  1. My name is taken from a character in a famous movie called "Titanic".   My character is a Spanish swashbuckler played by Leonardo DiCaprio who is searching for a six fingered man onboard an ocean liner only to fall in love with some rich chick instead.  It's your classic, boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl lets boy drown in the frozen north Atlantic story we've all seen a hundred times before.  Rather formulaic but worth a rental during a long bye week without football.

Hey, he has already sat two 4th quarters and is still on that pace.

These 4th quarters on the bench may be what keeps Allen from it.  I suspect he will end up sitting for at least six quarters worth of football this regular season, which if my abacus is correct, equals a game and a half of offensive production that comes off JA's total.

  3. For years Penn State was Linebacker U.  The Bills are becoming Defensive Back U.  They are able to take midround and late round defensive backs and even UDFAs and coach them up to become legitimate NFL players.

Both Frazier and McDermott were defensive backs and that insight seems to give them an eye for talent and they know how to coach them up once they bring them in.  Our secondary should be a strength for years to come with Tre, Taron, Elam, Hyde, and Benford all locked down.

  4. That could have been a pivotal moment in the game.  It should have been 10 yards and an automatic 1st down for the Bills.  Instead the Bills punt the ball back to the Chiefs.  There were two refs in the backfield watching the play happen.  You can see the refs arm in the picture staring at Jones and Allen as it happens.   He can't be more than ten feet away from the play.

I just don't know how that doesn't get called.

  5. There are a few things that we haven't seen a lot of so far in Ken Dorsey's offense and I wonder if he is still just developing his playbook, or if he has deliberately kept some things close to the vest for this game versus the Chiefs this week so he can put some looks on the field that the Chiefs defense might be less prepared for.   Some of the things that we haven't seen a lot of, or any or this year on offense are;

    Pre snap motion

    Jet Sweeps

    Empty backfield sets

Singletary and Cooks behind  / flanking Allen

    Frequent screen passes

Going empty backfield and spreading out (pick your favorite five)  Diggs / Davis / Shakir / McKenzie / Singletary / Knox would be a nightmare for a defense to cover.  Shakir or McKenzie rocketing back into the backfield in motion and faking the pitch or actually taking the pitch from Allen with a full head of steam.   Moving Diggs all over the field before the snap to expose the defense and cause miss matches.  These are some of the things I hope we see more of on Sunday

  6. This is a big game for the Bills.  The Head-to-Head tie break might very well decide if the road to the Super Bowl goes through Orchard Park or Arrowhead.  Don't think the Bills front office doesn't know it.  I wonder if the Bills / Dorsey have been keeping a lot of their dynamic plays close to the vest so far like jet sweeps,  pre-snap motion, and heavy involvement of the TEs in the game under wraps for maximum effect this week.

    I sure hope so.

It does not matter who the back is - teams stack the line and they push our linemen back.

Wasn't our last offensive play this week a QB sneak?

You're right, it was, but the Ravens were trying to let Allen score so they could get the ball back with enough time on the clock to do something.  Allen just fell forward past the line of gain and got a fresh set of downs to run the clock out with.

  8. Allen is almost impossible to stop on short yardage when he rolls out.  I think Dorsey has been trying to get the backs involved in short yardage, and Moss seemed to do well with it in the preseason, but during the regular season the backs are getting stoned in the backfield.  The O-line is just not getting any push at all and we are more likely to lose a yard than gain one when the backs get the handoff.

It was 4th and 1 at the Ravens 26 yard line yesterday.  Josh rolled out to his left and there were defenders there prepared for the roll out and it looked like he might get tackled for a loss.  Josh did some of his shifty Elvis hips stuff and managed to cut the ball up avoiding the defenders and got 4 yards and the 1st down.  Josh is way to big to be as slippery as he is running the ball.   Even if a defender gets his hands on Josh he can usually bull forward and drag the defender for a yard or two.   Allen's speed, agility, and strength make him very hard to bring down when he gets a head of steam moving along the line of scrimmage and then decides to cut it up.

These Allen roll outs were the most successful method for the team to convert short yardage last season, and despite Dorsey's best efforts, were in the same boat again this year.  It's not optimal to have our QB be the short yardage back too, but when the Bills really need to move the ball a yard, rolling Allen out is the best option.

  9. What we know

This is the first week that Tre is eligible to come off of short term PUP list and start to practice with the team.

From the time Tre comes off PUP and starts to practice, the Bills will have 21 days to activate him to the regular roster or he will have to be placed on season ending IR.

McDermott was asked yesterday about Tre's status and he essentially gave no answer except that Tre continues to work to get back.

    What we suspect

Even if Tre is 100% right now I would be shocked for him to lace it up against the Steelers this week due to the matchup.  The Bills secondary should be able to hold up against  the Steeler's offense without Tre in there this week.

The big question is, will they play him the following week vs the Chiefs in Arrowhead.  It would obviously be a big boost to have him back on the field for that pivotal matchup with plenty of playoff seeding consequences for the Bills.

If the Bills don't play him in Week 6 versus the Chiefs, Tre will then have an additional week to rehab with the bye week in Week 7 and will have to be activated before the Week 8 tilt on Sunday night against the Packers at home.  This might have been the plan all along.

When he comes back he will likely be on a snap count and alternating time with Elam and Jackson as he plays back into form.

This is a very very fine defense, but no, they aren't the kind of defense the Ravens had the Trent Dilfer year.

Opposing teams scored 18 TDs that year against the Ravens. 18 TDs in 16 games, and two of those were pick sixes. That's an average of one offensive TD scored by Ravens opponents per game. The Bills have allowed seven TDs in four games, all scored by the opposing offenses.

The 2000 Ravens defense allowed 10.3 PPG, the best in the history of 16 game seasons. The Bills 14.5 PPG is still damn good, but doesn't compare.

Those Ravens put up an insane record of 23 INTs and 26 fumbles recovered by the defense. That's 49 turnovers in 16 games, 3.1 per game.

Way way way too early to assume the Bills D should be mentioned in the same breath as those guys.

    All fair points Thurman.

That Ravens' defense was the best defense I have ever seen play (I'm in my early 50's).   I think the game has changed over the last 22 years.  The quarterback can't be touched today.  Neither can the wide receivers.  No defense will ever put up numbers like that again with the way the game is played now-a-days.  It's hard to compare teams across different eras.

Which all due respect…people wake up in the morning and decide to start a start an argument thread?

    1.  I've been up all night, I work nights.  🙂

    2.  I'm just putting an opinion out there.  I expected there would be some people who would disagree.  That's ok.   I'm open to having my mind changed by a good argument.   I appreciate the people here who can disagree with someone without feeling the need to throw stones in the process.

    3.  It took me some time to look up the stats and put my post together.  I didn't just throw an opinion out there with no supporting evidence.

    4.  This is a chat board where we all get together and chat about the Bills.  Sometimes we agree, sometimes we disagree, but we all love coming here to read everyone's opinion.  That doesn't happen if people don't take the time to start threads.

You’re going to have quite a few “Josh is the reason” replies. I get it, he’s really good, I mean really good. For me it’s the defense too. Imagine if Marino or Kelly had this defense? Or even Fouts? I’m so glad we’re not hanging our hat on Josh only.

I'm sure I will too, and I have no problem with that opinion, Josh is incredible.  Through four games of the season the defense is giving up an average of 14.5 points a game.  There aren't too many NFL offenses that can't muster 15 points a week on average.  I'm not taking anything away from Josh, just pointing out how amazing this defense is.

The defense is the best I have seen with this team in a very long time. However, I have to disagree with you, my friend. Allen is the strength of this team. The fortunes of this team go as Allen goes.

I agree with you that Allen is the cornerstone of this franchise, but this is the kind of defense the Ravens won a Super Bowl with, and their quarterback was Trent Dilfer.  The combination of Allen and this defense is scary.

  14. The sizzle on this team is Josh Allen flinging the ball all over the pitch, but the steak is clearly the defense.  They have shut down every team they've played so far.

They gave up 20 points in the first half against the red hot Ravens offense and blanked them in the second.  That 20 point total against the Raven's offense is even more impressive when you consider that 10 of those points came directly off turnovers by the offense.  The Ravens scored a TD on a drive that started on the Bills' 4 yard line after the opening drive interception, and the Ravens kicked a field goal on a drive that started on the Bills 36 yard line after Singletary fumbled in the second quarter.

This defense is also a ball hawking defense and has 9 turnovers through the first 4 games, 7 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries.  There are only two teams with more, the Eagles and Ravens have 10 each.

They are also 4th in the NFL with sacks through 4 games with 13.  There are only three teams with more, Bucs 14, Cowboys 15, and the Eagles with 16.

The Bills defense is second in points allowed per game at 14.5.  Only the 49ers are ahead of us averaging 12.3 per game.  The 49ers still have to play their week 4 game tonight against the Rams.

The Bills defense is second in yards allowed per game at 234.  Only the 49ers are better at 227 yards and as noted above, they still have their week 4 tilt against the Rams to play.

When you factor in the amount of injuries on the defensive side of the ball for the Bills these performances are even more impressive.  We are getting close to having Tre White and Ed Oliver back on the field and that should only kick things up a notch.  When Josh Allen and the Bills offense is clicking they are amazing to watch, but the defense is the strength of this team.   I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the 2022 Bills defense has the potential to be one of the all time great NFL defenses.

A second Concussion in less than a week can kill someone. Him having that kind of response is terrifying. People should go to jail over this.

Two mild concussion is close proximity to each other is often worse for the brain than a single major concussion.   The worry is that I think both of Tua's concussions in the last four days were major.  He could really have some lasting damage from these concussions.

Tua playing again Sunday and then again tonight is malpractice.  I don't use that word lightly.

We know that there is supposed to be an independent doctor who has the final say, who is supposed to ultimately be responsible for concussion monitoring, and obviously they failed.

Having an independent doctor there does not absolve the Dolphin's medical staff from their responsibility to Tua.   They should have benched him last week and put him in the concussion protocol.   Period.  It should have never even gotten to the independent doctor.

I guarantee you everyone involved in the decision to put Tua back in Sunday is sweating bullets right now.
