This "competition" was never much of a competition to begin with. They had Dodson, who is a career backup but knows the defense, and they had Bernard, who is the size of a safety. They never even made an attempt to replace Edmunds and I think it will come back to bite them in the you know what. The MLB is a very important piece in this defense. It's the Luke Kuechly position. You can't just stick a backup in there and call it a day

Perhaps the scheme will be adjusted to accommodate the players they DO have.

I never took Bernard seriously as a MLB because of his size.

I assumed from the start that Dodson would be the guy but Iwonder if Klein gets many reps

I've been a season ticket holder over 43 years. I'm trying to remember. But I can't ever recall there ever being a 1pm

preseason game in Buffalo. There usually 7pm starts. Their calling for possible thunderstorms and 81 degrees that day.

I was looking at the odds. It went from Buffalo +3 1/2  early in the week to +5 1/2 tuesday. Now its +4. I know no one bets on

preseason football. But I found it curious the Bills being underdogs at home. Must be the Anthony Richardson effect.

    Wah,wah,wah.

Odds are meaningless in preseason games because you don't know how starters will be used. It can get kind of sloppy and disorganized.   I'm just looking for sleepers and something positive from backups and rookies.

I think it means Isabella is no longer working with the WRs.

I read that as Isabella is working only with KR...not Isabella is the ONLY one working as KR.

He will continue to work with wide receivers, and its not necessarily a permanent status. I Interpret this to mean as far as RETURNS go,he is focusing on kickoffs, not punts. Harty previously made Pro Bowl returning punts so maybe KOR is Isabella's best shot.

Beane has a past history of finding trade partners for OL. With that in mind I'm thinking Greg Mancz is a possibility.

I wonder if they could hide Mancz on the practice squad. We assume Bates will be the primary backup to Morse but in case of emergency, who else could play center? Did I read that McGovern might have previously taken center reps?

I was looking at it from the perspective of keeping a first round pick who has been a disappointment.  Also, can’t imagine that his trade value would go anywhere but down as a backup to a guy he was picked to replace.

Maybe a disappointment to YOU. Did you see him play last year? Yes,he has to adjust to the Bills zone D but corners can take 2 or 3 years to develop.

Next question; would you be comfortable with the remaining depth? Are you ready to put Austin or Ingram or Lewis there?

I think the Bills have a good CB group that will be needed to defend 3,4 WR alignments.

I’m still hoping that the light comes on for Elam, but If he can’t win the starting job convincingly, he should be considered as a trade candidate. Question is, what could you get in return for him?

Elam is a first round pick in just the 2nd year of his rookie deal, adjusting to zone defense. Bills might adjust the scheme to fit and you  end CB depth. He isn't going anywhere.

Zach Martin is still a holdout for the Cowboys. I would love for the Bills to work out a trade. Martin is exactly what the Bills could use but financially I don't think Beane could make it work.

The Bills need another RIGHT GUARD? A highly paid 33 year old right guard? If Beane could raise that kind of money, he would be better off investing in a right TACKLE.

Sherfield is a big body at 220-plus pounds but seems to have better than average speed and reports (I haven't watched him play in games) of good hands. Clips like this inspire hope but even mediocre players make great grabs in camp once in a while.

I'd be very happy if the camp reports aren't another summer illusion but point to what we can expect in the regular season. I think with Diggs, Kincaid, Knox, and Davis, there's not a lot of pressure on Sherfield but I'm hoping he turns into a pleasant surprise as maybe WR 3 (not including Kincaid who is said to be a bigger slot WR than TE).

Seems to be disagreement on his size. I've read anywhere from 206 to 219.

  7. I have hard nothing about Shaq Lawson this summer: what is going on with him?

With the Bills first preseason game fast approaching I thought I'd take a look at where I see the roster at before the games take place. Bolded are in my view locks for the roster. Italicized are players that are "near locks" in my estimation. Looking over the roster spot by spot it strikes me that we are going to be letting quite a handful of really talented players go pretty soon. Some of these guys could have started for this franchise even 4-5 short years ago. Problems of having a deep roster.

QB: Josh Allen, Kyle Allen, Matt Barkley

Earlier in the off-season I viewed Kyle Allen as a lock. Now? Not quite sure. Sounds like he may be playing himself out of a job. One of Kyle or Barkley will likely make the roster as the backup (unless Beane makes a move) the other could be PS bound.

RB: James Cook, Damien Harris, Latavius Murray, Reggie Gilliam, Evans, Mims

Before the Hines injury I had Murray as a possible PS placeholder. Now, I believe he's destined for the TJ Yeldon role unless injury strikes. Gilliam makes it easily as well. Evans and Mims in my view are fighting for a PS role.

WR: Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, Trent Sheffield, Harty, Shorter, Shakir, Isabella, Shavers, Coulter, Patmon, Johnson.

Expecting some push back at this position. Sheffield is a lock in my eyes due to what sounds like a solid camp, Josh's admiration for him and the fact he plays ST. Shakir is a guy that I think needs to show something in PS games. Could one of Isabella, Shavers or Coulter push the former 5th rounder off the roster? Not likely but a strong showing by one of them and continued drops by Shakir may crack open the door.

TE: Dawson Knox, Dalton Kincaid, Morris, Sternberger, Wilson

Buffalo finds itself in rare territory here. For decades we couldn't find a decent TE...now it would seem we have 2. That moves the position battle down the line to TE3. I give the edge here to Morris but Sternberger and Wilson have a shot with at least one of them headed to a possible PS spot if they are chopped.

OL: Dawkins, McGovern, Morse, Bates, Brown, Torrence, Quessenberry, Shell, Doyle, Edwards, Doyle, and a cast of many others

Outside of the top 6 (and possibly Edwards) most of the other guys can end up anywhere from making the team, to the PS, to playing elsewhere or nowhere all together. I don't see it happening because they love his versatility, but if someone like Edwards shows well, does that lead to "Ryan Trade Bates?"

For those keeping track, that's 16 spots I have set in stone. Another 3 set to "near lock" for 19 roster spots claimed. On to the defense!

DL: Groot, Floyd, Von, Jones, Oliver, Ford, Lawson, AJE, Phillips, Settle, Boogie, Ray, Ankou, Kingsley, "the rest"

Insert token "depending on if Von starts on PUP" comment here. The ones I have highlighted as locks are pretty set in stone. I do have AJE (and am prepared to defend) as a near lock due to his progression as a pass rusher last year. I think Phillips is "close" to being a lock pending on health. Talent wise I question if Settle can make it, then look at his contract and realize Buffalo would gain almost nothing financially by letting him go. Can Ray/Boogie push Lawson for a spot? That's going to be a battle to see in the games.

LB: Matt Milano, Dodson, Williams, Bernard, Spector, Matakevich, Klein, Howard

Milano is a no brainer. Williams as well due to being a day 2 pick this year. I believe even if Dodson loses the MLB battle, he makes it for experience alone. Eye rolls around for Matakevich, I know. Bernard and Spector add depth and can contribute on ST. Klein I believe will be PS bound if he chooses to continue to play.

CB: White, Jackson, Elam, Benford, Johnson, Lewis, Neal, Ingram, Austin, Brown

Another deep group. I realize Lewis is covering Safety as well. Where he's listed in my view is just book keeping as he will offer depth at both spots. For me Neal was the closest "near lock" to being a bolded lock. I know some will disagree on both sides and opinions range from him being a pivotal part of the team to "he sucks".

S: Hyde, Poyer, Rapp, Hamlin, Marlowe, Anderson, Mayden

Our top 3 are unquestionably making it. After that a lot comes into play. Will the Bills value Marlowe for his experience? Hamlin for his upside? A sleeper here is the forgotten Anderson who the Bills signed very early in the off-season and may offer the best ST coverage of the group.

    ST: Ferguson, Bass, Martin

All locks. However, don't be surprised if Ferguson is released at initial cuts to open a spot if they need to get someone through to IR and brought back right after. Procedure move.

By my totals defense and ST rings up:

    20 spots locked in

    8 spots "near locks"

    Grand total of:

    36 roster locks

    11 near locks

For a total of 47 spots claimed or close to it.

Sorry this was long and rambling. I feel I was perhaps a bit too stingy handing out "locks" So what say you, Mafia? What did I get wrong?

I always enjoy posts like this re: personnel and roster projections. Cool that you hit the 47 number; I think Barkley sticks due to the new 3rd QB rule.

  8. First of all, its KOLB, not COLB. That's all I've got so far!

Trubisky and Kyle Allen because their style pf play is similar to Josh's.

The schedule is tough but with this roster, I think either could eke out 2 of 4 wins.

If they had to play longer than that, the league would figure them out and the season would be sunk.

Only Bills fans complain about having three corners with ability vying for a job in a passing league.  I love that we have 4 corners, including Tre, that can perform.

Especially with teams running 3 or 4 wrs

My biggest pet peeve with this front office and coaching staff is rearing its ugly head yet again this offseason.

We pick Elam with our 1st round pick last year. He is a physically gifted cover corner with great size and ball skills. When given a chance to play late last year, he was excellent against guys like Tyreek Hill and Jamar Chase, two of the best receivers in the league.

And he's in a competition for the #2 corner position... with Dane Jackson...

A couple days ago Chris Brown mentioned on One Bills Drive he may lose this competition because of... now get this... his ability to set the edge in the run game...

To me, this kind of thing is exactly why this staff can not get over the hump and win it all. This is a passing league. The defense is in a unique position to have two elite corners on either side of the field, which frees up Poyer and Hyde to make plays, allows Taron Johnson to be more aggressive in run support and gives the defensive line that extra second needed to get to the quarterback.

But we're worried about run support? From an outside corner? That's why Benford and Jackson are rotating out there? Who by the way, are typically getting torched in coverage. Dane Jackson is said to always be around the ball... okay but a yard behind the receiver while he's making a big play isn't exactly what I'd be looking for as a coach when evaluating a defensive back.

And Elam's strengths and weaknesses coming out of Florida were no mystery, this isn't something that should have come as a shock to McDermott. So why pick him there?

He is corner 1 talent level and would most likely be in that spot on a lot of other teams in this league. At some point this staff needs to get out of it's own way or they will waste the career of one of the best quarterbacks to ever step on a football field.

Calm down. Elam is still adjusting to zone coverage. As you said yourself, the CB attributes are there. And, you also said, this is a passing league. With offenses routinely using 3,4 wrs, why would the Bills trade a corner? They often take 2,3 years to develop.

So is there enough to go get a decent tackle? Sounds like that needs to be addressed somehow. Via FA with a dirtbag like Lewan if necessary, or via trade. But I’d hate to see the team stand pat and roll the dice on protecting Josh, again, after investing a quarter billion $ into him…

They signed Shell and I belive Edwards has played tackle. Do the Bills have e enough cap space to sign a "decent tackle" or can they just afford another similar to what they ready have? Probably aren't any "decent" candidates at this time but Beane could go shopping after cutdowns.

His training camp is likely ruined now.  Hopefully one of Shell/Quess/Gouraige can step up and not suck.

Maybe edwards or McGovern can play RT?  Doubtful.

😢 worst case scenario in motion

I think Edwards might have been an All American tackle. Brandon Shell has been getting lot of reps at RT

    From the article:

"Darrynton Evans then Andy Isabella got the first punts of the practice. For Kick Return it’s Harty then Evans. Evans gets a squib kick, pausing only briefly to secure it better. The next is an onside kick. No kicks into the end zone.  The Chiefs kick will echo in our heads forever and ever and ever."

Thanks, when I read the first mention of kicks, I assumed that was it.

Sucks that Hines got hurt but the Bills have numerous return candidates.  The new kickoff rule might soften the loss of Hines.

We all know McGovern will be a massive upgrade at LG.  If Torrence is legit this line could be very very good. This o would be scary with a competent ol , let alone a great 1

So far the OLine is being ranked about 21. When the season starts it would nice to see them at least mid-pack,15 or 16.
