Really in the dumps right now. I can handle the losses but the catastrophic injuries these past two years really have me down.

Seriously questioning why I still watch and care. Seeing grown men crying and literally dying on the field knowing their season and maybe their careers are over. All so some broadcast network can charge more for a commercial of something I would never purchase.

The 90's teams had injuries but our core guys never missed huge chunks of time. I have no idea if injuries are more frequent now or more catastrophic. I know surgery and recovery is better than ever. Yet it still feels so hopeless. All the emotional investment we as a community invest only for it to be sprained, torn, or broken in seconds.

Losing Milano is a gut shot I'm not sure I can get over.

Dude, you were a lot more rational and measured with your responses when you lived in Portland. It's a long season. Enjoy the story.

    Based on?

Over 4 seasons played in 40 out of 66 possible games, started only 4, caught all of 64 balls for 793 yards, 8.9 avg and a whole 4 TDs?  That averages out to 10 games per season, 1 start, 1.6 catches and 19.8 per game and 1 TD a year?

McKenzie, who is 2" taller, over the same time frame played in 61 out of 66 possible games, started 25 of them, caught 119 balls for 1137 yards, 9.6 avg, 11 TDs.

He's a returner who plays some WR

He's been brought here to be a wide receiver. He's had 9 fumbles in less than 100 touches. Every one of them came as a returner. He's not going to be playing special teams unless it's an emergency.

Me too. Milano was the best player on defense last year and one of the only guys to show up against the Bengals. I really don’t think there’s any weakness in his game. Literally does it all.

I love Milano's game but he's not a good tackler. Joe Marino's podcast went through missed tackle rates for every defender and Milano's was atrocious - way worse than Edmunds. Although that problem may be endemic to our scheme.

  4. Link to Athletic article

    ---

The battery of tests they had patients perform then are similar to the ones the athletes take now, only they’re modified to record the differences between brains that are merely healthy and ones that work on another level.

Ally says the results are predictive.

He couldn’t give out Purdy’s exact score because it’s privileged information but said it was in the “mid 90s.” That’s about where Brees, the former Saints quarterback famous for lightning-fast decision-making, scored and where two of the top passers in the league now, the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and the Bills’ Josh Allen, also landed. The Bengals’ Joe Burrow took the test while at LSU and agreed to allow S2 to disclose the information.

Of course he did — he scored in the 97th percentile.

    ---

The article goes on to say that safety, cornerback and linebacker are the other positions where heightened awareness and response time are reflected in scores and correlate with success.

Recall the MNF game, the Bengals won the coin toss and took the ball. The MNF announcers made this a point that they usually defer but hey wanted to make a statement and score first.

Actually, no! The Bengals have preached aggressiveness and have taken the ball first since the early weeks of the season. They have supreme confidence in their offense h kinda like our offense of the last 2 late seasons (not this one obviously)

  6. Sorry if this was posted elsewhere but I thought, of all the brief write-ups I've read of the Bills game, this was the best. From football outsiders:

What Happened: The Bills took an early 17-0 lead, then indulged in their all-too-common urge for autoerotic asphyxiation. Three Josh Allen turnovers, a few not-quite-caught Allen bombs, and some missed tackles later, the Bills trailed 24-20 midway through the third quarter while Skylar Thompson and the Dolphins looked on in awkward astonishment.

A Kaiir Elam interception and Cole Beasley touchdown gave the Bills back the lead, but they weren't done choking themselves for jollies: coordinator Ken Dorsey broke out the Nothing But Hero Balls game plan to "protect" that lead, and the Dolphins pulled within a field goal on a Jeff Wilson touchdown run to cap a long drive.

That's when Mike McDaniel's hybrid edibles kicked in and he forgot what sport he coached. McDaniel began calling timeouts because he did not like the defensive formation as if he were Mike Krzyzewski. With no timeouts left when trailing by three, McDaniel took forever to get a fourth-and-1 call into the huddle, resulting in a delay-of-game penalty that led to a Bills defensive stop which (essentially) iced the game. https://www.footballoutsiders.com/walkthrough/2023/bills-vs-bills-bengals-survive-giants-leap-forward

So what ideas do you have for your disaster plan?

ACTIONS TO TAKE IN EVENT OF PLAYER DEATH DURING GAME:

    1) clear away blood and body parts to avoid creating a trip hazard.
    2) allow players a 5-minute break and then 5 minutes to warm up.
    3) allow team whose player died to designate a new captain, if the dead player was one.
    4) ???

I don't know Step 4. But Step 5 is definitely, Profit!

I'm not over playing it, I'm a Bengals fan brother. LOL. I'm sure you saw it differently, but I am not dumb, I know Josh and Diggs could have come back at any time.  I actually think we deserve the chance to bring you back to the Jungle....

Fair enough. I think a trip to the Super Bowl should be as fair as possible in this case. Given all the circumstances, I think the AFC championship game between any of the three teams in question should be at a neutral site.

And I'll be rooting for the Bengals if Buffalo doesn't make it. Your team is all class. Except maybe Hendrickson.

Again you didnt watch either game.  I have seen the Bills down but in total control of the game - the Bears game was way closer than it should have been going int other second half but there was never any doubt.  We had a dozen miscues vs the Pats and put ourself in a bad situation.  Bucs were tipping passes and runners were tripped by the white line monster in the 1st half but we never got the feeling oh no... until the very end of the Pats game.

I do feel for the Bengals (and agree they're getting the worst of it) but I think you are way over-playing what would have happened in the Bills game. I still think it was 50-50 because of Buffalo's propensity all season to play a crappy first quarter on defense.

I would still hope that if the two teams meet, we'd play in a neutral site. I'm hoping that's one of the options on the table.

  10. If Bills win, Bengals lose and Raiders beat Chiefs, Bills could just forfeit the game. We'd be top seed, Bengals 2 and Chiefs 3. Ravens might be upset about losing division but I don't think anyone else would be too angry.

Otherwise I think you have to play the game.

Does it?  If the Bengals and Bills end up with the same 12-4 record, do the Bengals get the #2 seed?  If so, you may be onto something.

Well then you'd have to either play the game or allow the teams to decide whether being the 2 or 3 seed is worth playing. I'd gather at that point the Bills would be ok  playing a potential 2/3  matchup in Cincy in 2 weeks for the actual playoff game. Rather than twice in 3 games with an abbreviated schedule.

  12. I really don't think there's a reasonable scenario to play this game in a timely fashion.

And with regard to the most fairness to the league, you really want teams playing to win next week.

    Here's my potential solution:

    1. Cancel this game.

    2. For fairness to all teams, if all of BUF, KC, CIN win next week, the solution might be to give KC the top seed but if KC and BUF as 1,2 meet for the championship game, they play at a neutral site like Indy with fans of both teams given an opportunity to buy half the tickets. Similarly, if BUF and CIN meet as 2 vs 3, they play at a neutral site. Should any team lose next week, we go strictly to winning percentage.

I think this gives all the outside teams a fair shot (reduces Bills/Bengals possibility to have top seed and removes Ravens possibility of winning division)

  14. I think it was one of the Cover 1 guys talking about 3-man rushes out of a blitz look that has consistently given Burrow trouble all season.

Usually it takes a defeat for the Bills to make an adjustment to their zone heavy schemes so I'm not sure we'll see much of it this go-round.

Conversely, Allen had been one of the worst QBs against the blitz this season ... I think like 30th out of 35 qualified passers. I do think the Bengals DC is great at finding a team's weakness. That's not against pressure, where he's been really good. That in itself is an odd stat.

I'm really curious how the two defenses adjust and play the opposing QBs in this game.

  15. We need to be rooting for the Ravens. Even if we lose against the Bengals, we could get #2 seed if they then lose to Ravens. Just sayin' ....

Playing 1 game on the road, I still like our chances but on the road against both Bengals and Chiefs would be a tough go.

It's time for the NFL to introduce new awards. I'm tired of seeing QBs get MVP. Let's split it up. The Oscars do it that way.

"The Most Valuable Player for QBs goes to...."

"The Most Valuable Player for RBs goes to....."

"The Most Valuable Player for WRs goes to...."

And so on. It's time for the MVP to be in categories. NFL and the fans all win in this.

I think they call that an All-Pro team.
