Ian Rapoport on X: "🚨 🚨 🚨 Former #Jets starting QB and No. 2 pick Zach Wilson is on the move. Sources say he’s being traded to the #Broncos, hoping for a fresh start. The deal includes a late-round pick swap (6th for a 7th) and NYJ will pay some of Wilson’s roughly $5.5M salary. https://t.co/7Y1KShZ3sg" / X (twitter.com)

They were talking about this on OBL.  Brownie and Tasker both said the Jets would be lucky to get anything for him and then floated Denver as the likely taker since all they have is Stidham and Ben Dinucci.  So...they called it.

I also thought it was interesting that when the media asked him about whether it amounted to playing with a "second team", he specifically mentioned that he's been with Micah and Po "since I've been here, right?" and that losing them was going to hurt as far as being able to come in and talk to them not just about football but about life.  Further in, asked about transitioning from Mitch Morse at C josh said "I love Mitch with every ounce of my being, he's one of the greatest dudes in the entire world, I truly mean that, and I think if you talk with anyone else they'd say the same.  A lot of wisdom that he had, I wish him nothing but the best in Jacksonville.  I got to spend a little bit of time with him the last couple of weeks, gonna miss him for sure." Near the end, when asked about Micah's charity softball tournament he said the same thing about Hyde that he was "one of the premier humans on this planet; his heart is always in the right place" and "he's meant so much to me and my career here, just being someone I could lean on, someone I could talk to, someone I could vent to, I hope he would say the same about me and I cherish our friendship."

    1) I thought it was interesting - Tre' White has been here longer than Josh as well, but he didn't mention him in the same way

    2) Josh came across as well-prepared to be asked about Diggs, but the things he did say - about "my lasting memory of Stef will be the receiver who helped me become the QB that I am today, and I'll always thank him for that" - didn't come across with nearly the same genuineness or intensity as what he said about Morse or Hyde or Po.

For the "Josh doesn't work in the offseason" crowd, at about 6:30 in Josh talks about how he's "gotten some PT work the last couple months, making sure I'm staying on top of that and making sure my body is in the best shape it can be"

It was really a solid interview.  Josh is such a genuine guy.  He gives credit where credit is due and clearly has an affection for his team mates.  At the same time, he mentioned that he trusts Beane with bringing in the best players for the team and acknowledges his coaches...particularly Brady...for what he is learning.  Class and humility all the way.

For sure. But you can learn from history. It doesn't typically repeat itself, but it often rhymes

I agree.  Britt and Woolen certainly played well even as rookies.  The jury still isn't out on Elam though.  I think with the changes in the Bills secondary, Elam will get a real chance this year to prove his worth.

Did you watch Josh's interview by any chance?

He was asked about losing so many captains and what guys he thought would step up and be looked to as the next leaders

He said he thinks guys who work hard and specifically go the extra bit are the ones who other guys naturally follow.  He specifically called out Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown as two examples.

When someone asked him what it takes to be a leader for the team the last thing he said was, "Someone who doesn't care who is scoring or getting the ball, just as long as we are winning."

I love him for saying that!

I like Beane .. But I think by his standards he has made a few bad calls over the past 2 years … perhaps he is feeling a bit of heat .. or it’s just the demands he puts on himself ..

I think that is what it is.  It's the business side of things.   He had to say goodbye to a lot of players that he specifically brought in to build a roster that could win a Superbowl.   Last year he built a team with a great deal of depth.  Draft picks were poached by other teams...and are starters that couldn't make the Bills team last year.   He stretched the Cap to its maximum in the process.  Then with all of the injuries, that depth was tested...and the Bills fell short once more.  So...this year he had to pay the piper and release players that I believe he truly loved and appreciated.  He needs to retool the roster with a draft class that is lacking in a number of areas.  And the league moved the goalpost for compensatory picks, leaving the Bills without a 3rd round pick in a draft where he really was counting on one.  He has a big task ahead and he's a perfectionist when it comes to his work.  He does not want to let the team, the owner, the coaching staff or the fans down.  So...the strain is there.

2022 draft the move definitely would have been to trade back and take two day 2 swings at CB rather than trade up and force it for Elam (and still take Benford in 6th!)

Could have gone Cam Taylor Britt with the trade back 2nd rounder, kept the 4th and taken Tariq Woolen, and taken Benford as a CB with potential to move over to safety. We'd be rich in CB's right now...

This is about as loaded of a WR draft as that draft was at CB, wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to trade back a little and take two on day 2 and another sleeper value on day 3 (Jalen Coker type)

    Hind sight is 20-20.

And every year players are drafted late that contribute to teams. In addition to FA that do the same. Josh and Lamar ended up home runs and the other 3 ..not  so much (Baker has been decent) The Rams had it right on Nacua and nobody else did. So I would give that about zero thought. Having said that not sure 11 players make the Bills. Trade the super late picks and move up. Or keep them all and maybe 248 makes it 😂 who really knows!!

Couldn't agree more.  The Bills always find contributors late in the draft.  We only have 10 picks as the 6th was traded to Houston in the Diggs trade.  The Bills need depth so this is probably a good year for rookies to make the team.  Wouldn't surprise me either if they parlay a pick or two into next year's draft especially a 5th rounder, since we traded next year's 5th as well.

2000 yards in 14 games will never be matched

Unfortunately that achievement was eclipsed by Nicole's death.  When you mention OJ Simpson you don't think of those 2000 yards.

    This

Palmer and Kyle Allen mentioned something about "Kincaid is out here now" on one of their recent podcasts.

IIRC Kincaid said something about he and Shakir were throwing with Josh last off-season.

I can't tell you whether Allen does, or does not, put in the off-season and off-field work to elevate his play to another level

I don't need to tell you the level he's at is pretty damned fine

I'm just a bit aghast at the credulity people display about little clips on social media.  "Pics or it didn't happen"

I agree.  Josh has never been one to seek self promotion or stage photo/video ops.  In fact, quite the opposite.

Diggs also said awhile back that he doesn’t think a lot people are working hard enough in the offseason. Diggs is very intense I could believe there may be too much low key going on.

I never saw anything about Diggs working out in the off season until just before the Texans trade.  All of these off season practice posts are staged.  I will wait for OTAS and training camp and judge what these players are all about.

That's exactly the same point i was going to make.

Diggs in B-lo was a distraction, a big-time diva and a headache for the franchise, has lost a step, is aging, but he goes to Houston and holy ****, he's the king. He's exactly what a team needs to put them over the top.

The media flipping both ways, saying that Buffalo doesn't really need this frustration on its hands and yet, they turn around saying what the hell are the Bills doing, they're tanking this year, they've given up, throwing in the towel, etc.

If it wasn't so blatantly obvious that the media has no idea what they are talking about or just creating some click-bait, it would almost be comical.

This...most don't.  They only look at the surface of things.  I was watching Around the Horn on ESPN the day of the trade, and the most knowledgeable and reasoned opinion came from Mina Kimes.  She sighted his stats the last half of the season and in the playoffs each season, whereas the others looked at Diggs overall statistics over the four years.  Mina agreed with the Bills move.  The others thought it a mistake.

I remember when old Buddy Ryan said that, "all he does is catch TD's" about Chris Carter.  Now Buddy, an old D guy, hated when the O scored too fast and didn't give his D enough time to recuperate on the sidelines.

Now equate it to what our roster is today......

We are setting up the old "death by a thousand cuts" approach style O. We've got the roster to slice and dice the middle of the field, where we can control the clock, manage the TOP and carve up D's a little at a time, instead of in bunches.

Yes, we will find our WR1 to alleviate and open up the entire field for the playbook, but as it sits now and contrary to what the media thinks, our roster is exactly what we need it to be in order to control the middle of the field.....which is the direction opposing D's are starting to make more of a focal point.

    I have spoken.

Knowledgeable members of the media see it and get it.  I'm amazed at the "expert" opinions that say absolutely nothing because they aren't paying attention.

Diggs is signed through next year as well. If he goes to Dallas it would be by way of trade or that he's cut. If he's released, he would not be eligible for the comp pick formula

Houston just voided those years.  They accelerated $3.5M to Diggs this year in guaranteed money, but Diggs becomes a free agent next year.

     the Bills have underachieved

Which is why many NFL executives are praising Beane for the move.   If we haven't won with these aging players, it's time to reset and move forward with different players.

The Bills will carry a dead money charge of $31.096 million next season after trading Diggs, according to Roster Management System. That will be the highest-known dead money charge ever for a wide receiver in any season, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

    I hope you are right.

No...the cap hit is this year.  And since Diggs had a cap hit of over $27M this year anyway...the difference is only a bit over $3M on this year's cap.  Next year, Diggs is off the books entirely.

lost out on that trade!! a 2nd next year? rebuild i guess

Disagree.  Texans don't have a number 1 this year, so they had little to offer in this year's draft.  Getting a number two in 2025...and as One Bills Live reported it is Minnesota's pick (due to a trade) which should be high next year...this is more than you would expect for a 30 year old receiver who would have been cut next year.  San Diego only got a 4th for Keenan Allen.  So...when you think about it, this trade makes sense.

    Totally unfair.

We still don't know what caused that freefall. Was it that with the playbook from an old OC and the playcalling of a new OC they couldn't find a good way to use him? Nobody can say for sure, but that is very likely a large part of the problem, if not most of it.

You can pretend that it was all on Diggs. But there's no reason to think that's right. Could easily have been on others to a large extent. Now we'll never know. Pretending we do know, and putting it all on Diggs, is just sour grapes.

And it's a stone fact that he was drawing the vast bulk of the coverage and making things much easier for the other WRs.

Certain kinds of WRs tend to start going downhill early. Diggs' type, the exceptional route-runners not dependent of top end speed, tend to last longer. Every reason to think he'll still be very very productive for several more years. Unfortunately.

We are going to pay him in the high $20M range to watch him on TV catching passes in Texas. This was a horrendous time to let him go.

But it doesn't seem like we had any better choices, with how relations with him were proceeding.

Actually this was a good time to let him go.  The cap hit this year is only $3M more than it would have been with Diggs on the roster.  Next year, Diggs would have no value in trade since he would be a year older and likely cut for the cap savings.  No dead cap hit moving forward.  With the depth at wideout in this year's draft, it will  be easier to find his replacement.

The compensation needs to be looked at in conjunction with the fine print - ie - are the Texans eating any of the dead cap and if so how much?

I wouldn't be too upset IF the Texans provide some cap relief as part of the package.

One Bills Live reported that the 2nd round pick is the one the Texans got from Minnesota...which should be a higher number 2, due to Minnesota starting either Sam Darnold or a rookie QB.

I'm hoping Beane already has a deal in place to move up and get a good wideout who we can enjoy on a rookie contract for a while.

He's calculating.  He has a plan in place.  He doens't make moves for the sake of making moves.

I don't mind Diggs going - it struck me he had rapidly become a problem in the locker room rather than someone who could be relied upon. But only a 2nd round pick in 2025 for him. A very poor return which does suggest a level of desperation.

Or that the rest of the teams in the NFL have watched Diggs decline and disappear later in the season and realized Diggs isn't worth more than that.

I think because this draft is so deep at wideout, Beane judged that it would be best to move on this year, get his replacement in the draft and lower the cap moving forward.  As much as I like Diggs, in thinking about this move, it makes sense.
