How are the Mets looking this year?

The local Jays are up the creek with the BOS/NYY franchises balling.

If the Mets were in the AL East they'd need a paddle.

If everything breaks right the Mets have a legit shot at taking the NL East. But at the plate we appear to be way too left-handed and after DeGrom the starting pitching has questions with regard to durability (Thor), believability (Wheeler), consistency (Matz) and sucktitude (Vargas).

(10 m signing bonus)

No trade

Opt out after '22

32.5 m club option for '24

I think that is a fantastic contract for Jake AND the Mets.

Alonso made the roster...

Padres did the same thing with Fernando Tatis Jr.  I'm not sure if any team held back a rookie to gain an extra year of control.

This is pure speculation on my part, but with the collective bargaining agreement up for renegotiation in 2021 maybe the owners plan on giving up the service time loop-hole.

I heard Mickey on the way home today. Alonso is starting against the righty tomorrow and will bat high in the order, probably 2nd or 3rd.

He got his first hit out of the way.?

Mets had 5 hits today...4 of them came from guys who never had a hit for the Mets before today.

DeGrom picks up where he left off last year and Calloway does the smart thing and limits him to 93 pitches.

And I just noticed that Lugo struck out all three batters he faced.

Another stat from today that I just came across.

DeGrom had 10 strikeouts and Scherzer had 12. First time since 1970 that opening day starters each had 10 or more strikeouts (Dave McNally and Sudden Sam McDowell).

That's really surprising to me. Nearly half a century.

My boy McNeil,he's a ball player that every manager wants on his team.

Alonso?

He's a fantastic ballplayer. Watching him and Alonso in Binghamton was enjoyable. You could tell Alonso had a major league swing. His line drive power in person is impressive.
