I was watching this video on YouTube, the latest installment in the Lamar vs Josh debate.  It's a Ravens' fans channel and the two guys debate a 49ers fan who believes Allen is the better QB.  The actual debate starts at the 9 minute mark if you're interested.  It doesn't take very long for everyone's favorite Lamar excuse to come up, if only Lamar had Stefon Diggs...

How many times have you heard it in the media, if only Lamar had Diggs?  What these Ravens' fans and media pundits don't get is that you can just as easily say that without Josh Allen, Diggs is not an elite WR in 2020.  It's obvious that Allen and Diggs both benefited from having the other on the field, you just never hear people talk about how Allen lifted up Diggs, it's always the other way around.

Let's look at some Stefon Diggs' career stats.

    Average Catch Percentage

    5 seasons in Minn;    68.4%

    1 season in Buff;        76.5%

What can possibly explain this 8.1% jump in Diggs' catch percentage over his career average?  Did he suddenly develop better hands? Or could it be that Allen was putting the ball right where Diggs needed it to be?  I don't remember a lot of circus catches from Diggs last season.  Allen just made great throws that gave Diggs a chance to make the catch.  Diggs would make his break and the ball was there.  Seems like Diggs really benefitted from a lot of accurate passes last year.

    Receptions     NFL Rank

    2015;    52           #61

    2016;    84           #16

    2017;    64           #30

    2018;    102          #11

    2019;    63           #43

    2020:   127            #1

Diggs was not a perennial hundred reception receiver.   He broke 100 catches one season and never came close the other four.  His total of 127 receptions obliterates his best season in 2018.  Diggs must have had a QB who trusted him and fed him the ball constantly.  He had a QB who fed him the ball so much that Diggs finished first in receptions.  The competition wasn't even close, Diggs beat Davante Adams and DeAndre Hopkins by a dozen receptions each.

    Rec Yardage   NFL Rank

    2015;    720         #52

    2016;    903         #34

    2017;    849         #25

    2018;   1,021        #20

    2019;   1,131         #17

    2020;  1,535         #1

Same thing here.  Look at that jump with Allen throwing Diggs the ball.  He surpassed his best season in yardage by over 400 yards with Allen, and had finished no higher than 17th in receiving yards before playing with Josh Allen.

People also seem to forget that Beasley had a career year last year with Allen throwing him the ball.  After nine seasons in the League, Beasley set career highs in completions and receiving yards.  Maybe it was Diggs throwing Beasley the ball.

I've yet to hear one pundit say that Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley were the beneficiaries of the best quarterback play of their careers.  It's always the other way around, Diggs and Beasley made Allen.  It's a lazy opinion.  After a combined 15 years in the League, both Diggs and Beasley had career years in 2020.  Did Diggs and Beasley help Allen?  Absolutely.  But not as much as Josh Allen helped them.

The Orioles' existence already gives me reason to dislike Baltimore, and the Diggs excuse is so lame and lazy. Are we pretending that Mark Andrews and Hollywood Brown are absolute bottom of the league target options? Or is it, maybe, that Diggs would be completely wasted on the Ravens because Lamar can't throw for sh*t?

Allen is the far better quarterback. The only people arguing this point are Raven fans and people who still haven't filled out their Josh Allen apology form.

Well retiring is sort of like bankruptcy. You can say it, but saying doesn't mean anything, you have to actually file paperwork so Aaron Rodgers can say anything he wants out loud, until he files paperwork he's not retired.

Afaik there are no papers to file. The CBA doesn't cover "retirement". You just stop playing.

Precisely why it can’t be good to have the likes of him throwing shade.

It's kind of like Bernie Madoff chastising someone for skimming money. I didn't need OJ to tell me that Cole is doing himself and his team a disservice by not just shutting up.

What really bothers me is when Beasley airs stuff that could and should be private conversations, but weirdly makes them public for some reason. If he wants to talk, then talk I guess, but bringing teammates into the public conversation is not a wise move.

The world just sucks right now.

Except that there is no mandate, so he isn't fighting a mandate.  Beasley and other NFL players are allowed to CHOOSE whether or not to get the vaccine.

Then there are alternative rules to follow.

He is saying "I want choice 3: No vaccine, AND No rules".

Good luck with that, we all have rules to follow at work.

There is a large push at this very moment to mandate vaccines. It's always been creeping towards that end, so I'm definitely not gonna rule it out.

I love Beasley and prefer him on the team... but I also think our WR corps would still be very good without him if Diggs, Sanders and Davis were our top 3 WRs. Plus I think Allen is going to start becoming that QB who elevates another WR or 2 into surprise production territory.

Beasley can simultaneously be a great slot WR and too much of a headache to keep on a team with some good talent in the WR room... and I think that is the case.

I don't know how anyone can watch last season and say with a straight face that we'll be just fine without Beasley. We are a significantly worse offense without him. I like Davis as much as the next guy, but a big part of how he got open was because the other team had to worry about Diggs and Beasley, and broken coverage. Beasley was to third downs what Davante Adams was to goal line offense, automatic. He gets insane separation in 2-3 seconds and catches everything thrown his way. I understand people don't like...stuff...about him, but separate that from his football ability.

Baker’s ego seems to write checks his talent can’t cash.  It kinda fires me up how much he’s gushed over, since he’s never had less than a stellar arsenal of talent around him, yet hasn’t (in my mind at least) lived up to expectations.  He’s already being gushed over for the upcoming season, as well.  Josh has generational talent, to your point.  But that aside, his answer of “I don’t need to work on my craft” (I know, I generalized), really shows something about who he is.  Josh is just the total package.  So glad Beane ignored me when I screamed “Rosen”, at my TV.

A large part of this thread should be a cautionary tale to NEVER attach yourself to any college prospect. If the paid pundits hardly ever get it right, why do fans go apepoop whenever the guy they want is passed on? I've experienced it on two boards in two completely different sports and I'll never really understand it. Even something like the Leatherwood pick, the worst you could say is that the Raiders should have traded down, but you can never know for sure. If a guy is your guy, you take him when the chance is there. Fan insight into the players is extremely limited.

My analysis in 2018 was not on the mark.  It was something like this:

Allen - A most likely losing lottery ticket who can’t throw. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off

This wasn't off. You said he was a lottery ticket that was most likely to lose. This is correct, as it is with all raw prospects. Just happens that we hit the jackpot, a possibility you allowed in your assessment.

How is Beasley being persecuted?  He is putting his views out there on Twitter, others are putting their views out in response.

Abused, yes he is.  I do not and will not get a twitter account and participate because of the rudeness and abuse.  I think it's despicable.

Persecution simply means being ill treated or abused for political or religious beliefs, which is what's happening. Not everyone is doing it, but that's just what the word means.

FTR I wish he would just shut up because it's getting him nowhere.

So I don't think he deserves that treatment. What makes you think I would think that? Social media is a cesspit of vile behaviour it is why I choose to avoid it for the most part. He is entitled to his view on vaccines. I disagree with him but he is entitled to his view, people are entitled to disagree but where that becomes abusive he does not deserve that - nobody does.

On the false equivalence you can choose to give him the benefit of the doubt based on his past, I get that. But the words mean what the words mean. If that wasn't what he meant he should take the opportunity to clarify.

Fair enough, sorry for the assumption.

  10. 1 minute ago, GunnerBill said:

    I am sorry I disagree with #1 and #2.

On #1 - How is Beas being persecuted? He is not being told he must take the vaccine. There is an option negotiated by his union for him to not take it. He doesn't like that option either and wants an option that is not on the table. That is not persecution. Are some people coming at him on social media? Yea I expect so. That is social media. Stay off it would be my advice.

On #2 - if he didn't mean that it was very unfortunately worded. I'd like to believe he didn't but what he said rather suggests he did.

In my first point, I was not talking about the league. Obviously they are not saying "all you unvaccinated people can do what you want, except Cole Beasley". He is being persecuted by a portion of the public and blue check marks on twitter, who enjoy scoring free dopamine hits by dunking on Beasley with their witty one liners.

Like I said, you probably agree that he deserves to be facing this treatment. I merely asserted that it exists.

For the second point, I dunno what to tell you. Two people can read the same thing and come away with different conclusions that they find to be obvious. I'm just going to assume the guy who's been playing with lots of black guys his entire career, who has a black wife probably isn't comparing his situation with the historical injustices black people faced.

Eeek. I decided to go look this up because I though you must be overreaction but I have just seen that tweet at Jerry Hughes. Wow. And Jerry was not even tweeting at Beas he was tweeting at another guy. The insinuation was definitely - I am now a minority being persecuted in the same way as you have faced racism. Bad, bad look.

He is entitled to think whatever he likes on vaccines but his twitter rants have now gone a bit beyond just stating his view. I have to think someone from the Bills brass has tried to talk him down because this is not helpful.

    1. He is being persecuted, whether you agree that he should be or not.

    2. He was obviously not making a point about historical oppression.

    3. Some epidemiologist who is advising my provincial government is going on TV and promoting the idea that vaccinated people need to "stop sharing air" with the unvaccinated. Let's not act like this isn't an opinion that is out there.

Probably not a good way to frame your point given the state of the world, but racist? We've used this word so much that it has basically lost meaning.

  12. Ah, just what we needed. A Beasley poop flinging thread. These are always a boon to the board. Many people end up with changed minds, new perspectives and new friendships.

Since this is now going in the direction it was obviously destined to go in the first place, I wonder how long it will rumble on.

That’s racist. How can you compare being unvaccinated to what minorities face? So saying that Hughes doesn’t care about the minority now isn’t racist?

Regardless of whether anyone thinks it's racist or not, try looking up some history before declaring anything on effing Twitter is "as racist as it gets"

Well like I said I am not going to try to pull a Nostradamus or anything, but I can't say I disagree with your thoughts.  Honestly never even really thought about how old he actually is.  OK I googled it...only 69.....he could be around longer than ya think....hell BB is the same age.

Mike Tomlin is a REALLY good coach, though. He took that team last year into a 12-4 season with injuries on defense, a non existent run game, an immobile Big Ben who can't reliably throw the ball more than 5 yards and one of the highest, if not the highest, receiver drop rate in the league. The year prior he had a winning record with Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges. I think the only way Tomlin goes is if he wants to.

Pretty much near ditto for Sean Payton. I just don't see where you're gonna find a better pair just floating around or among the various offensive/defensive coordinators.

And FTR, on Pete Carroll, I don't think Belichick will be around much longer either.

No one. I said that BB exposed the “absence of progressive coaching”. Meaning he became an all time great partially due to a lack of creative coaching around the league. BB took chances other coaches wouldn’t. Game plans that sometimes involved throwing every down, and going for fourth down in situations where the odds were in his favor. Most NFL coaches don’t accept data that supports more risk taking at the proper time. Coaching is coming around to new ideas, but my point was in reference to head coaching turnover. This is a fickle league, but coaches don’t do themselves any favors. You’ve got guys like Doug Marrone punting on fourth and one with mediocre rosters that need to take chances to win.

Case in point, from point maximizing standpoint, most teams should be going for 2 almost every single time. I think that's going to be the next shoe to drop.

It's why Harbaugh is chronically underrated. In a division which is never easy - Pittsburgh's last losing season came before twitter was a thing - and with two Quarterbacks who have their strengths but nobody is confusing with being elite he has had 1 losing season (and they were completely injury ravaged that year) he has made the playoffs 9 times in 13 years, is 11-8 in the post season and has a ring. It is remarkable.

The one thing you would say is he has been supported by good ownership and a top 5 front office, but even allowing for that his record speaks for itself.

Is he underrated? He's always mentioned in every top coach conversation I've seen.

I would venture that maybe someone else other than Zimmer might be out after this season too.  Not going to pull a Nostradamus and try to say who but #2 or #3 might be the guy who might leave.

#'s 8 and 9 are gonna be around for a long time IMHO......kinda forgot they got hired within a day of each other.....Shanny might be out soon.....interesting list of ALLLLLLLLL those coaches hired in 2019, 20 and 21!!!

I disagree. I think #5 has the highest odds. I think the game may have passed him by a bit and if this unrest with Wilson continues, who knows. He could also just retire since he's super old.

Curious about the Bills footprint in it's market.  I am not from Buffalo, WNY, the Northeast etc...I don't know your area etc.

Denver would be a team with a large regional footprint where they have high numbers of fans in Wyoming, Montana, Utah, western Nebraska...that kind of thing.

Mostly I guess I am wondering if Ontario is consider "Bills Country" or not?  If it isn't why not?  How much of New York do you say is Bills fan territory?  What about Erie, PA is that where the Steeler or Browns butt up against Bills areas?  Just wondering.

    Ontario is not Bills country.

First off, SW Ontario is closer to Detroit. In the Windsor area, the local radio stations treat the Tigers/Lions/Red Wings/Pistons as the "home teams" of the area. Then, in case you don't know, Toronto sports fans are the biggest bandwagoners of any fanbase I've seen, and the only persistent enthusiasm is for the Maple Leaves. I'm not sure why Ontarians aren't Bills fans. I don't really meet very many of them. The other day, bumped into an Iggles fan, drove behind a truck with Steelers decals, work with a Dolphins fan and then due to the bandwagony nature of the people here, you'll find a lot of residual Patriot fans who are slowly converting into Bucs/Chief fans. Oh, and a bunch of Packer fans for some reason. Maybe they feel solidarity with the North or something.
