Absolutely not unless one of the Big 3 receivers somehow fell past 10 the Bills are at the phase where they need the picks to backfill what they lose in free agency and the more picks the merrier

This.  No way I’m trading a 1st to move up 10 spots for the 4th or 5th best WR in a deep WR class.  If it’s for one of the top 3, who all seem to be graded as studs, then I’d think about it.

I agree about safety.  As much as we all love Poyer and Hyde they were slowing down.

Agreed.  For some there’s always something to worry about.  A couple mid-30 year old safeties, one who signed for a 1 year $2m deal and the other who’d probably be lucky to get that doesn’t register high on the list.  Replacing Floyd’s production seems like more legitimate gripe but he seemed to really tail off at end of year after he blew the Denver game.  Even though Morse was getting up there in age, any time you re-shuffle an O-Line that was playing well is a concern and Morse did get scooped up right away for decent money.  Gonna have to just trust McBeane on that one.

Many people here are disregarding the value of a strong defense. The notion that having a generational talent at QB means you must give him the weapons to be successful is actually correct, but the Bills have all ready been a top rated offense the last few years. It's not like he doesn't all ready have a lot of weapons. Defense though, gets the opposing team off the field and gives that generational talent QB back on the field, giving him more opportunities to make plays. There is value in that. Also, if the defense is weak, your generational talent QB is fighting an uphill battle to score more points because the defense is giving up points at an accelerated rate. I want a Diggs replacement as much as anyone, but you cannot ignore the fact that the defense has lost a lot of talent. Far more than the offense has. The WR or bust crowd may just find out that they get there wish and still bust. All because the defense turns into a complete tire fire.

Not seeing how the defense lost a lot of talent.  It lost Floyd but not outrageous to think Von another year removed from ACL surgery can replace his production.  Can’t imagine Austin Johnson will be worse than Settle or Poona Ford.  Milano is back.  Poyer and Hyde are gone but Edwards is probably an upgrade.  The defense is most likely better this year.

To get this out of the way: this isn't me claiming that I have any special juice about what's going in the war room. It also isn't an absolute path. If a player who has been forecasted in the top 10-15 is there for the taking in the 20s, I am even for a (reasonable) trade up. If Jared Verse, Brian Thomas or Adonai Mitchell (make your pick of who you think WR4 in the draft is) or whoever you think is an instant game wrecker, you take them.

However, as is often the case, I am seeing a bit of a glut around pick 20 on most mocks and Big Boards where plays transition from Week 1 Gamechanger to Week 1 Effective Starter. The truth is, with Beane at work, I don't think that there are any massive glaring immediate needs on the roster: Curtis Samuel can play outside enough that it's not critically dire. Epenesa, Groot and Miller are (in theory) a recent starting DE rotation. They have plenty of depth at LB, have theoretical starters in the secondary, the O-line is mostly intact, RB room is pretty full, and TE doesn't need more reinforcement.

Basically, while I think there are several places where the Bills could upgrade, there is at least a theoretical veteran that a rookie would need to take the job from. However, a lot of those contracts are short term, set to expire by 2026 and the team is already over the cap for 2025. If we can't get a gamewrecker, would we say no to another 3rd or 4th round pick if Beane lets someone trade in from the back end?

This is kinda making the case for trading up more than back.  Beane has nicely re-tooled the roster depth.  Now we need difference makers and starters along the lines of the Kincaid and Torrence picks.  We have enough 4th, 5th, and 6th rounders to take a shot on some diamonds in the rough.  Trade up in 1st with one of our 4th’s for brst D-Lineman and WR then do same in 2nd round with our other 4th or a 3rd next year.

This was the trade that immediately came to mind.

The Falcons moved up from 27 to 6 to get Julio Jones.

We would probably need to move up from 28 to about 4-5.

Jones was a borderline Hall of Famer.  Was this trade worth it for the Falcons?

I’d say probably yes.  And with Josh as your QB, the answer would’ve been definitely yes.

  6. Josh Allen is our QB.  Stop rolling with the Harty’s, Sherfield’s, Mick Collins’s, and Shorter’s of the world as your 4th and 5th Wide outs.  A more talented guy who hasn’t gotten deal he wants in free agency will take a 1 year incentive laden deal to be WR 3 or 4 for a shot to play with Allen.  To heck with playing the comp pick game.  How’d that turn out this year? Beane did everything to protect that 3rd rounder and we’re stuck with Sherfield dropping passes in playoff games.

Why is that even necessary?  Why spend money on a retread WR when you can draft as good and possibly better player with your 28th pick in a deep WR draft for 1/3rd the price.  The goal this off-season is to get younger and cheaper, but at WR it's also a goal to upgrade the talent.  Adding an injury prone 600 yard receiver for $10 mill is a huge waste of resources, especially when that 2nd boundary position could be Josh's 6th most popular target behind Diggs, Kincaid, Shakir, Knox and Cook.  Sorry, I just don't see the need for big $ FA help at WR.

Let’s stop surrounding Josh with the Trent Sherfield’s, Deonte Hardy’s of the world.  30 year old Diggs, Shakir, and a rookie WR ain’t enough and if anybody gets injured, it will be criminal spending another year with Josh throwing the ball to Sherfield level dudes trying to beat Mahomes in the playoffs.   Brown and Samuel were both 1st round talents, are still in their primes, and have put up decent numbers with QB’s half as good as Josh.

Don't expect any major money invested here.  When guys like Mooney are getting $10+ a year, Beane is going to stay far far away.

No, but I think we are now in a position to go up to $10m on a 1 year deal for a marquise brown or curtis samuel if the market isn’t what they want.

With the signing of Morrow, the team breakdown now looks as follows (not including futures/reserve players

    Total current players =

Offense 17 of 23 players (roster allocation to the position from 2023 in (x)).

    QB (2) - current 2: Allen & Trubisky

    RB/FB (4) - current 2: Cook & Gilliam

TE (3) - current 3: Kincaid, Knox, Morris

    WR (5) - current 3: Diggs, Shakir, & Shorter

Oline (9) - current 7: Brown, Dawkins, McGovern, Torrence, Edwards, Anderson & Van Denmark (Doyle still in the mix)

    Defense 18 of 25 players

Dline (10) - Current 6 - Jones, Oliver, Rousseau, Miller, Jonathan, & Epenesa (Cline and Ankou also in the mix)

    LBs (5) - current 5 - Milano, Benard, Williams, Morrow, & Spector

    CB (6) - current 4 - Johnson, Douglas, Benford, & Elam

    S (4) - Current 3 - Rapp, Hamlin, & Lewis (CB)

Specialists 4 of 3 slots - Bass (PK), Ferguson (LS), Martin (P) & Haack (P) - one of Haack or Martin aren't going to make the team.

Looks like there are 13 jobs still available - 2 RB, 2 WR, 2 OL, 4 DL, 2 CB & 1 S.  My guess is 6-7 of these jobs will go to draft picks (WR, S, CB, OL, RB, 2DL?).  Still hopeful Ty Johnson returns at RB.

Beane has done a crazy amount of work the last 7 days getting the cap in order and filling a lot of roster spots.  Phase 1 was getting cap in order.  Phase 2 was re-building the roster depth.  Phase 3 now dipping tie into free agency and seeing if we can land a WR still available.  Same with safety and d-line.  Some intriguing options still out there.  Will also be interesting what Chargers do to get under the cap.  We are in way better shape than I thought we’d be in 7 days ago.
