Trade down, Beane, if you know what you're doing

This is unpopular, but I think Bills need to go BPA if an elite talent drops. We need more stars on this team. I think the best thing would be a trade up in the 2nd round for a WR since this draft is so deep. I don’t see much difference in the 2nd tier guys and I think one can be had in that area of the draft.

Well. I think the difference is that Dejean is listed as a CB in college (not every year but in 2023 he was) and we’re talking about him moving around and being a tweener at multiple positions in the NFL. Where as Urlacher was the tweener in college and he played generally LB in the nfl (other than his first season).

my point is this, in the first round you should be getting a guy that you think is going to be a solid starter at a specific position of need in your team. Not a Swiss Army knife that isn’t great at anything but able to do 3-4 different positions. To me, this kid looks like a go between of a safety and a CB, and will excel at special teams. I don’t see him as much more than a role player. Which is fine, but not worthy of a wasted #1 pick.

And for the record, bringing up a guy like Urlacher being drafted 24 years ago would be like anyone bringing up Len Dawson being one of the best ever. Completely different times. The game has changed. Not even in the same argument.

Urlacher would absolutely dominate in today’s NFL probably more so than he did during his reign in the mid 2000s. He fits the mould perfectly at what a MLB should be in this day and age. A great ball player is a great ball player. DJ has some of the best instincts I’ve seen from this draft class and the only reason he’s getting pidgeon-holed is because of his race. Lots of players change positions coming into the NFL, but I still believe this guy could be a legit corner. Aaron Donald can play every position on the D-line…same with Zack Martin on the offensive side so technically they are Swiss Army knives as well. Doesn’t make them any less dominant.

I agree that o don’t see what makes him look so special to other people. To me he doesn’t jump off the page. I definitely wouldn’t take him in rd1. I could see a late 2nd or after for him as I think he’s a good athlete and can play multiple positions. But in the 1st rd I’m looking for a positional stud, someone that is dominant at their position. Not a guy that played one position In college but projects to something else in the pros.

    Brian Urlacher says hello 👋

Will watch it again. Really great analysis. He liked the shot to Shakir vs going to Diggs on the highly debated 2nd down play. Called out a potential bad read by multiple players on the 1st down run play. I didn't realize how much real estate Allen likely had if that is a read option and he pulls the ball out. He might have scored. Also discussed the 3rd down, Shakir was open on the left side for what likely is a first down. Allen didn't look that way. He was drooling over Josh's playmaking ability. Riding Diggs hard. Called him out several times for lack of effort and finishing routes. You see it. Lazy routes, rounded, not at the distances needed.

Josh is one of the most insane playmakers in NFL history and his out of structure game is at a level few players have ever seen. Something to be said for boring, repeatable, drop back and throws. Brady was the king of this. Structured stuff is what Josh needs to keep improving on. I think Brady had him going in the right direction with that last year. Seems to do much better when we try and establish the run and work in the shorter designed passes as we did vs KC.

    Really worth the watch.

Insane that people think Josh is going to have some sort of “regression” bc of the Diggs trade, I personally think he is going to post career numbers as long as the WR we are going to draft in the 1st round is able to make solid contribution. It’s going to be an equal opportunity offense this time much like those Brady-Lee teams. Diggs dogs it every time he’s not the focal point of the play. What I loved about Gabe despite the hate was that he was a vicious blocker. That dropped bomb was enough for me to see the writing was in the wall. It just blows me away that he has the audacity to complain after that massive blunder.

    Belichick is a control freak......

easy for an owner to reluctantly put up with his arrogance when he is winning as evidenced by N.E. making it to the AFC Championship game 13 times from 2001-2018.

as soon as the winning stops....out the door......then kraft happily sabotaging his future

McClappity isn't on that level and likely never will be

Nah. Bellichick definitely had no business coaching those last few years, but got a pass due to his past titles.

What is this "harassment" you have suffered?

If it's on Reddit or Youtube, it should be findable.

I’m not going to individually screen shot each comment. It’s just an observation I made over the past month frequenting other NFL social media. Most people seem to agree w/ me otherwise this thread wouldn’t have hit 12 pages.

Oh, I don't know, do you think, as @NoHuddleKelly12 said elsewhere, "the Order of Little Sisters of the Poor showed up to start at Linebacker for the Bills against KC in the playoffs" might have some impact on the results?  I don't think AJ Klein, Tyrel Dodson (with one wing), and Dane Jackson, not to mention injured Rasul Douglas, exactly scared KC's offense.

We'll never quite be able to do the experiment, but it's a fact that KC had the #6 offense in the league on points, #5 on yards, Tyreek Hill (1083 yds), Travis Kelce (1038 yds), and Kareem Hunt (1327 rush yards) in 2017 while Pat Mahomes was sitting on the bench to "watch and learn" how Alex Smith prepared and played each week.  And the same supporting cast was there for his rookie year.

Chiefs could only put up 17 on Baltimore who had a relatively healthy defense. Bill Parcells couldn’t scheme an effective defense w/ the pieces that were missing/injured that game.

90% of josh allen criticism is because of one reason, bills mafia.

Nick Wright legitimately has made a career on hating josh allen. Why? Because he's a beloved qb of a diehard fan base. A fan base that can easily be triggered into a frenzy of tweets and views. Every time nick Wright bashes josh allen he's immediately trending on Twitter.

You really think Stephen a Smith hates the cowboys? Guarantee he doesn't give a rats ass, but it's the most popular team in America and hating on them gets views and tweets.

They can't bash on Desmond ridder every day, no one will tweet or watch the clips.

Yes, but a lot more in recent times is coming from other fans. People keep harassing me for links when it’s stuff I’ve seen on Reddit, FB/Youtube comments, etc.

OK, now if you want to find criticism of Josh Allen, Florio of PFT just rips his leadership to shreds.  This seems like as good a place as any to put this.

My jaw dropped.  Wait, wait, hear me out here.

    Prior context, About 9:30 in:

Simms: "Everything I know from some people in the league there ....this was a mutual parting of ways.  That much I do kinda know.  Both sides were done with each other.  Now, to your point......Buffalo is obviously so annoyed and couldn't deal with it any more, that they were willing to give away a #1 receiver for next year's 2025 2nd round pick and take a $31M cap charge?  That needs to be in blinking lights.  That tells you how sick they were of Stefon Diggs. [Simms goes on about this for a while.  Note that Joe Buscaglia, who is very in to cold hard facts of cap and trade value, thinks the Bills got a fair or even a good deal for an almost-31 yr old WR]
Florio: "Well, it's their (the Bills) own fault, it's their own fault.  They knew what they were getting.  They knew they were getting a guy, who if you don't handle him a certain way he's not going to be happy.  And he has a way of pressing YOUR buttons, until you get to a point of 'FINE, let's move ON! And at the end of the day, he got what he wanted."

Simms: "I don't know how you can say it's their fault though.  I don't know how you can say that."

Florio: "Because they knew what they were getting, they knew that they were getting a guy who potentially was going to Wear Them Out."

Simms: "I don't know how you can say that.  By all due accounts, the Bills did everything they could, Josh Allen, the team itself, to make it work for Stefon Diggs.  Nobody has had the ball thrown to them more in the last 4 seasons, than Stefon Diggs.  I mean, they made him the guy, just feed him everything, all the time.  Yeah, you know what you're getting into there, and hopefully Houston lucks out and gets a different Stefon Diggs who realizes 'wait, I'm not a top-5 or top 10 talent any more, I am getting up there in age a little bit, and if I keep having these antics, nobody's gonna want me any more.  I would hope that helps him and his approach to things."

[Yes and no, Simms.  Stefon Diggs is in no way not acknowledging he's not a top-5 or 10 talent any more.  And he was a great teammate his first 2 years in Buffalo, so sure, he'll be good in Houston for a single year.  Count on it.]

Florio at 12:30 in: "Antics is the key word.  You're acknowledging there are things about Stefon Diggs that need to change.  So, what a team can do is either come up with a plan for changing him and implement it effectively, or get to a point where they say 'we can't take him any more'.  So the Bills, knowing or should have known, they're getting a guy you have to tread a little lightly with, and it's going to get difficult.  What is our plan for when it gets difficult?  What is our plan to coax him to mature into something else than what he's been? Where he WILL rush out of the locker room without talking to reporters?  Where he WILL gesture in the face of Josh Allen on the sideline during a 27-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals"

Simms: "Those are the things where I'm gonna blame Stefon Diggs a little bit there.  I mean, just looking at it from outside, the year was great, all of a sudden he's mad in a playoff game because he didn't get the ball enough [Fact: 4 receptions on 10 targets, led the Bills in targets by a lot] and then the offseason became a disaster...I don't know the details or the fighting or the conversations that went on there and I'm not trying to act like I do"

Florio: "Hang on.  We've talked about this before.  You know what Josh Allen needs to do in that moment [when Diggs is yelling at him on the sideline]?  He needs to throw off his vest, he needs to stand up, he needs to grab Stefon Diggs, and they need to go have a conversation, and he needs to tell Stefon Diggs what's what.  [yells over Simms, tells anecdote about Warren Moon going to Cris Carter, "you pull that ***** again and I'm never going to throw you the ball again as long as I'm the quarterback of this team, do you got it?"]  I love Josh Allen, you love Josh Allen, you call him 'Boy Blue'.  Sometimes I think he goes through life as an overgrown boy and doesn't really embrace what it means to be the Quarterback of the Team and I think that's what a lot of this is, Chris; I think this is Josh Allen being positioned, as he enters the back half of his prime, he's still in his prime, I think this is the Bills recognizing they have to put guys around Josh Allen that he's COMFORTABLE leading.  Because I think he's a big part of this.  And maybe nobody could properly get through to Stefon Diggs.  But I think that relationship was too much of Diggs doing whatever he wanted, saying whatever he wanted, and Josh Allen never calling him on it.  Not knowing how to do it.  Not wanting to do it. 'Cuz it's awkward.  A lot of people don't like confrontation.
Simms: "No, and this is a guy that likes it [I think he means, Diggs likes confrontation] and if he [Allen] did that on the sideline, he [Diggs] would blow it up and make it worse and it would be a bigger spectacle.  And I think Josh Allen is smart enough to say 'you know what, if I go do what Mike Florio says right now, everyone's going to go crazy on this subject, and people are going to be saying Josh Allen can't handle his team and all that, Josh Allen is losing his cool at the end of a playoff game, hey, you can't lead your team.  That's just TALK, MIke, that's not really the reality of that way."

Florio: "Chris, Chris, Chris.  You can get him in the locker room and do it there"

Simms: " You don't know that he hasn't.  You don't know that"

Florio:  "I guarantee you he hasn't.  I guarantee you.  I guarantee you that never happened."

    Simms: "Come On, Mike" (disgusted)

Florio: "We've never seen any hint.  We've never seen Josh Allen talk about it.  Josh Allen always has his back.  There's never been a hint of any effort, or any frustration, or any attempt by Josh Allen to take over that relationship.  That relationship was dominated by Stefon Diggs.  As long as Diggs got what he wanted eveyrthing was fine, and Josh Allen never pushed back against that disrespect that we've seen from time to time"

    Simms: "You're ...you're"

Florio: "I'm making inferences based upon what we've seen"

Simms: "I know, and I'm just telling you, nobody ought to call out a player at a post game press conference" (said while Florio is talking over him and won't let him get a word in edgewise)  If he did that, you'd say he's a Bad Leader.  You're putting him in a no-win situation.  Who comes into a press conference and says that stuff?"

    Florio: "Aaron Rodgers says it."
Simms: "When? As a team thing?  He never calls someone out..he says cryptically coded stuff. That's not a cool way to do it either, and YOU AGREE WITH THAT.  And that's why he's out of Green Bay, 'cuz everybody was sick of it.  Stop.  Stop!"

Florio: "Ok, you talk.  I won't talk until the break.  You take it over."

    Simms: "Be a baby"

Florio: "I'm not being a baby"

Simms: "You are being a ***** baby"

    Florio: "Let me talk"

Simms: "You talked a LOT.  Get out of here.  Shut up, ya baby."

Florio: "OK. See, this is what Josh Allen should do.  (Laughs)  I feel like, at the heart of this, there was a failure to manage Stefon Diggs."

    Simms: "Sure."

Florio: "Whether it was  Josh Allen not managing it the way Tom Brady would have, the way Peyton Manning would have..."

Simms: "Tom Brady couldn't handle Antonio Brown...couldn't handle it"

Florio: "Well...well...he wasn't there long enough

Simms: "WHAT?  They were living together!  They were living together!  I mean, *****, Holy Crap!  It's just not always fixable with these guys."

So if y'all want an example of the craziness of Media Criticism, There You Go.

Here we have Mike Florio, who has never been in an NFL locker room as a player, led an NFL huddle, or appeared in a post-game press conference - I don't even think he spends much time interacting with players or visiting locker rooms as a member of the press - criticizing Josh Allen for being an 'overgrown boy who doesn't really embrace what it means to be the Quarterback of his team' (essentially, for not leading), for not calling Diggs out in front of the public on the sideline, for not calling him out in a press conference, for not privately in the locker room reining him in.

And we have Chris Simms, who started 16 games for 2 different teams, played for 3 teams, and has actually done all of those things as well as been a coaching assistant on a 4th team, who has to basically talk over Florio because Florio won't let him get a word in edgewise to point out that the things Florio suggests would have major pitfalls and that Florio really doesn't know what Josh has or hasn't done behind closed doors.

My jaw dropped and I'm shaking my head at how BLATANTLY SILLY this was.  Yeah, Simms wasn't a great QB, but he understands actual locker room and player to player dynamics, he's been there.  He understands the unwritten rules about what QB can or can't do.  It was nuts.

Simms is right. Nobody knows what went on in the locker room. Josh could’ve pressed Diggs multiple times. He’s just smart enough not to throw him under the bus in front of the media. I think we as fans want somebody to put Diggs in his place in front of the cameras, that WOULD be satisfying, but what would it accomplish besides giving the media even more to ***** about? A 2nd rounder next year is a GOOD deal. We eat the money this year then we are home free. As much as I hate drafting somebody based on “character” I hope they grab a WR who’s not a cry baby.

Totally understand that, and I really like Kincaid.  But there is a very very small chance Shakir or shorter get to #1 receiver level

New England dominated for years w/ a cast of sure-handed “good, but not great” receivers. The most important thing is they run the correct routes, don’t drop the ball, and know how to improvise on the fly. If the offensive line can continue to hold up then I think Allen will be fine. I think we will see a much more Tight End-centric offense this season as well w/ Kincaid split out and Knox lined up traditionally. There’s talent, but it needs to be utilized correctly.

    Nice sleight of hand though.

This is stuff I’ve observed since the end of the season. You really expect me to dig up articles or comments some from months ago? What is my motivation for lying? The Josh Allen criticism is at an all time high. And the Roethlisberger comparison has been regurgitated about 1000 times.

I understand what you are trying to say, but every Super Bowl winning team in the last 5 years HAS had a top 10 receiving threat in that season (Kelce, Kupp, Kelce, Evans, Hill)

and, no team that has made the Super Bowl in the last 5 seasons has had a little surrounding talent then what the bills have right now without Diggs.

the situation is clear.  WR room is lacking talent on this team, and there are 3 high end potential top end #1 WR prospects in this draft.

in addition, the concern of not being able to field a strong roster if we mortgage picks to move up is in my opinion a controllable risk.  One of Beane’s best abilities is to utilize several avenues to field NFL capable talent across the field.  One of his big criticisms? Bringing in superstar talent.

does Beane moving up for a top end WR guarantee any success?  No, of course not.  But if he does move up does it give us more autonomy in selecting the right WR to potentially put us to the promise land?  Yes it does.

we will have to see what happens on draft day

No one really knows the talent we have since Kincaid and Shakir are so young. You can throw Shorter in there as well. Any of these players can turn into a stud.

This is what I have been saying.  The last 20 years, only one SB team had a WR1 taken in the top 15 picks.  There has never been any team in NFL history to make a huge investment to acquire a WR via trading for a proven one or trading up to draft one and win a SB.  There isn't even a team who signed an expensive one in FA that won a SB.

Making a large investment in a WR via draft picks or free agency spending has a 0% success rate...aka 100% fail rate...in taking a team and getting them over the hump to win a Super Bowl.

Look at what Miami paid for Tyreek Hill who has been arguably the best WR in the NFL (him or Jefferson) the past 2 years and Miami can't even win their division with a 4 game lead late in the season and has 0 playoff wins.  Or look at Raiders an Davante Adams.  Even NE when they had Moss actually LOST in the Super Bowl, although they didn't invest a lot to get him.

Now go look at the top 5 WR's in the NFL...more often than not, they are not on teams in the Super Bowl, let alone winning it.

This board has had an unhealthy obsession with WR as if not having the best WR's is the reason we lose.  We lost in 2020 because we were the worst team on the field in that game.  We lost in 2021 because of our defense.  We lost in 2022 because we got dominated in the trenches and couldn't run the ball in bad elements.  We lost in 2023 because we had no Linebackers and KC abused that mismatch and we couldn't even get Mahomes dirty.

We have never been eliminated because we didn't have enough weapons.  Our stable of weapons the last 4 years is better than a lot of Super Bowl winning teams offensive stables.  We had a top 5, arguably top 3, WR for the past 4 seasons and we have lost in the 2nd round 3 straight seasons.

I mean, I want a WR early in this draft too, we all do.  But this notion we must mortgage the farm to go get one has 0 examples of ever working and weakens a cap strapped team from building the overall roster.  I mean next year, we have a first and 2 seconds to keep adding more ammo to this team, and people want to give it away like sticks of gum.  Not to mention, this is maybe the best WR draft in history, even less need to make a major move.

I agree. I really hope Buffalo stays put in the draft and let someone fall to them. This draft is absolutely loaded at that position. I don’t mind a slight trade up, but not at the expense of any high future draft picks.

The all pro best LB on the roster, whos replacement was already drafted.  Would it be crazy for them to trade him now on an attempt to move up? Possibly.

But he has had some availability issues over the years. And the negative is him coming off a knee injury, but otherwise this would be a perfect sell high moment.

If a team was willing, it would be perhaps the best way to move up without sacrificing a boatload of future picks

    Discuss

Yes, let’s get rid of one of the few legit super stars on this team in their prime. No thanks. Look no further than the Kansas City game to see how much they missed his presence. Bernard/Milano are a top 3 LB tandem and probably the best in the NFL when it comes to pass coverage. Definitely one of the biggest bright spots for the team this coming season. McDermott has to be excited drawing up plays for those 2.

  17. You can’t deny the dudes talent. He is definitely in the conversation of GOAT running back and would’ve dominated in any era. OJs 2k season was not just his own accomplishment, but also pure dominance by the offensive line.
