Ain't that the truth. But let's give him some credit. Their defense was better under Rex

With the Jets, he was able to manufacture a pass rush without talent, see Maybin, Aaron. Bowles can't seem to generate any kind of pass rush while playing a lot of man to man and single high. That's a recipe for lots of failure. I blame MacCagnan as well because they never bothered drafting any edge players. They still have not replaced John Abraham and Calvin Pace and it's been years now.

Let's not forget that their run game coordinator is Rick Dennison.

  2. This typeof trade is better made in the off season. He wasn't able to pick up the offense in such a short period of time and a lot of players can't. If they were going to take the cap, hit they should have kept him on the roster automatically. I mean it would have made sense to keep him over Khari Lee, a 4th tight end no? I'm not saying Coleman is a big deal, I'm saying his acquisition and quick release made no sense.

Here are the guys who made the final 53 who are no longer on the team:

    Jeremy Kerley

    Khari Lee

    Ramon Humber

    Phillip Gaines

    Vontae Davis

    Marshall Newhouse

Whatever you think of Coleman, he should have been kept over some of these bums.

  3. I could see NE grabbing him just to be trolls. They did have him in for a predraft visit.

More likely I see Jacksonville grabbing him. Doug Marrone and Nate Hackett have no idea what a good quarterback looks like. They had him in for a pre draft workout. He's basically Blake Bortles without any natural talent.

  4. One other thought on the OL for now.

I do like Ike Boettger and I hope we see him work in at RG soon. I know he played guard and tackle at Iowa and projects as a guard. I'm curious if he can play center. He's about the same size as Mitch Morse, who was a tackle at Missouri and converted to center. Juan Castillo oversaw the conversion of Ryan Jensen from a right tackle to a center, and he  just got a boatload of money from Tampa this offseason.

Ike is a converted tight end, so we know he is athletic and he is also smart. Again, it's just an idea, but I'm curious to see if it's something that could happen here.

  5. If we wound up with something like:

    Dawkins-Teller- Nick Easton-AJ Cann-Daryl Williams

I don't think it is unrealistic and I like the ages of these guys. Easton and Williams are coming off injury so may be cheaper and I like Cann as a RG. I do think Williams will still be the most exp nsive of the bunch.

  6. The free agent market on centers has a couple of interesting names.

Mitch Morse - I think he is the guy with the highest ceiling. 6-6, 305 has been very good for Kansas City. His problem has been injuries. He missed a few games last year and has been out his year as well. Started 42 games. He will 27 next year.

Matt Paradis - I think he goes back to Denver, but is a very interesting guy as well. 6-3, 300 and going to turn thirty next year. He's been very durable starting 57 games until he broke his leg this year. He is going to require an overpay.

Nick Easton - I think this is the guy we wind up with. A Harvard graduate who can play guard or center. He started his career in camp with the Baltimore Ravens with Juan Castillo as his line coach. He's been traded a couple of times as well. He was an undrafted free agent who played so well for the Ravens in the preseason that they were able to turn him into a seventh round pick in a trade with the miners. 6-3, 307, will be 27 next year. He's on IR because of a bulging disc in his neck. He's only started 17 games in his career so far.

Basically that is it. I think Easton makes sense because he is versatile and smart and he should not be super expensive to sign. He also has a history with Castillo. Ryan Khalil is still a very good player, but I don't love the idea of a 35 year old center. I like a guy in that 27-28 range to grow with the rest of the guys.

That's why it's incumbent on McDermott to make it crystal clear that as long as he stays healthy Allen is playing  the final 6 games.  A single game, good or bad, won't impact this.

We fans will scream and the moron sports writers will pontificate but in the end there's only a QB controversy if McDermott and the Bills screw this up.  IMO they screw this up by playing head games with Allen over who starts in 2 weeks.

    Perfectly stated!

To me it's Barkley .. and only for this reason ... maybe compared to (Peterson, Anderson) .. he can take these two weeks with Allen and show Allen how to prepare and see if he can in fact orchestrate something similar vs. the Jags defense ala the Jets.  I think Josh needs to see another (hopefully solid offensive performance by someone else ... certainly not observed with Peterman or Anderson at the helm) for his learning purposes.  If Barkley doesn't do it again ... it gives Allen another two weeks to heal up ... watch / learn ... if Barkley crashes and burns against the Jags ... then it moves up Josh's timeline  .. but no matter what he gets in for December to close out the year.

Im not against this idea. It gives you a longer look at Barkley...maybe he gets re-signed to be the backup next year. As long as Allen is guaranteed the last four games, I don't care what happens.

  8. You start Allen 100%.

But because we are the Bills, you guys know what is going to happen right? Allen will play like ? ? ? and everyone will be calling for Barkley again and now you have a quarterback controversy.

What I saw from Barkley was some of the most efficient quarterbacking I have seen from a Bills quarterback in years (though Allen's game vs the Vikes was pretty ridiculous). So I think people on the Barkley side are saying, maybe we ride it out for a couple of games and see what we have with Matt. If he keeps winning, stay with him, and if he gets killed against the Jags, you turn back to Allen.

I see the arguments on both sides.

  9. I tend to agree. I saw simple football, tackling, blocking, running good routes, and a quarterback taking what the defense was giving and taking shots when they were there.

I am am a big X's and O's guy, but you are correct. Simple concepts with everyone doing their job. The offense looked New England esque, which is what I was expecting with Daboll. Their concepts are simple, but they do them really well. We saw that for the first time today in my opinion.

  10. I liked what I saw from Wallace. To be fair, Gaines was maybe missed in run support a bit, I thought Levi played soft there. But coverage wise you can't compare. I'm excited to see Wallace play over the next few weeks.

And since we we are talking dbs, it is amazing how good Tre'davious is.
