I hope it works out for you guys, but Devils fans were calling for his head long before last year ever happened.

Trust me, they won 52 games in spite of Lindy.

It's all in the past as the Devils have moved on.

    Good luck to you guys.

No team wins 52 games “in spite of(sic)” their coach.  That is just nonsense.

  2. So I guess people thought that Terry was going to live forever and the Government will waive inheritance taxes for the Bills owners.  This is the least surprising development this month with the Bills.  When you have an asset that triples in value in a relatively short term, turning some of that appreciation into cash is certainly not unusual, especially when you have a near term need for $600 m in cash or so in addition to some estate planning to do.  A minority owner at this point changes absolutely nothing with respect to the Bills long term prospects in WNY.  In fact, the finances of this deal may well increase the chances that the Pegulas can keep control in the family for the long term.  It seems that this is the intent.

I was not sure where else to post this but mods please merge if appropriate.

For those of you with Athletic access, Brugler’s 7 round mock draft posted today.  Linked above. If you are not familiar with him, he publishes  an excellent compendium and ranking of NFL draft prospects each year that can also be found on the Athletic. He has the Bills trading up with Jacksonville to 17 using their first this year, two fourths, and a second next year to take Brian Thomas.  He has us with Cole Bishop, Safety in the second, and Javon Baker, WR in the third.  This seems like an excellent result to me, but certainly interested in what the more knowledgeable draft gurus around here think.

I would be thrilled with Thomas in particular. Bishop seems more of a box safety but does have some cover skills as well.  Baker is a potential replacement to Gabe’s role on this team, but with more ability to get open in intermediate routes.  Good YAC ability as well.

People would like to drop out of Round 1, 13 total spots, to move up 2 spots in Round 2 and then get the 24th pick of the 3rd Round? That would put GB @ #28 and then the rest seen below before we pick. You still think we would get an impact WR at that point? I don't.

This does set them up perfectly for that rotational DL we have all been craving though.

Maybe I just watch the wrong sports media but I’m blown away by how this has played out.  Every single offseason the national media basically said that Diggs was a malcontent that was causing friction on his team and with his QB.  He’d throw out those famous cryptic tweets and every media outlet would take 30 minutes deciphering how unhappy he was.  His brother flat out trashed his QB and Josh did nothing.

Now Diggs is traded and Josh Allen fed up after 1 loss makes an offhand remark (mind you no one seems to know what Diggs said before that remark) and that’s the whole story now.  The Bills got robbed, Diggs is going to be part of one of the best offenses in the league, he’s suddenly a top 5 WR again.  But man Josh Allen yelled at him ONCE.

Just crazy how it all flipped.

Trashing Buffalo and the Bills is a national pastime.  This is nothing new.

Jason Whitlock claims it was because he wanted to go somewhere with great strip clubs and to be closer to his brother so they could hang out:

Jason Whitlock: “I’m going to go back to what I said a year ago... Stefon Diggs has wanted out. He went to Buffalo to pair up with Josh Allen and to win a Superbowl, and now this will be his 10th NFL season and he don't care about winning at this point. What I told y'all a year ago was he’s like ‘man, I'm up in here in Buffalo, I came out here to win Super Bowls, we're not going to win a Super Bowl, it's cold up in here, the strip clubs aren't as good, let me get to a city where the strip clubs are off the charts, and me and my brother can hang out...’ I speculated that he wanted to get to Dallas. Well, he couldn't get to Dallas, but...

It's been years since I've been to a strip club, but I used to be a strip club connoisseur. Houston as a ‘strip club capital -- it's got to be in the top five in the country. I'd put Miami, Vegas, Portland, Houston, and Atlanta -- those are the top five. I'm telling you; people swear by Houston strip clubs, Stefon Diggs is very happy. It's not about winning at this point, it's not about stats, he's made his money, he's gotten the big contracts, he's good. He'll want to put up some numbers, but he don't really care. He's not about that life, and this ain't about winning.

I know that Houston is all-in. they got DeMeco Ryan, the great young coach, they got the great young quarterback, Joe Mixon, they got Danielle Hunter, who had a tremendous season last year... Houston is in win-now mode. Stefon Diggs looks good on paper, but I actually think he'll end up being the problem and could throw a banana peel for the Houston Texans, who have made a lot of moves trying to win right now.

He got 160 targets last year in Buffalo and the least amount of targets he ever got in four seasons in Buffalo was 154, so they fed him the ball. I’m not dismissing what CJ Stroud did as a rookie, but we've seen quarterbacks have great ‘years’. Josh Allen has had a great 3,4, 5-year run, but Diggs has got to be careful what he wishes for here. He may regret abandoning Josh Allen. Not the city of Buffalo and that cold weather, but Josh Allen. Josh Allen is a better quarterback than CJ Stroud and he's more proven than CJ Stroud. This could be one of those ‘Oh, the grass is greener! They got Joe Mixon! They got Danielle Hunter! DeMeco Ryans is a hot new coach! CJ Stroud is the best young quarterback in the league, and Sean McDermott and Josh Allen don’t know what they’re doing!’ The grass isn’t always greener. CJ Stroud could take a step back, and Josh Allen is NOT going to take a step back.

Diggs put pressure on Josh Allen and he’s going to eventually do the same thing to CJ Stroud. Right now, it’s in the honeymoon phase, but these diva wide receivers, particularly with Black quarterbacks, they can get out of pocket in terms of how entitled they feel. Think about the way Terrell Owens treated Donovan McNabb. They’re putting a controversial, polarizing, and outspoken receiver paired with their hot young quarterback, and it could blow up in their face.

I’m saying this in all seriousness and circling back to what I said in the beginning of this. The strip club culture in Houston is going to be a problem. I’m not even trying to be funny. Stefon Diggs, his brother Trevon, they like the social life, they like to get out there and party, and have a good time. They like ‘304s’ and there’s a lot of 304’s in Houston. There are some women in Houston celebrating right now ‘HEY, WE FOUND SOMEONE TO REPLACE JAMES HARDEN HERE IN HOUSTON! I called it a year ago. The guy wanted out of Buffalo, he wanted to be in a city where he could party, and he just moved to Houston.”

The first explanation I have heard that actually makes sense.

What’s better - Aiyuk at $30m/year (reportedly what he wants) or A Mitchell on a rookie contract?  As I’ve been saying - Beane should find a way to land TWO of the top 5-6 rookie WRs from this class.

No contest.  The Bills should not be looking to trade assets plus significant committed cap for Aiyuk or any other established receiver.  There is a substantial opportunity this year to get younger and better and cheaper at that spot

Remember when Robert Foster had over 500 yards the final 8 games of the season, and everybody here was saying he was gonna be a 1/2? Kinda feels like that with all the hype Shakir is getting.

Shakir is a much more polished receiver than Foster ever was.  He was essentially a one trick pony.

I've always had the view that I like Diggs. I respect his grind to be great. I won't forget the way he sat out on the field after that KC game. It looked like a person who cared a lot. I respect his competative flare and appreciated goofy little things he did a few times.

The way it ended wasn't ideal. This isn't the outcome I would want. I trust in this regime, with the understanding that they have some flaws and I have no crystal ball. At least I know stuff gets shaken up and thats a sign of people not getting stuck on losing ideas.

So bring the pain and thin the weeds. Rebuild stronger and figure it out in this next few runs. If not then it was a good run but Ill have to side with the win it all now crowd.

I had a different take on his on field demonstration after the KC game.  I viewed it at the time as trying to draw attention to himself.  Gabe was the potential hero of that game let’s not forget, not Diggs.  That’s why he was demonstrating on the field.  Me, me me.

Yes you were an early adopter of that analogy. You saw what many others couldn’t, and some still can’t, likely because you work directly in architecture and understand what is normal and what is not. You were able to understand very quickly that what the Bills are doing is not normal.

I think you pose an excellent question of whether price or presentation is the problem. While a fool and their money are soon parted, I do believe it is a mixture of price and presentation and roll-out. The team created no hype, released very little in the way of renderings, require a timeshare style presentation, and THEN expect people to pay thousands of dollars on top of it.

    It was a poor plan.

I think it remains to be seen if it’s a poor plan. The stadium will not open for over two years. If I were going to bet, I would bet on the multi billionaire and the team he has assembled who have no doubt studied this to death and have done it before, not the opinion of a fan no matter how dispassionately considered. When that stadium opens all available PSLs will have been sold and I am sure Terry will be very pleased with the financial result.

The sports "Media" is already beginning their "analysis" that the Bills are done in 2024.  The Athletic (a NYT company) has an article today by the Jets beat writer about how the Jets have the most talented roster in the AFC East (their 80 year old QB not withstanding) and we all know how objective the NYT is.

    https://theathletic.com/5388899/2024/04/04/jets-best-afc-east-roster-diggs-trade/

How much are we really going to miss any of the players released, traded or not re-signed this off-season?

    Wide Receivers

Let's start with the elephant in the room.  The Bills moved on from both veteran boundary receivers including "superstar" Stefon Diggs.  Those two accounted for 2349 receiving yards last season and 15 TDs.  However, Davis caught only 56% of his targets and after week 6 Diggs caught only 61% of his opportunities.  In fact, Diggs, after week 6, was on pace to only put up 830 yards (on 145 targets) in a full season.  That would have put him 25 in NFL.  He also was clearly no longer a fit in a Joe Brady offense.

On the other hand Kincaid and Shakir flourished after week 6.  Kincaid was inactive in week 6, but over the next 13 weeks (including the playoffs) his usage increased and he paced for 860 yards over a 17 week season.  His usage in his second season should increase further with Diggs gone.  Shakir's game also changed after week 6.  In the first 6 weeks last season, Shakir averaged less than 1 target per game.  1 target!  After week six, Shakir was on pace for 845 yards (on only 68 targets).

I also researched how the average WR drafted from 20-40 over the last 5 years produced in his rookie season.  The average was about 660 yards.  There were some stars like Jefferson, Tee Higgins, and Jordan Addison and some duds, but for the most part most were solid to good.  I'm confident that Beane & Co will find someone in the draft to help the Bills stretch the field with their 1st pick, something we didn't have last season.

In addition we added proven slot receiver Curtis Samuel who should flourish in Brady's offense and we aren't going to miss the departed Harty or Sherfield at all.

    Defensive Line

Are we really going to miss Phillips, Lawson, Ford or Settle? No didn't think so.  That leaves Leonard Floyd.  No BS, we are going to miss him.  The hope here is that Miller can capture at least some of his old form (he did look better in the playoffs) and that he and Epenesa can be effective enough to allow Rousseau to go back to his natural position and make up for the loss of Floyd.  My hope is that they draft a edge rusher in the 2nd rd to help make up for the loss.

    Offensive line

Out with Bates and Morse.  Considering Bates played all of 35 snaps, I don't think he'll be missed.  Morse on the other hand has been the Bills center for the last 5 years and has done a very good job, but at 32 it is a reasonable question to ask how much he has left in the tank.  Beane solution is moving McGovern to center and creating a competition for the guard spot to returnee David Edwards (148 snaps last season - the most by a Bills backup OL) and presumably veteran La'el Collins. Collins has started 86 of 89 career games as a rt, but missed last season with injuries.

    Running back

Lat Murray, Hines and Harris are gone.  They won't be missed.  Cook became a star last season. Ty Johnson also returns and was very effective last season in limited reps.  The Bills will likely add another back at some point

    Safety

Out with Hyde and Poyer and in with Mike Edwards and Rapp becomes a starter.  This is a slight downgrade based on last year's grades, but it was time to move on from Hyde and Poyer.

    Corners and Linebackers

White and Dodson are the big name departures, but given White's injury history and the return to health of pro bower Matt Milano, the play of Taron Johnson, Douglas, Benard and Benford, I don't think we'll miss either player.

On paper the Bills are slightly downgraded.  We have fair questions at WR, OL, DL and safety.  However, I'm not worried about the wide receivers.  To me, removing DIggs and Davis has opened the opportunity for Allen to longer have to worry about Diggs getting targets.  He can now focus solely on who is open.  At safety, the declines in Poyer and Hyde were very noticeable and Rapp and Edwards should give us at least when the vets did.   I'm also not worried about the OL.  Torrence and Brown should continue to improve and McGovern proved he has a very capable interior lineman last season.  The only loss the really worries me is Floyd.

Despite the downgrades on paper, I can see the Bills actually improving next season.  I think the offense will be better and more consistent.  Besides Allen and Dawkins, the heart of the offense are all young players in Brown, Torrence, Shakir, Kincaid and Cook who should continue to improve.

On defense it's much the same story.  Oliver, Milano and T Johnson are the core, but they received a significant lift from improving kids Benford, Benard, and Rousseau.

The way the Athletic works is that they assign beat writers for specific teams that have broad enough interest.  The Bills have a very good beat writer assigned, Joe Buscaglia.  If you want a fair balanced overview of the Bills and their chances, and don't want to be triggered by opposing viewpoints, read his stuff.  It’s not political bias, it’s sports.

I was just thinking about that this morning.  His HOF candidacy will now turn on whatever he's able to do in Houston and/or wherever he goes after next year.  If he lasts another five years and doesn't win anything, he'll probably get in as a compiler after having to wait awhile.  He has had exactly one memorable positive playoff moment (and it wasn't in Buffalo).  Andre is seen as a compiler and had to wait a long time; he had seven Pro Bowls to Diggs' four and at one point he had more Super Bowl receptions than any other WR, plus he had that three-TD second-half performance in the Comeback.  Diggs gotta do some work if he wants to be seen on that level.

Diggs is not even close to being a hall of fame receiver.  if he had not quit on the Bills he might have been Wall of Fame material by the end, but that is as far as it goes.

Whaley built the team that broke the drought. Without Josh.

    Polian at least made Superbowls.

Is that you Doug?  Or perhaps we have found the secret identity of Tyler Dunne on this board.

  15. I am no expert and will defer to those who study this in detail, but Nabers looks like the real deal to me and looks to be a very good fit for the Bills.  I think if Beane pulled this off we would be forgetting about Diggs in no time.  This is a high price but solidifies that WR spot for the next 5 years and immediately makes the Bills offense more dangerous than they have been in at least the past year.  Worth the risk.

Yeah I’m not married to that, but I can visualize him plugging in that spot.

I think the combination of Samuel and Shakir and Kincaid can handle that spot.  That’s what happened during the Bills winning streak to finish the year.  The need remains size and speed on the other side.

I have to say that I was getting pretty tired of his act.  No problem as long as the performance is there, but I did not like his whole demeanor not to mention performance in those last eight games, and since.  Good decision by Beane to move on while it is still possible and to some advantage for the Bills by freeing up space next year.

I worry he’s repeating the same mistakes.

Beane was not the GM in Carolina so I am not sure what the comparison is.

Living in Connecticut, I have no idea how I am going to listen to sports talk radio for the next 5+ months talking about how great the Jets are going to be.  With baseball season a week away, the talk on WFAN this morning has been all Jets.  The Jets have won nothing, haven't made the playoffs, have a highly suspect front office and coaching staff - yet everyone talks about them being a real threat to win the Super Bowl.

Here's Boomer Esiason talking about how they've moved past the Bills.

Over confidence in the Jets is as predictable as death and taxes. They are an 8 win team at best.

A lot of people probably say the same about us. We have Josh Allen playing like an alien and cannot find him weapons in find ways to choke in the playoffs. Spend a ton of money on D and have a head coach that is supposed to be a D genius but chokes in the playoffs and cant stop anyone. Not to mention the weird and crazy ways we have lost games because of bad decisions.

I see your point but these are two completely different plains.  Saleh is a disaster of ia head coach.  Poor leader, port decision maker, and established choke artist.  He can coach some defense, but he has established zero credibility as a head coach.  The Bills and McD are on a completely different level.
