dave mcbride Posted December 27, 2016 Share Posted December 27, 2016 the same GM that traded back and risked losing him, brought in orton to replace him, brought in tyrod and cassell and made it a completely open competition, etc.... you are latching on to news narratives that just arent backed up by his actions. hell, if you love the news narratives, whaley allegedly wanted cardale last time we opened this can of worms. finding out if EJ belongs as a backup (or possibly part of a competition) next year is not a bad thing. also, this move would be happening regardless of who the backup is. He brought in other people because he was working with coaches who HE didn't hire and who told him that they thought Manuel sucked and they wanted someone else. They just don't want to risk Tyrod getting injured and his contract extension kicking in. Would like to see Cardale too so hopefully he dresses as #2. It's a sound move regardless of how strongly they feel about his play or how they might address his option EJ: If anything, this is a tryout for the backup QB role, not starter - From that perspective, it makes perfect sense - One last look to decide whether we should retain him for no. 2 or 3 No, because if the Bills keep him they owe somewhere $12-15 million next year. Next years is the option year on his rookie contract, and like Gilmore he was a first rounder. It's why Gilmore was paid so much this season. Who else is there... and they haven't seen EJ in this offense for well over a year and have never seen him in this offense with the starting WRs. Not sure what the issue is. Manuel's contract is up and he is not as good as Taylor. Some here are no doubt looking forward to celebrating drafting 13th instead of 17th -- as if that will change things. It's a smart move business wise. The game means nothing and if Taylor gets injured, a la Mariotta and Carr last week, then Buffalo is on the hook for the remainder of his contract. Dorkington Posted December 27, 2016 Share Posted December 27, 2016 What this does: - Protects the Bills options regarding Tyrod - Lets the Bills/Lynn/Whaley have one last look at EJ (will help decide his future here as well) - Let EJ have an opportunity to 'try out' one last time before hitting the FA market - Protects Cardale from being thrown into the fire when he isn't ready, and will possibly be learning a new offense next year anyways All in all, a safe move. He is a FA unless the Bills pick up his option years, which is a fortune. No one is trading a first for anyone who lights it up against a team as bad as the Jets are right now. The risk of losing EJ was overblown and once he was drafted, it became Whaley dead set on proving himself right. He traded two firsts to prove EJ was the guy and so we couldn't take a QB high in 2015. He only brought in Orton after Marrone freaked out, Whaley was perfectly content to play out 2014 with EJ, which is why he was the only real QB on the roster all summer. He traded for Cassel, but just like Kolb, that was competition that you could say "they are a little better but EJ has more potential!" And still play him. He signed TT to placate Rex and had serious doubts he could challenge EeeeeJ. Only after TT made a pro bowl, Whaley extended him but that's only because the only thing more important to Doug than EJ is his own job security. If Whaley wanted Cardale, he'd be out there. The former is a lost cause who will not be on the Bills next year and the other guy is one that a sensible team would probably keep given the lack of credible alternatives next season.
