Yeah the critiques of Mickey and how he uses the bullpen are fair.  At the same time though is that Mickey's fault Diaz can't close out games?  Is that too much to ask of him.  I mean that's why he got signed as this superior closer.

I mean I suppose you can make an argument as well Familia shouldn't have pitched in the 7th.  At the same time though is that too much to ask from him to hold a 1 run lead?

Frustrating.

Frustrating beyond belief. The plan looked great:

Trade for a young, elite closer....Diaz has been average.

Bring back a former closer who has success as a closer for a playoff team....Familia has been consistently craptastic and getting worse with each outing.

Sign a lefty specialist...is Justin Wilson in the witness protection program?

Push back your closer and 8th inning setup guys to innings 6 and 7...Gsellman has been good on occason, Lugo has been marginally better.

IMO, VW did a reasonable job remaking the bullpen but they are flat-out not performing. It's on Mickey and the coaching staff to right the ship, but Lugo looks like the only ray of sunshine right now.

At this point I'd like to see Mickey do what he said when he first came in, no set roles. Let Lugo close a game or two. Bring Diaz into the 7th. Could the results be worse than what we've seen?

In a bold response to the Yankees trading for Edwin Encarnacion, the Mets dealt cash to the Indians for reliever Brooks Pounders on Saturday.

Though I could have gobs of fun with the name alone, this is way, way more amusing:

"In 38 major league games with the Royals, Angels and Rockies from 2016-18, Pounders accrued an 8.92 ERA."

Digging a bit deeper into his stats: In 38.1 innings of Major League play, he has allowed 38 runs, 61 hits (13 of which were homers) and 10 walks.

He made his debut Sunday for the Mets. Here it is for those who missed it!

Do you seriously think the Mets traded for Pounders because the Yankees traded for Encarnacion?

That ranks amongst the stupidest things I have ever heard. Ever.

I'm not saying he'll be a saviour - and the stats you posted don''t inspire any confidence - but in spite of your cute little gif he threw a scoreless inning in his Mets debut.

It's so ridiculous I was sure everyone would know it was sarcasm, which is why I never thought to disclaim it. :D

Sadly, if he was to say those same exact things today, he'd be celebrated because his kind are out there and they are proud.

Huh?

If someone said that today they'd likely be banned from MLB forever.  The NBA made a guy SELL HIS OWN TEAM for saying less.

All good and understandable. :) My point was really that the Yankees and Mets are going in opposite directions. Encarnacion is still dangerous at 36 (unlike Can-owww), the Yankees are even more stacked and they still have a strong farm system. Us... oy. We're like four really good players and a bunch of rudderless warm bodies. I think we'll be active sellers at the deadline.

It's no secret that I have zero confidence in the manager and GM -- the complete opposite of my feelings about the guys running the Bills, who IMO are much closer to a championship than the Mets. And that hope for the Bills is what's keeping me going at the moment, sports-wise. I don't see it changing till Callaway (at the very least) and BVW are gone.

Saw a stat on ESPN earlier that had me saying, "Nah. No way. We can't be *that* bad."

Have we really blown 17 saves in 33 chances?

No we really haven't. We've 'only' blown 16 of 33 :)

So basically 50% save percentage. League average is 66%. If we were just average we'd have 6 more wins and be right in the thick of things. If we were better than average (that's what Diaz was supposed to bring) we'd be feeling pretty good about ourselves.

EDIT: looked a little closer at the stats. Mets are 6-7 in games where they have one or more blown saves.

^^^

This and come up with a new role "pitching strategist".  Still to be determined if this guy is actually going to be in uniform.  Sounds like more just management pushing d-baggy analytics with this.

Ultimately I just feel you can't polish a turd

Mets fire pitching coach and replace him with 82 year old.   Only the Mets.

Did they lock him up to a long term contract?

EDIT: to his credit it looks like he hasn't aged all that much since 1970

Sports radio is having some fun at Regan's expense today. The line that got me was "He pitched to Ted Williams!"

The sad part is, I can’t be completely sure if this is a joke.
