  1. As more of the free agent activity plays out this year, it seems like there are more accomplished players available that believe they will land some big money deals.  I'm hoping that some miss out on the limited available big money contracts and are forced to settle for one year deals with a good team.  I suspect Beane will have some viable, cheap targets.

  2. I don't see the Bills going WR in the first two rounds.  I believe they will take one in one of the first two rounds.  It will depend on who is available when they pick.  Many of us have forgotten that they signed Hamler to a futures contract.  He could already be the second guy that they need to add.  If an good edge guy falls in the range of 28, don't be surprised if they pick him.  Pass rushers are less available in this draft than d-tackles and other positions of need.

Just like Beane's previous years in Buffalo, his free agency moves tell us a lot about his approach in the draft.

  3. As teams continue to shed players to get under the cap, there may be some more decent options looking to land on a good team on a one year prove it deal.  Every year there are some surprise cuts.  In addition to the good options that have been discussed here, the K J Hamler signing may turn out to be an upgrade of the WR group, if for nothing more than better depth.  Injuries derailed his first two years.  If he can stay healthy, he could turn out to be more than a depth player at a cheap price.

I also believe Motor is going to be a free agent.  Some in this forum were disappointed when he left for Houston.  He wouldn't be my first choice but could be a decent consolation prize if the Bills miss out on other guys.

You'll also need to cover Shapiro's Deli on Meridian Street at lunch time.  It usually gets a big combine crowd for lunch.

  5. $255.4 million cap should reduce some of the pain at one bills drive.  It definitely changes the combination of options that Beane will need to use to get cap compliant.  For me, the Miller deal seems like the boat anchor dragging the entire ship down.  We've seen bad contract decisions force teams around the league to compound the damage by getting rid of important contributors on their teams or digging the cap hole deeper.  I'm hoping Beane can avoid this.

  6. As many others have commented before, Beane will probably have to go low cost for the backup QB.  We don't see much of the players at practice, so it's hard for me to really judge K. Allen running the Bills offense.  He also had limited game reps.  I just believe Beane can get a better low cost option.  I also think the influx of drafted QB's this year will push some starters into backup roles and send some current backups to free agency.  I think we may be surprised at the number of better options that may become available for the Bills.  It may take a while to sort out as potential  FA candidates search for the most lucrative options or the best chances to win a championship.  My hope is that a decent candidate panics and signs with the Bills on the cheap before the game of musical chairs runs out of landing spots.

  7. I'll start with these two guys being some of my favorite players but Poyer and Hyde should both hang it up.  For every good play they made this season, they made two or three bad plays (missed tackles, blown coverage, or just got beat).  They looked slow all year.  Unfortunately, the Bills didn't have better options on the roster but they need to fix that.  Father time has run its course.

  8. Getting away from the run in the second half was a huge mistake.  He put a lot of faith in Purdy and did not react when he demonstrated that he was not really up to the task.  Holding the ball too long and some really poor throws should have told Shanahan all he needed to know.

  9. I'm not sure that any of these guys are a must have.  A lot of them would be really good to get back as long as it can be done at good price.  Some bad teams with a lot of cap flexibility will overpay some of these players.  I'm sure the Bills have prioritized the free agents and will do what they can to keep the ones they want.

Every year free agents believe they are going to strike it rich, only to have to settle for a smaller contract or a one year prove it deal.  Some of the Bills' free agents will end up this way.  In any event, Beane has a big job ahead of him.

I disagree again. Kincaid was the “pass catcher” that Beane talked about in his end of season conference. Yes he’s a TE, but they were chasing 12 personnel for a while and Kincaid had arguably the best hands in the draft. He’s literally exactly what Beane talked about.  Also…he did take an interior olineman in the Second and talked all off-season that they thought the successor to edmunds was already in the roster. It was posters like you that didn’t agree with that so you conveniently ignored all those comments.

If you're going to be a troll, at least try to be good at it.

He doesn’t pick based on need?  Are you sure?  Rousseau, Elam, Kincaid…all three play a position that they clearly targeted in those respective drafts. I would argue that Beane usually 100% drafts based off need in the first round. I’m fact, I don’t really think he drafts BPA until day 3.

I said that he doesn't pick solely on need.  If he did, Kincaid would not have been selected.  He would have reached for a linebacker or a wide receiver or an interior o-lineman.  Tight end was not a pressing need.  Like most other teams, they look at the predraft grading (value of the players) and compare that to the value of the pick. If the value of the player and value of the pick lines up for multiple players, they probably select a position of need.

And you don’t think some really good safeties will be there on day 2?  Your way of thinking is why WR is our biggest need. Waiting is what got us in trouble. Every draft, there is a run in WRs at the beginning of the second round. So we should just boot the position altogether until the fourth again?  Nah. Hard pass on this idea.

It isn't my way of thinking,  It is what I expect Beane to do based on his previous drafts. It will come down to their needs and who is available when they pick.  They will likely have multiple positions of need and Beane has shown that he will not pick based solely on need.  Unfortunately, Beane has shown that he doesn't value receivers the same way that many of us do, certainly not enough to draft a second round talent in the first round.  If he did, we wouldn't be watching the receiving clown show that they have now.

As things relate to Dejean, he is a game changing talent.  I seriously doubt that he falls far enough to get to the Bills.

  13. He will probably be gone before the Bills draft but if he is there, I don't think they'll pass on him.  I think WR is their biggest need but I also think there are some really good WR prospects that will be available on day two.  Prior to the draft last year, I remember hearing that this draft will have about 80 guys with round 1 or 2 grades.  If that proves to be true, the Bills should be able to get two or three impact players.  Given that Beane pulled Kincaid and Torrence out of a poor draft class, I am optimistic.  Until we know what happens in free agency, it's really hard to project the Bills' draft.

  14. I was really wrong about the potential impact of Torrence and McGovern on the performance of the o-line.  They are much better than I expected.  I also had low expectations for Oliver and he has proven me to be very wrong.  I also had no confidence that Beane could do anything mid-season to plug holes if the need were to arise.  Moves to get Douglas, Joseph, and Ty Johnson were key late additions that are low cost and really helped the team, making me wrong again.

  15. For 4 strong to really work, it is important which receiver remains on the weak side of the formation.  It is most effective when it is a guy that can beat one on one coverage and/or requires double coverage.  For the Bills, Diggs should be the weak side guy.  He wins often against single coverage and if he draws double coverage, someone on the strong side should be open easily.  Davis on the weak side is not as effective.

They’re probably gonna throw a lot of different looks at Kelce

Teams that do a good job on Kelce often play him with coverage that is leveraged to force his option routes to the middle of the field, where a second defender collapses coverage on him from the inside.  Unfortunately, this leaves the defense vulnerable to slant patterns coming from the side opposite Kelce.  Tyreek Hill racked up a ton of YAC against this coverage.  Lucky for everyone, Hill is no longer there.

He wasn’t clearly downfield when the ball was thrown. It was a very close call. And since it had absolutely no bearing on the play I’m fine with the no call. Calling that play back because the OL was a foot too far downfield would have been exactly the kind of nonsense I hate from the officials.

I bet the linebackers and safeties that make a read on the o-linemen would disagree with you.  When they read a lineman move down field they react for a run.  The purpose for the rule is to prevent  unfair deception, to prevent the o-line from creating extra traffic for defenders to navigate, and to not give the o-line the advantage to create blocks quickly down field.  It really is a big deal.

In terms of the play itself, I was more upset about the two significant uncalled holding penalties.

Just checked the Fins injury report. It says it's a hip injury. Also, Jalen Ramsay is back at practice, albeit limited. https://www.miamidolphins.com/team/injury-report/

Watching Ramsey last season convinced me that he is greatly diminished.  Still has good straight line speed but no longer has the lateral movement that made him a great player.  He's not worth his cost any more.
