I'd have to agree with Alpha. While the NE win is nice, you can't overlook the fact of who was playing QB , or that the Bills had a game on film vs HOU they could look at and see what the Pats MO was with Brissett at QB. I don't think they believed they'd be facing Garrappolo . The Bills O has looked better under A Lynn, but they lack match ups in the passing game. If the Bills can find a way to get McCoy and Clay more involved and continue being diverse, they could possibly overcome deficiencies at WR. The odds are it catches up to them at some point so the next 3 game stretch against flawed opponents will be telling.

This is IMO a very fair and accurate ranking and assessment of where we are at.

 

What the outside world sees: We beat a Cardinals team that in week 2 looked like the SB contender they were supposed to be, but in weeks 1, 3 and 4 looked like a team with major struggles...so its hard gauge the quality of that win since we don't really know if it was more us dominating them or them in a funk. Then the NE win has its obvious asterisk of a 3rd string QB and a hobbled Gronk. So while the win was fantastic, its hard to gauge what would have happened if even Jimmy played let alone Brady. There were wide open throws missed that Jimmy most likely hits given his short on field resume of looking pretty good. Who knows if 16 points would have been enough to win that game. Now add that into the loss of Sammy leaving us with a marginal at best WR group, and there are questions around our ability to keep winning.

 

My personal assessment...this team has looked very good for 2 straight weeks against at the very least 2 quality opponents and deserves some credit for those wins because regardless of either their struggles or who they were missing they were still tough opponents. However, given the issues around AZ and NE we must keep a level head about those wins before we get ahead of ourselves. The real test is going to be this next 3 weeks against lesser competition...can this team keep playing as inspired and fired up as it has been against the Rams, Niners, and Fins before we see the Pats again. We really should go 3-0 during this stretch, and I suspect if we do then we will see the Bills in the top 10 when we see Brady in Buffalo the week after that stretch.

 

And first up is the Rams...not as good as the 3-1 record, but also a dangerous opponent with that sick DL. The Rams offense has struggled all year, so if we can put some points up then it will be hard for them to keep up. But if its a close game, then the Rams chances rise significantly, especially with an unreliable kicker in Carpenter here.

 

Yup. Playoff teams have to beat the teams they're superior to. Buffalo is unquestionably more talented than the Rams, better than the 9ers, and better than the Fins -- at least on paper. Those three games are must wins considering the tough stretch of schedule up ahead, and of the three, this week's game worries me the most. The Rams aren't very good, but they play hard and are talented on defense. It's going to be a big test for McCoy and Tyrod this week.

Merely a guess here, but thinking Rex Ryan's job is not in jeopardy right about now. So will these Bills break their fans' hearts? If the defense performs as it has the last three weeks, some integral parts get healthier (please, Sammy Watkins), and LeSean McCoy continues to rip off Shady-style runs, anything is possible. There are no world beaters in the AFC right now. The Patriots already fell to these guys (though they were without Mr. Brady). The Steelers are vulnerable in the secondary. The Broncos have trouble stopping the run (hello again, Shady). You get the point. #Billsmafia

Overrated NFL Team: The Bills have won three games in a row! They're great again! That's what the public is thinking, but it doesn't seem like that is the case. Buffalo's three victories aren't overly convincing. The Arizona win was nice, but the Cardinals have since proven to be a middling team. Prevailing in Foxboro may look good on paper, but the Patriots' quarterback in that game, Jacoby Brissett, was so banged up that he needed thumb surgery immediately afterward. The Bills just beat the Rams, but Los Angeles was missing some key defenders and was still tied at 16 before Case Keenum's horrible pick-six.

There are legitimate reasons for the media to question the Bills recent success. OK. But, few teams consistently blow out opponents. Few teams have balanced attacks and solid, aggressive defenses, and reliable STs. Nearly all teams are weak in one area or another. The Bills are a pretty balanced team, pretty good in all phases (with rushing making up for passing on offense), without obvious weaknesses. They belong in the second quintile, I think. A quintile is 1/5th of the total, or 7 or 8 teams in the NFL. There are 7 or 8 teams clearly better than the Bills, at least now. The Bills belong in the second group of 7 or 8 teams. Exactly where they fit in that group will vary week to week.

 

If not too many more serious injuries happen, and we get Shaq and Sammy back, we could challenge to get into the top quintile.

 

It's nice having this discussion, and not being Cleveland.

The media ( and I) probably won't buy in this year no matter what they do until year end and we see what we have then. The market is too small for the media to care much in general, no big new star to market (other than Rex), the franchise is carrying 16 year old bags full of suck. It's going to take time. Look at the Bengals. Good team, tons of winning seasons... but you never hear much. Bills are kind of like that. Not really "marketable". Tiny fan base relative to most of the league. No stars. It's like Cincinnati, or Detroit-- who cares? It's Buffalo, for crissake .. who cares? Now the Raiders? Super marketable as they are "the Raiders". They have a brand.

 

Bills need to build a brand of some kind, based on something, not sure what it is. Maybe it's Rex's snarky personality (seriously). He may be it. Something for the media to build a brand around. Sounds corny, but that's what the franchise needs. A brand identity. Not sure what it is right now. Maybe TT takes it to the next level, becomes Russell Wilson with actual QB stats to go with it. Becomes Vick but with class. Something. We shall see.
