Wow what else can you tell us? We need pass rush. It’s a weak draft for pass rush. There’s nobody else out there. People will groan about everything on here. 1 year 7.5 mil is not even a bad deal

The bus passed last week on Edge rushers we missed it. Instead we decided to double down on a 34yr old Addison and a back up DT in Butler . Awful decisions that will keep us from getting to the Superbowl.

I’m usually not a Negative Nancy but today let me be that guy.

The AFCE will be harder this year.  The Pats, Phins, and Jets all got better while the Bills got worse.

Pats.  They didn’t resolve the signal caller issue but Bill’s epic spending spree improved the rest of the roster.

Phins.  Tua – who Fitz seems to love – should be better his sophomore year.   To help, they went out and got Will Fuller.

Jets.  While they picked up a couple nice free agents defensive linemen, the best thing the Jets did this offseason was change out their entire coaching staff.

The Bills were an interesting team last year.  Despite the 13-3 record and AFC Championship game appearance, our guys only excelled in two areas: special teams and passing the ball.   Unfortunately, our ST unit lost its two best players: Roberts & Bojorquez.

While there were moments of excellence, no level of our D was consistently good.  And our offensive running attack was putrid.  None of those shortcomings have been addressed so far.

Beane did a nice job retaining our offensive linemen.  Sadly, though, they’re just not that good.  They don’t open holes in the running game.  And Daboll has to use TEs and RBs to help with pass pro.  Even with that help, we couldn’t protect Josh in KC.

While the rest of the AFCE stepped up, we stood still at best and probably stepped back.

Fingers crossed –free agency isn’t over and we still have the draft.

Jets- Can be a prb in a couple yrs . Salah will have these guys playing hard and they got some nice pieces to build with moving forward . If they take Wilson they can be a serious contender in near future.

Dolphins- All depends on how they develop Tua and if they hit on these pks they got this yr.

Pat's- Can't rule out Belicheck but I can't respect them until they get a QB. But if they do there gonna be very hard to beat.

All in all this division will be tough to win by 2022 but until then the Bills should win the East easily.  Now the AFC that's a different story unless we get massive growth from some of our young players mainly Oliver, Edmunds, Epenesa , Knox & Ford plus we find us a back in the draft . I don't see us winning the Conference without these guys really stepping up .

I was thinking about this a lot lately and I have come to this conclusion. When Beane signed Butler and Jefferson for the D-line last year he did that counting on Lotulelei (6'2" 315) to play all year. So I give him a pass on how poor our pass rush was last year. Star being out not only effected our pass rush IMO but it also didn't help in the development of Oliver either. I think with Star coming back this season it will free up some more guys to rush the passer because he commands a double team most of the time and last year noone on our line commanded one. So I think you will see some improvements next year with the guys we have....also not saying we wont draft an edge rusher or another D tackle to help either. In fact now would be a good time to draft another one to mirror Star as he gets older and I don't think he will be around much longer.  Here are some of my picks...

    Marvin Wilson FSU 6'3 319

    Tyler Shelvin LSU 6'3" 346

Bobby Brown III TAM 6'3" 325

    Naquan Jones MSU 6'4" 338

All guys that played the 1-tech in college and all can play stuff the run. All should be available in the second round or later (might have to move up to get a couple in the second). I just think we need to start looking for backups to learn from the guys getting older. It is ok for guys to sit a year or get the left over snaps. Thoughts...

Star is a nice run stuffing 1tech but he has nothing to do with the pass rush . He plays 35-40% of the plays and is hardly ever on the field on passing downs. This is what overblown in my opinion.  In 2019 the Bills had 44sks in 2020 39 not much of a difference . If anything the loss of JP hurt us more when it came to the pass rush.

Many of us are happy with Beane, but there are still those who find something to complain about or dangle it as a reason he "sucks" or "should be fired". Norman, Jefferson, and Murphy are all gone. Addison and Butler restructured their deals. None of that can "bite us" now. The cap situation sucked this year due to Covid. We kept our own and added a couple of pieces, one an upgrade at WR. In doing so we have at least kept continuity while other teams have made many changes, teams considered to be in the upper echelon of the AFC. We were just in the AFC Championship game. It's not really that dire. NE went on a spending spree, but they still don't have a QB and spending $$$ on high priced FA's is rarely a recipe for success. The draft is still to come as well.

I don't think everyone that complains wants Beane fired that's ridiculous. Beane has done a fabulous job in signing low budget free agents and he does his best work in the later rds of the draft. He hasn't really hit hard at the very top of the draft other then delivering us our franchise QB but he hasn't really wiffed either Edmunds, Oliver, Ford are all competent players and not complete busts . Could he be perfect ? No GM is perfect .

Beane has also helped build the culture we got here in Buffalo and that's very hard to do while trying to put together a really good football team. I guess the only question is now can he and Mcd take us over the top? We'll find out.

Matakevich played 343 special teams snaps, according to Pro Football Reference, and that was 76% of our special teams snaps. Doing the math shows gets us 451.315 special teams snaps, either 451 or 452.

The defense had either 1070 or 1071 snaps, and the offense 1086 or 1087.

So the STs had about 42% of the number of snaps that the offense had. And took up about 5% of the cap. This isn't a problem.

The Matakevich play where they hit an onside kick during the middle of the game, and Matakevich was our only player not caught flat-footed, and he made the play was a beautiful example of why you need guys like this. It didn't show up in the stats, one kick return for zero yards, but it was crucial in that Pats game.

That's over 20 snaps a gm that number seems a little high.

I like Toney. Keep in mind Sanders will be 35 in 2022. Beasley will be 33. We could draft a first round prospect this year, slowly work him into the offense and perhaps by the 2022 season he'll be ready to become a focal point of the offense.

I would play Toney sparingly this year. He'd probably be our return specialist and run all the same plays McKenzie did. I think it is highly unlikely both Sanders and Beasley are still on the team in 2022. Likely just one is and possible that neither are. So 2022 would be the season where Toney gets an expanded role in the offense with a year of experience under his belt.

I'd pass on Toney players of his skill set & size hardly ever pan out in the NFL.

With Ingram it would depend on his knee.  Seems like he was hobbled last season and only played in 7 games.  If his knee is shot then he’s not playing for anyone.  If healthy he could be a good bridge for a season to a youngster.  I’d wager that he won’t be signing with anyone until teams can get a good look at that knee though.  Medicals are  probably the hold up with Clowney finding a team too.

Yea I heard Clowney is still not cleared yet from his injuries same could be for Ingram.

  8. 38 minutes ago, BarleyNY said:

Most likely.  But you never know.  If we could bring in someone like a Melvin Ingram on a reasonable, short term deal they might do it.  He wouldn’t break the bank, but would cost more than we should probably spend right now.  It would take pressure off of filling that need in the draft and would allow a developmental player to come along more slowly so it’d be worth it IMO.  But, no, I definitely don’t see any luxury spending happening.

I agree but we should of made that happen with a arrow ⬆️ player not a guy that's in decline like Ingram . Ingram didn't even record a single sack last season. But I do agree the less holes on the team the more it allows us to go BPA in draft.

  9. 18 hours ago, BarleyNY said:

The restructure option clauses I’m talking about just convert some of this season’s salary to a signing bonus, which would be paid upon execution.  Looking closer I see that for Tre it’s $7.5M and the window closes today.  That will clear $6M this season and move it out. Link

Dawkins also has $7.5M that can be converted by today.  It will clear $5.6M.  It’s less because it will be spread over 4 years instead of 5 like Tre’s.  Link

They shouldn't kick the can down the road for 3rd tier free agents. Its not worth it. We missed our opportunity to get a difference making free agent. From here on out expect vet min deals.

What do you think the 30th pick is worth a year later?

It really depends who's on the board if a guy like Ojulari is there u can't move bk because u won't get him in that area. With that being said I don't know if Ojulari is a Mcd type DE he's a little under sized and wins with speed . Mcd traditionally likes bigger bodied bull rushers.

Trading 30+61 for an 18 puts us at  -1.32 about even trade That puts us a trade with Miami or Washington.

I ran a mock draft with a few different calculators and these were just some of the players that were available.

    Edge Kwity Payne

    Edge Greggory Rousseau

    TE Kyle Pitts

    CB Caleb Farley

    T Christian Darrisaw

    CB Jayce Horn

    LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah

    RB Najee Harris

Funny how much these sims vary

This is something just for fun

Kwity or Koramoah otherwise I pass on trading up.

Well, yeah it's GM talk, but that doesn't make it less real. It's completely real.

He doesn't like to kick the can down the road. He didn't say he wasn't able to do that. He said he didn't like to do it, and he said he's not going to do it, and for good reason. Overdoing it is financially unsound in the long run even if it provides instant gratification.

Sure, even if you're close to the limit on your first credit card, you can use your second one to pay it off so you can borrow more money. It works great short-term but it's bad practice. I love that we have a GM that gets this.

I see what your saying and agree to a certain extent but there was also cuts he could and should of made instead of restructuring with Butler and Addison. I realize they opened up nearly 4mil in space but if we cut them it would of been 13mil . There's your edge rusher money right there and u can sign a bkup DT in free agency for cheap and still a little money to play with.

Continuity is good if u have something good to begin with but Addison and Butler were not very good last yr and on top of that Addison is going to be 34yrs old this coming season.  When it comes to Butler he's still nearly 5mil against the cap after his restructure and for a team that's running on cap fumes that doesn't make much sense . U just don't pay a bkup DT that kind of money.

Don't get me wrong I love Beane I just thought he dropped the ball this off-season and it's arguable that he's not that good in free agency as well. I believe he flourishes when signing vet min deals but when he dishes out the money to new comers like Norman, Butler, Addison, Jefferson, Vontae , Klien & Murphy it's been a underwhelming job to say the least in that department.

Jackson seems like he's gonna sign a deal that's waaaay out of the Bills price range.

I'm so irritated that the cap shrunk this year. I really feel that some of the edge rushers and corners on the market could have really helped the Bills, and we would have had roughly $30M instead of $5M when free agency started.

    Grrrrrr.

Money isn't a issue if we really wanted any player we could of opened up the space to do so. The cap is gonna shoot threw the roof starting next yr so all that kicking the can talk is just GM speak in this case.

The Front office loves the team they have otherwise they would of made the moves. This was the best yr I ever seen in free agency especially on Defense the streets were loaded with talent . Pass rushers and corners were in abundance but if u look to 2021 the free agent list gets very small at those positions. Carl Lawson deal will be small change in a couple yrs we should signed him . We dropped the ball by not doing anything in my opinion.

Third, I don’t know who doughboy88 is?? 🤔. Maybe the number caused you to make the connection but maybe stop listening to those voices inside your head so much.

how many of “mostly if not all” teams went 13-3 or better last year chief?

i’d venture a guess based on this post that you haven’t won a fantasy league in at least 10 years.

Ok Chief, actually I won 10 comibined across 3 leagues so that's that.

Btw I didn't know the Bills can take there record with them into the following season. If u don't make adjustments the league will make adjustments to u. Obviously the Chiefs found something that worked very well vs us and other teams will follow suit . What will we do to combat that? Also I can name u a laundry list of teams that went 12-4 and 13-3 only to fall the following season . I'm not saying that's gonna happen to us but I believe McBeane doesn't go into every meeting saying we went 13-3 so we're good .

Thanks for sharing your knowledge here I appreciate it DoughBoy88 . We are blessed to learn from such an astoute Bills fan.

  16. I'll tell u what I play alot of Fantasy and I have 4 tvs going on Sundays nearly all NFL teams activate and play 3 running Bks . I miss the days of the workhorses that seems to be disappearing in today's game.

There's alot of reasons for teams using the committee approach and most of them are valid but in my opinion I believe using 1 workhorse gives the player a chance to get into a rythem . I hope we can find a back that's so much better then the rest that he stays on the field for 70/80% of the plays . A true 3 down back that only comes out when he's tired. I really believe the Bills are 1 bk away from competing for the Superbowl we need to complete are big 3 of the 2020s .

U can call me old school if u like but I loved watching Kelly, Thurman & Reed as well as others terriorise the rest of the NFL along with other big 3s like the Colts with Peyton, Edge & Harrison or the Cowboys with Aikman , Emmitt & Irvin. We're 1 player away and I don't see him on this roster yet. Hopefully we find our guy this off-season.

That wasn't the question. How many times in the McDermott era have 3 backs touched the ball on offense in the same game? In 2019 I seem to remember games where we only dressed two backs. 3rd running back on this team is a back of the roster position.

We do only use 2 backs for the majority of the time Mcd been here and we haven't been a passing team that whole time either. Maybe a couple gms in 2019 we used all 3 , Singletary, Gore and Yeldon but to be honest I can't remember even that.

  18. 17 minutes ago, GunnerBill said:

Why does it matter that it is a running back rather than a kicker or a WR? The Bills are a pass heavy team. How often have they given 3 different backs carries in the same game since McDermott has been here? I'd venture not many. 3rd running back dressed on gameday is as "bottom of the roster" as it gets in Buffalo.

Mostly if not all teams in the NFL activate 3 useable bks on game days even the passing teams. We're the only team that doesn't.
