James Harrison pondering retirement

I'm sure his 2nd career in molecular engineering awaits.

 If i'm not mistaken, isn't this the same guy who turned down the White House invite after his Steelers won the Super Bowl, saying that the invite meant little to him, because, "If the Cardinals would've beat us, they would've gotten invited instead" LOLOLOLOL

Not sure if it was him or not but whoever it was they are correct.

I agree with Harrison if the NFL wants to play 2 hand touch then they should just come out and say it.

Also for all you saying he is a baby how would you feel if 10% of your salary was taken away from you because you did something you have always done?

In 2010, which could be an uncapped year, the contract gets tricky as Harrison's base salary drops to $755,000

I don't think the NFL is trying to get players to play 2 hand touch. But when you PURPOSEFULLY attempt to injure a player, you should be held accountable. And lets be real, Harrison was talking alot of crap afterwards, talking about he thought he was sleeping, and oh, i didn't really hit him that hard...rather than be humble, he's bragging about it! I think he should've gotten fined even more. And everyone, INCLUDING James Harrison knows he's not going to retire....dude is a freakin douche and a drama queen...

Isnt there a little bit of hypocrisy here folks? Granted Im all for players getting fined or suspended for blatant illegal hits. But out of one side of the NFLs mouth theyre saying were worried about player safety and then out of the other they say they want an 18 game regular season.

They just want the $$$. They fine you if you hit too hard, but will injure players for more $$$ by adding games. As a fan, the last thing I want is someone like top player getting injured playing some meaningless 17th game.

Harrison, who was fined $75,000 for a hit that knocked Mohamed Massaquoi out of the Steelers' win over the Cleveland Browns, said Tuesday on Fox Sports Radio's "Into The Night with Tony Bruno" that he might consider retirement.

"I'm going to sit down and have a serious conversation with my coach tomorrow and see if I can actually play by NFL rules and still be effective," Harrison told guest host Judy McDonald. "If not, I may have to give up playing football."

Boo hoo James. This guy has got to be kidding me! You get fined 75,000 for hits that were obviously with intent to harm, and now you're ready to give up football??

you call this guy a linebacker?

tedy bruski would have hit these guy harder and then healed them instantly. and let's be honest, by the time this radio interview was over, guest host judy mcdonald would have been pregnant with twins.

Harrison said what every defensive player thinks of doing to the opposition. I think he's stupid because he said it on an interview in the worst possible timing, but I can't fault the guy for playing the brand of football we all love.

Lets not pretend that we wouldn't like to have a hard hitter like Harrison on our defense, all defenders go out and play to put a hurt on the other team within the confines of the rule.

What do the players think?

1. Brian Urlacher

"It's freaking football. There are going to be big hits. I don't understand how they can do this after one weekend of hitting. And I can't understand how they can suspend us for it. I think it's a bunch of bull.

"You know what we should do? We should just put flags on everybody. Let's make it the NFFL - the National Flag Football League. It's unbelievable."

2. Steve Breaston

"Say it's third-and-15 and you go across the middle. As a defender, you try to dislodge that ball so he doesn't make the catch. Now, it's what, you let them catch it? You make the tackle, but they pick up the first down? I don't know."

3. James Harrison

"To really be honest, I don't think it's going to change the way I play the game. There's a lot of hoopla going around that I'm a dirty player. I'm not trying to injure anyone. It's a physical game, it's a violent game. You're going to get hurt."

4. Adrian Wilson

"It's really hard because you only have that split-second to determine what to do. It's crazy. I try my best to use clear judgment and make clear decisions, but a lot of those collisions are unavoidable. You're either going to let them catch it and take a step to see what's going on, or there's going to be a collision."

The thing that bothers me is his attitude. He plays a physical game which I like and sometimes guys get caught up in the moment and go too far. I can live with that.

But Harrison is happy to hurt people. He likes doing it and thinks he hasn't really injured the player if they're just "taking a little nap." I'm not sure how a player can have this attitude/PoV in 2010 when everybody knows how serious concussions are but I'd be happy if all players with this attitude retired so guys who are out there just trying to help their team win while not demolishing another player's career can get the accolades they deserve.

And btw, WTF is up with the player's union? Why is it that they only protect the interests of their member's wallets and not their health?

See the NFL is cracking down because of all the money they are paying retired players with head injuries. that is the bottom line in all of this. Lessen brain injuries, they lessen the amount of money they have to pay out for players not putting butts in the seats.

I can't see why that is a bad thing.

Same guy.

John McCain came in second in the presidential election. I don't see the Steelers lining up to visit him at his home. So it works both ways.

oh jeeze, are you attempting logic again?

Surprisingly you are right, but winners want to associate with winners. The President and SB champs are both winners. The Pres. does not have enough time to invite the other 31 teams to the White House. Conversely, The SB Winners don't give a damn about the losers of the election from the other parties. You think the Saints would meet up as a team to meet the Socialist Workers Party representatives of the '08 election? No, not all.

The reason the SB champs go to the White House is because it is an honor. If you let your ego and political ideology get in the way, then you are a fool. That is Harrison in a nutshell. FWIW, Harrison didn't appear at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave after they won their previous Super Bowl during the GWB administration.

Good point and I thought the same thing.

The 18 game season has to be scrapped, in light of the injury epidemic.

It's impossible to tackle "correct" every time because the players involved are each moving, oftentimes at full speed, and making positional adjustments while doing so. A player can be sound technically and be in position to make a form tackle and can end up making helmet to helmet contact. Oftentimes a very fine line exists between a great tackle and a blow to the head.

This still doesn't mean you should be leading with your helmet. If you look at some of the replays of these hits, you'll see the defender clearly leading with his head. If these guys have been paying attention over the past 20 years, they should know that leading with your head can result in spinal injuries...Dennis Byrd being a perfect example. All they need to do is keep their head up and they won't hit like that.

I think the problem is the league hasn't properly defined what's illegal and what is allowed. Is the rule only applicable to a defenseless receiver? And what is a defenseless receiver? Are they only concerned with head to head blows? Is a shoulder or a chest or an arm or a leg blow to the head OK? All can do the same, serious damage to the defender. What if the defender places himself in danger by allowing his head to be impacted by the defender. Should this be the defenders fault and open him up to fine and suspension?

Agreed that the league needs to define what's legal and what isn't, but we can't completely absolve the defenders of any blame. Again, I go back to the way they're hitting. Ronnie Lott rarely (if ever) would lead into the hit with his head.

And who's to judge the fault in such cases? The NFL. They might not be an exactly impartial party seeing as how the Commish is a former Jet employee.

Seriously?

I'm sure that what Harrison did yesterday he's done countless times before and never was penalized nor fined and certainly not suspended. Could you imagine if this incident happened the game before the super bowl and Harrison was suspended for the game because of something he's done countless times in his career?

I think the NFL acted hastily on this without properly doing their due diligence.

They probably did act hastily, but when you have three impact players who now have concussion-type symptoms and can not help their respective teams, then it becomes an issue. Something needed to be done and a precedent needed to be set.

Believe me, I'm all for the non-pussification of the league (and America, for that matter), but you can't tell me that hits like either of Harrison's or Merriweather's should not go punished. They hit dangerously. Not necessarily wrong, but dangerously.
