Is Dodson deaf? Why wouldn't he be capable of wearing the helmet with the radio and lead the defense? He's a four-year veteran in this system, he competed for the starting MLB job all preseason, he's started 10 games this year. And we're supposed to believe that he can't call the defense and instead we need a guy with no athleticism left who was sitting on the couch just a couple weeks ago to be in on 98% of snaps against the defending world champs in the AFC Semifinals?

This is a very weird take you're clutching onto. The depths the McDermott excuse-makers will go...

@GunnerBill What do you disagree with? Klein was an absolute train wreck and many of us knew it was going to happen before the game started. And it happened. Many people were saying Dorian should be playing instead of Klein, including some in the media (Joe Buscaglia). This isn't a "hindsight is 20/20" situation. So what is there to disagree with?

True but the DL did have a great Year overall,  finally

They fell flat on their faces in the biggest game of the season.

The defense will be rebuilt in 2024 - specifically the DLine. This was convenient timing. I'm guessing McDermott made some calls to get him another position and will find someone with experience coaching up young DLinemen.

Dodson doesn’t wear the green dot lol. They even made a point of it because Klein exited the game when he got hurt

and they had to switch helmets.

This is what I’m talking about with the criticisms. We should have guys like Dorian Williams and Tyrel Dodson (who have no experience organizing the defense) do it  because we know the defense looked bad otherwise.

    Its nonsense.

Yeah yeah, and if Dorian Williams gets spun around on misdirection on runs like he has ALL SEASON, and Pacheco had 120 yards at half, you’d be playing Monday morning coordinator questioning the decision to put him out there when Klein led the team in tackles the week before. Dorian doesn’t even have experience with the green dot, you think he should be QBing the defense in that spot?

”anything would have been better” is not a sufficient answer. And honestly, I don’t think it’s true.

Always with the excuses for McDermott.

Who said anything about Dorian quarterbacking the defense? Dodson was playing, and he played great. Klein was a train wreck from the very first snap of the game.

Considering the Chiefs averaged 7.7 yards per play against McDermott's defense on Sunday - their highest ypp average of the season - I would say, yes, "anything would have been better". In fact, Chiefs only averaged more than 7.0 yards per play in one game out of their 17 this season. They averaged 5.6 yards per play on offense in 2023. For reference, the 49ers led the league in yards per play with 6.6. Again, Chiefs had 7.7 against the Bills on Sunday.

Once again, McDermott falls flat on his face in the playoffs.

    The man has peaked.

I don’t understand this argument that our base nickel D was getting run on, but we want less linebackers in coverage.

I guess you wanted to start out with more dime looks? Or you wanted Matakevich out there in coverage? Neither of those sound like solutions to me.

To me, the one of the biggest injuries prior to this game was Rapp. I think this game needed our big nickel 3 safety look that we had been going with occasionally. But we couldn’t, because everyone was hurt.

For Klein to receive 98% of snaps alone is absurd. Dorian Williams received SIX snaps.

They needed Dorian's athleticism. McDermott is so controlled by fear-based decision making that he would rather fail with an over-the-hill veteran with 0 athleticism left in the tank and who has no business being on an NFL football field anymore than go with a rookie who might make a mental mistake once in a while but will make up for it with superior physical talent.

Or he could've come up with a gameplan to use Siran Neal on Kelce more. Anything would have been better.

In which facets did he outcoach him? To my eye Mahomes took two deeper shots to MVS (who I am not a massive fan of) and he came up with tricky but makeable catches. Josh put three deep balls in at least as good a spot for Diggs and Sherfield x2 and they didn't come down with the ball. That and the kicking reliability was the difference in the football game much more than any coaching advantage IMO.

Talking mainly Chiefs offense (Reid) vs. Bills defense (McDermott). The difference may have simply been player execution. But Chiefs offense moved the ball at will. To put Klein on Kelce was mind-boggling. Reid also took advantage of Bills' base nickel D by putting in three tight ends on running all over them.

    Yards per Play:

    Chiefs - 7.7

    Bills - 4.7

That's a significant difference. Bills were very fortunate they were a FG attempt away from tying under 2 minutes to go.

  7. I'm fine with Tyler Dunne's articles and am glad he wrote the one earlier this season. I was a big McDermott critic in the middle of the season.

But I do think McDermott earned another season after the turnaround this team had.

Unfortunately, Andy Reid outcoached him again on Sunday. But Reid tends to do that - he is one of the all-time greats. So does McDermott have what it takes to be a Super Bowl winning coach?

If I were owner I would give him one more chance.

Sure - I mean some people are going to get unhinged with the Diggs is #1 comment but that is just Beane being smart.  Say something positive about the guy in front of the caneras - that doesn't mean you don't still go looking for someone better

Agreed. Diggs is going to be back next season no matter what, so gotta hype him up. Same goes for Bass.

    I watched Josh last night.

This is going to come out wrong and be taken to mean what I’m not intending but:

He seemed too chill about losing. He said the right things. He gave the right answers. He wasn’t happy but he seemed resigned to it. Like a beaten person.

Remember the anger on here for Mahomes’ act after the first loss. It KILLED him to lose against Josh/Bills in the end of a close game. He wasn’t supposed to lose!  Mahomes and Kelcie and Reid were NOT losing this game.

I think Josh is at the point of, What else can I do. Record breaking performances and they still beat us.

    Edit: End of season presser

I can’t stomach to watch McDermott word drool into a mic. A pox on him and his process.

There's nothing else Allen can do. Mahomes benefits from great coaches and teammates who make plays when it matters most. Allen doesn't have that benefit.

    Absolute gut punch

Short of Allen demanding we fire McDermott, I don’t ever believe these paragraphs will change

This is crap. We're already writing history when Allen is only 27 years old? Give me a break.

And Mahomes is great, but I don't think he's better than Allen. He just has better fortune. And even if Mahomes is slightly better - the team with the better QB doesn't always win.

This doesn't have to be the way it is forever. At some point Allen is going to finally lead the Bills into the Super Bowl. He'll probably be in his early 30's, not quite as big a threat with his legs but still enough of one. And it will probably be with a different coaching staff. Andy Reid will be gone and the Chiefs will be good but not a birthright to the AFC Championship game.

    It will happen.

27-24 - Josh Allen and offense 4 plays 7 yards (fake punt)

    27-24 - Defense causes fumble - touchback

27-24 - Josh Allen and offense 3 plays -2 yards

27-24 - Defense forces Chiefs punt

27-24 - Josh Allen and offense drive down the field and come away with zero points

27-24 - Defense allows first down to end the game

These 3 series are about as bad as the defense was.

So we've just decided to blame our quarterback for everything bad that happens I see.

By the 4th quarter the Chiefs defense made adjustments to stop Cook and was tackling him for losses on nearly every handoff. Allen had to be superman time after time and his teammates let him down. Sherfield can't make a play on a deep pass. And then of course this drop for what should have been a go-ahead TD with 8+ mins to go.

Allen had the ball and game in his hands and I am not saying he is not good or can't do it or anything, but he botched it as bad as Bass botched the field goal. He had the opportunity and missed. That's not on the defense, they gave us the opportunity with two huge stops at the end.

    What are you referring to?

    • Josh. I love Josh Allen. He is a special player. But for the love of god did he screw the pooch inside of 2 minutes. It’s not that I hate taking a shot at the end zone on a 2nd and long. In most situations, I am fine with it even if it doesn’t work out. But you have to know the situation here. The decision to gun it at that moment is terrible. Say it worked, that the Bills gun the ball into the endzone to take a 4 point lead under two minutes. That is 1:55 and 2 timeouts for the Chiefs to score and they had shown little issue moving up and down the field. Diggs is wide open on the crossing route for what should be an easy 1st down or a makeable 3rd. The clock keeps ticking. The Bills don’t need to hurry they have 2 timeouts and Kansas will be burning some too. Josh is a veteran at this point and while he had a good game on the whole those are the kinds of things people point too when they say that Mahomes is on another level.

If you have a sure touchdown with less than two minutes to go, you take it.

What QB in the middle of a play sees a touchdown developing and thinks "Oh well our defense sucks so forget throwing to an open WR in the end zone, I'm going to just dink and dunk here to wind the clock down and hope there's another opportunity for a touchdown later"?

It doesn't work that way. To blame Allen for that is laughable.

Maybe a weird post - but I was both excited about this game, and dreading it.  I was excited because winning would have been euphoria - but I expected losing to be completely devastating.  As it always has been for me.

I'm actually shocked that I'm in decent spirits right now.  It's nothing like previous losses in high-stakes games.  I usually can't sleep, but I think I'll sleep fine tonight.

Trying to figure it out.  Do I just expect this kind of stuff now?  Just curious if anyone else has a similar thing going on....

    Yep. I'm numb to it.

I also think this team sort of stunk all season and only reached this point because of Allen so I wasn't that surprised with a poor team performance against the defending champs.

I think a new coaching staff and overturning the roster would be the best strategy but I don't think Pegula is smart enough to do that so we'll keep seeing this happen over and over again - a team with flawed coach, mid roster and an elite QB making them relevant but always falling short in the end because you need more than just a great QB to reach the Super Bowl.

Not going to happen.  The Bills are not in a position to take 7.5 million in dead cap hits and then have to pay another player to take his place.  Stop thinking Madden franchise mode is real.  It's not.  Please come back to reality where the Bills are already $40 million over the cap and will have to work some magic to get under it and sign some key players.  Adding more holes and dead cap isn't in the cards.

I don't play video games. I just know when a kicker's skills have depreciated.

That happens to kickers all the time. Justin Tucker and Adam Vinatieri are the rarity. Shame on Beane for giving a kicker a contract like that.
