I disagree. Jackson’s passes outside the numbers are a weakness, and his offense is built to cover that up. Even the beat reporters at the Baltimore Sun pointed this out, noting his lack of arm strength on those throws after Saturday nights loss. There’s a reason they’re built the way they are and focus on those seam routes. No plan is fool proof ( need the players to execute it) , but Jackson has been figured out by the league’s defensive coaches. The game plan was formulated around his weaknesses, not the WRs. Bills D did a better job containing his running though.

Don't you think this is something that he can work on this offseason.  He had a specific plan last offseason and it worked for him so maybe this offseason it's passing outside the hashes.  I don't think he's been figured out honestly.  I just think it was a plan that was good against that particular Ravens team.  We'll see.

  2. I don't think our plan was fool proof.  I just think it was good vs this particular Ravens team.  I think going forward the Ravens will need to add a perimeter threat because that's exactly what this plan gives up.  It gives you the 1 v 1 on the outside.  Most of Jackson's passes are to the middle of the field and down the seams and most of the receiving talent does its damage in the middle of the field and in the seams.  If they add a perimeter threat that can win the 1v1's  then teams are not going to be able to run this as a blue print.

  3. He improved, however, he still misses some things and to me that's just a part of the maturation process and learning the position and what you are seeing.  Here is an example.  This guy called him a bad passer, I wouldn't say that, but I think the guy some insight on the potential of some of these plays.

Granted, some of this is cherry-picking and some of it is decent analysis.  JA is still my guy though.

  4. I just think the moment got too big for Coach Mc and Josh.  McD had some really questionable management at key moments.  I didn't like the 4th and 20 + going for it.  What in the world?  Luckily Bill O'Brien was just as bad.  Josh I think for as great of a 1st half he played, he tried to do too much in those critical moments that cost us a lot of yardage and moved us out of what could have potentially been a game winning FG prior to the overtime period.  It's just one of those things where we didn't do well in specific situations.  That's what's sticking out like a sore thumb for people right now, but let's not forget all of the great stuff that the team did leading up to those moments.  I also did not like some of Daboll's calls in these same moments but I understand from a formation standpoint what they were trying to do.  For instance, the play with Dimarco out wide.  I'm sure we were trying to get a tell on the coverage.  I just didn't like the personnel for that formation/look.  And I didn't like it all the WRs on verts there, but i get what he was trying to do.  In any case, it was a good ride.  Lots to learn from and get better at, but this was a quick turnaround for us.  3 years of McD and 2 playoff births.  FO just needs to see what is needed for that extra push.

  5. You hate to see it, but down the stretch, the moment got too big for Coach Mc and Josh.  It's a learning experience and we'll bounce back but we got really bad in the critical moments.  But luckily O'Brien couldn't handle the moment either and we had a chance, we just couldn't execute.  I like how far we went this season, now we just have to build and continue to mature.

  6. I don't like linebackers spying Lamar primarily because it opens up passing lanes.  I think the biggest test here is just sheer physicality.  That's the Ravens and that's always been Greg Roman, we know this.  They are going to get after it in the trenches.  You just have to win there.  If you can't win there then there's going to be trouble.  Roman really hasn't changed the game plan that much because teams are having issues stopping what they are doing, and I suspect that he won't veer away from what they've been doing all season until someone is able to stop them.  Gotta save the other stuff for teams you'll see again.  So I expect to see a lot of the stuff they've already done, so it just comes down to physicality.

I like the idea of sending 5 on a contain rush but the problem there will be guys have to stay very disciplined in the middle or Jackson just runs up the middle.  It's certainly a problem offense.  I like what the Bills do on the backend to fluster quarterbacks, but this is a different type of offense to defend.    So I think McD and Fraiser will run a lot of line stunts this week to see if that can keep Lamar trapped in.  Stunt the line (TEX) and bring someone from the perimeter.   I'm not saying it will work but it's something to try.

  7. This stuff is just ridiculous.  It's not just the player, it's the agents that are doing this.  I mean think about this from an agents standpoint.  IF you are an agent, you probably know the guy isn't worth that, but you will push to get it to sell yourself and services to other players when they come into the league.  Hey, "look at what I got for this guy.  I can do the same for you when your time comes."

Has anyone else wondered about the possibility of sending a pick to Jacksonville for their Yannick Nsgsjgksdbgkjsfgbkjgfnjk? I feel like with Campbell and now Allen, he's a bit of an odd man out who will be wanting some cash money while they have none.

Hedging their bets on a rookie to play full time might not be a smart thing.  Their best bet is to cut Dareus in the offseason combined with getting relief from that Bortles contract and they should be in ok shape.

  9. I don't care who you are, missing anything when you are going into a new situation, puts you in the backseat rather than in the driver's seat.  To me, he of all people needs to be there.  If this were Landry or someone already familiar with the situation, the playbook, how the practices go so on and so forth, I wouldn't make the same claim.  But because he's going into a new situation, he should be there every damn day.

I really appreciate the breakdown as it points to some weak areas on our team, particularly the ineptitude of our offense as they afforded teams too much opportunity to play with leads and have the luxury of running the ball more. But that's another discussion.

But yeah, the run defense was weaker than it should have been.

As to the pass defense stats, I think what I posted earlier bears repeating: passing yards given up is NOT the meaningful stat; ypa and QB passer rating against are the two that matter most. We finished tied for 1st in ypa against and finished 3rd in passer rating against (Bears, Ravens). Anybody analyzing the strength of passing defense needs to look at those numbers first and foremost. It says a lot about the authors of that FOX Sports poll that they didn't.

    Shoddy research. At best.

I don't necessarily disagree, I was just going off of what Micah Hyde posted on twitter as proof.  What I would say though is yards per attempt and QB passer rating are directly impacted by the number of attempts.  In any case, to have the Browns even in the conversation is just idiocy on their part.  I guess they are everyone's redemption story now after being bad for so long.

I agree our secondary is good but teams did run all over us last year so no need for huge passing numbers.

While I think this needs to be clarified (ran all over us) I do think if you defend the run better, you will see more pass attempts and thus the yardage will go up a bit.  So I'm not sure I have an issue here except with having the Browns over the Bills and Jags.  The Browns, based on last year shouldn't even be on this list.  I'll show why I think this below.  But let's look at this.

The Bills had to defend the run 440 times

    The Bears 339 times

    The Ravens 354 times

    The Chargers 395 times

    The Browns 454 times

The Bills had to defend the pass 492 times 30.8 attempts per game

The Bears 615 times  38.4 attempts per game

The Ravens 577 times 36.1 attempts per game

The Chargers 533 times  34.2 attempts per game

The Browns 626 times  39.1 attempts per game

Here is how I look at this.  The Bills because they had to defend the run more than the top 3 teams on that list were going to have less pass defense snaps per game.  The top 3 not only defended the run well forcing teams to pass, but they had more pass attempts to defend and when it comes to passing yards per game, which is what Micah cites to suggest that we've been slighted, they are still in the top 10 in yards per game too.  So to me, because those teams had more attempts to defend and they are around 30 yds or less per game in the ball park, I can't say that we clearly have the better secondary, if this is just based on numbers.  We had enough less attempts to defend to make those numbers be in our favor.

The Browns though.  To me, this is where the slap in the face comes in.  Let's look at them.  Not only did they have to defend the run more than we did, they had a significant number more pass attempts to defend and their total yards per game is not even in the same ball park.  We at least should have been on the damn list over the Browns.  Either us or Jacksonville before the Browns.  So to wrap this up I don't necessarily have an issue with them talking about Chicago, Baltimore, and San Diego per se.  But to have the Browns mentioned over us is just foolishness.

This kid seems like has some serious talent so it's surprising he fell so far.

Any word on why we didn't trade up and grab him? I would have been much happier with our draft had we traded up for Metcalf instead of Singletary/Knox in the 3rd.

Easy.  If you study Beane and McD they are most likely going to have trench players rated higher than skill positions with the exception of QB.  To me that's the reason why they took Ford over Metcalf.  They had Ford rated higher.  They probably had Risner than Metcalf too, but had Ford rated higher than Risner.

After drafting Ford, who they are pencilling-in at RT, I think Nsekhe is just there in case Dawkins doesn't improve and in case of injury to either OT.  I still think they want Dawkins to be their LT.

This is technically true but not completely.  Beane said RT will be his 1st position, BUT that doesn't mean he will be running with the 1's.  So to me, it's about if Ford can handle that spot.  If he can then I wouldn't be surprised if there is a competition at LT.  In any case, I think the only solidified spot at this point is C.

  14. As far as the Tackles go based on Beane's comments:

    1.  Ford's first position is going to be RT.  This does not mean he will run with the 1's although if he shows he can he will.

    2.  Ty can play both.

    3.  Dion's at LT.

    4.  We will go with the best two tackles.

Now with that information to me it all depends on how Ford holds up at RT.  If he can take that spot, the battle at LT is going to be a good one and I have Ty winning it with his length, footwork and technique.  Dawkins has a tendency to drop his head at times and his hand technique could use a lot of work.  So to me I'm going to say IF Ford shows he can handle RT I'd go with:

    Ty, Spain, Morse, Dawkins,Ford

But if Ford cannot handle the RT spot then I'll have to think a little more about this.

Agree with Gunner 100%. Feliciano is a coach Johnson guy, but I think Long is the more talented player. Who ever loses the job becomes the main interior backup. Feliciano can also play center. That said, I think it makes some sense to keep Bodine on the roster as the backup center so that Feliciano and Long can focus on being guards. People are definitely sleeping on Long.

Nsehke will will be the swing. People need to get off the Dawkins to guard bandwagon. Beane said in his presser that they will have Dawkins at LT that they will try Ford at RT and that he's could also play guard, and the Nsehke gives them some felxibilty becuase he can play both left and right tackle,He said the best two tackles will start, acknowledging that Ford cannot play right. He did not mention Waddle. So in theory the only way all three of those guys starts is if Ford moves to guard...At least in the eyes of Beane. Our regime wants Dawkins and Ford to be the starting tackles imo.

I read it this way but didn't.  In the end he said we will go with the best two guys at Tackle.  He mentioned we have Dion at left.  And shortly afterwards said we will go with the best two guys at the Tackle spots so to me that's open competition.
