out of the box. Not having Watkins, or a speedy downfield threat to replace him, is a hole for the offense. And since the defense looks as though it's ready to win now, not addressing the lack of speed on offense is frustrating to fans who value wins over draft picks. The offense lacks explosiveness and the play calling looks like its trying to build 15 play drives. The decision to pass on Watson and trade Watkins looks bad today. And Whaley built a top five defense and the #1 running game in the NFL, and in the end it wasn't good enough. The front office's inattention to the offense will kill a season that had potential because of the play of the defense. Depends on what you are trying to do. Um, trying to win football games. Be honest now. Did you think this was a playoff team at the beginning of the season? Before you saw how good the defense was? Did you honestly think this team had potential? Be honest. McBeane made some bad decisions too and I like them a lot. We went into the game with four CBs total. No one does that. One of the four was signed two days ago. He gets a horrible pi penalty late, was guy that missed containment on Cincinnati last TD and dropped late Int. Tough play but he shouldn't have been playing. They also inexplicably started ducasse who sucked all preseason, had not played one game, and he sucked the whole game. Plus they didn't get a new WR. If he was great then tag him ot let him walk for a big contract and get the comp pick. Gaines is good but Darby was serviceable too. The downside for me was losing Watkins for possibly nothing. The only way they get a comp pick is if they don't add more players in free agency than they lose. That possibly prohibits them from making moves to better the team next offseason. Plus even if they do get the comp pick, it wouldn't come until 2019 and would be a very late 3rd at best (technically it comes after the 3rd round is over and before the 4th round starts). Tagging him would likely cost around $15-$17M. That would take up more than 1/2 of their available cap space ($27M according to spotrac) There is also the stuff about Sammy's bad attitude. When you're in the fragile beginning stages of trying to rebuild a culture that's been broken for a long time, the new Bills staff may have felt keeping him around for this season wasn't worth the risk to their culture change (or something along those lines) especially when they could get pretty decent value back in return for him. So they traded him for a 2nd round pick in 2018 (that will hopefully provide more immediate help than a potential 2019 3rd/4th) and a pretty darn good starting CB. I don't like seeing such a talented WR traded away either and I hate the hole that it left on the Bills roster (assuming Sammy stayed healthy), but I can still see the downside of keeping him. I like that this front office isn't just thinking about this season, the future be damned. They are thinking long term. The Bills aren't good enough to be perennial contenders the way they are currently built, so the front office is doing something about that instead of just trying to constantly patch holes.
