Well, I do remember the drought years quite well in fact, however, if the idea is that bad, please elaborate, or not, your choice.

You don’t think Taron Johnson is just as quick as McKenzie, not to mention him and all of our other DBs already have many years of training as professional defensive backs?

Johnson isn't as fast as McKenzie, but yeah, he is vastly more experienced, so there's that!

  2. Not a crazy idea but, I was thinking today how to minimize Hill with only using one guy, and I was thinking the fastest guy we have is McKenzie, and he has great hands.  If McKenzie could be taught to play corner in one week, seems Mahomes always throws to Hill when he is wide open, but when covered, or closely shadowed, he tends to look at other reads, and comes off Hill quickly, which if you watch the tape, trends into a hasty throw or scramble by the Chiefs signal caller.

I know some will laugh at this as McK is showing great promise on offense, but for one game, is the idea that terrible?

    Thoughts?

Kidding (I think) aside, one of the seemingly boldest offseason takes last year was from Adam Schein who had this to say about Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, which we discussed here last year in May:

I think this team is going places. And I think this aerial attack is about to explode. Buffalo GM Brandon Beane brilliantly traded for Stefon Diggs, giving Allen a legit No. 1 receiver. Those two will make beautiful music together. And don’t forget about Allen’s great chemistry with John Brown and Cole Beasley, which will only get better in their second season together.

Yeah, Schein has rubbed me the wrong way a few times, BUT, he did call this early when it wasn't popular to do so, credit due!

  4. Tua, looks good, and Flores is taking it slow, as he should, but let's not get crazy.  AZ is not a top tier defense, let's see how he does against teams that can defend the pass.

Allen, on the other hand excels at passing.  In spite of McD's tendencies, they had a great game plan yesterday.  Our strength Vs. their weakness..  Seems dumb to write that outm but the same plan should be for next week with a few wrinkles.  :)

  5. With the loss of Lawson and Phillips, apparently we lost our core and seemingly integral part of the defensive, whether by scheme or by effort.  Two biggest losses this off season.  And I know they haven't done much with their new teams, they were clearly more important than previously thought.

Just an all around stinker.. But the above holds true all season thus far.  This D is missing heart, and both those guys clearly had it!

In my opinion Beanes biggest blunder as a GM.

  6. There's no way in hell that Ole Bill didn't know what was happening.  The man is meticulous to a fault.  At this point it doesn't even matter.  31 fan bases are all talking about this, twitter is well, twitter, and the NFL and the commissioner need to be out in front of it.  They admitted it, finding out the why, the how, and the who isn't nearly as important as to the shield that Goddell so fondly speaks of.

How do you win 6 SB in 20 years.. Easy, cheat!

  7. It's not going to be a blow out for either side, both are well coached teams, disciplined, and hungry.

I think unlike in previous few weeks, McD doesn't allow the vanilla defense on the first Baltimore drive, and instead goes all in on stopping their inside run game, staying aggressive on early downs forcing LJ into passing on 2nd, 3rd down.  That I think is the plan or hope going in.  We actually match up pretty well with them on defense, and on offense I think we have the edge in running the ball off tackle with motor.  The key is getting up early, and getting inside LJ head with run blitzes and blitzes from the outside corner position.  Key, outside corner, NOT slot corner or safety.  If we blitz with any inside guys LJ and or Ingram will eat our lunch.  Why from the outside you ask?  Because, from what I've seen, and only on rare occasions where LJ has time, he almost never looks outside on his reads and his instinct is to look downfield ahead of his eyes.  This is his kryptonite, IMO.  Teams thus far, AKA the 9ers, didn't blitz much, but when they did it was double A-Gap or safeties all coming up the middle, which, I can understand as the Ravens strength is running inside, so the thought process would be to blitz on your way to the QB or RB.

I don't think this is the correct approach.  I think the safety we keep back takes on the role of cover for the blitzing DB in a well disguised scheme.  The whole idea is to make LJ act fast, but make his options limited to on side of the field by clogging up the center in some zone, and man on the opposite side of the blitzing DB.  I think if their WR line up anywhere near the LOS, this should be taught as automatics to blitz from that side closest to the OT.  Have a hand signal to the deeper safety that this is your cue to go, and make sure he's on the same page.

You can blitz the Ravens, but NOT on 1st down, and if you want some modicum of success, the Blitzer has to be coming from the outside.

If the Bills can accomplish this, we win 28 - 16.

oh, and one other thing, I'd try some DLine combinations in practice this week that have a focus on clogging up the middle allowing our LB's free to spot the rusher, or QB.  Maybe 5 linemen at times, maybe 3, keep them guessing.

    Having plan A, and a Plan B, should include a Plan C and Plan D or maybe even E, F G.  :)

    Go Bills!

  8. Wow, that was a show, but I think I got it figured out.  :)

Teams are going to have to sacrifice 5 down lineman no LB's, and the two safeties are going to have to fill the gap where the LB's should be.  That leaves you 5 D linemen with a true NT, 2 safeties up at the LOS, and 4 DB's in man.. To me, this is the way to at least try and slow the Ravens down.

But, man-o-man, Jackson is fun to watch isn't he?

Morning folks. I spent some time last night watching and re-watching the Browns and Broncos game from Sunday given that they are two of the Bills next three opponents. Here are some interesting pointers to areas where I think the Bills might want to pay special attention in those matchups.

    Browns

Make Mayfield hold the football. Baker Mayfield has always been at his best in a rhythm passing offense. When he can get the ball out of his hands quickly to his first read he is a more decisive and accurate passer. If you can take his first read away or get early pressure that takes eyes away from looking down the field and makes them look at the rush then he holds the ball and it is when he holds the ball that bad things tend to happen. He makes poor decisions, takes bad sacks and when he does throw it his accuracy drops off. The Bills early in the season were getting good push early in the middle of the pocket and changing coverages just before the snap on defense. They had to simplify some of that last week in an effort to shore up the run defense but they will need to be able to both get pressure early and disguise their coverage to confuse Baker Mayfield and force errant throws.

Give them Jarvis Landry. I know he had 160 yards when they beat the Ravens but if you are making the Browns throw to Landry a lot then defensively you are doing your job. Don't be surprised if this looks like Jamieson Crowder week one where he ends up with 100 yards off 9 or 10 catches and during the game you think "man Landry is killing us" and then you look at the scoreboard and see the Browns have fewer than 20 points. The Broncos had a plan to not let OBJ beat them and while he had one of his typically athletic catches for 27 in a critical spot in the 4th Quarter that eventually led to the Landry TD for the most part they bottled him up well. I expect Tre White to see a lot of OBJ on Sunday.

Make Duke active. I was in favour of having Duke inactive last week based on a pretty lacklustre day against the Eagles and the matchup vs the Washington secondary. However, he should play this week. My knock on Denzel Ward coming out of college was whether he was really suited outside in the NFL against bigger, stronger, more physical receivers. Physicality was a knock on Greedy Williams last year too who while 6'2 has been questioned in respect of his willingness to mix it with big guys. Now Duke Williams is most decidedly not Courtland Sutton from a talent standpoint (more on him later) but he is that bigger more physical type that Ward in particular is struggling against. This to me is what Duke is - a game plan specific weapon. He suited the way you beat the Tennessee corners and he suits the way I think the Bills should attack the Browns corners too.

Use the aggressiveness of the Cleveland Dline against them. Myles Garrett is great but he is so aggressive and gets up the field so quickly that you can expose them with bubble screens to the outside and delayed hand offs. Equally the middle of that defensive line has not proven it can hold up against the run so it should be an easier assignment inside for the Bills blockers and backs than the past two weeks against Washington and Philadelphia's defensive interiors.

    Broncos

Stop the inside zone. For as long as I have been watching football it feels like the Broncos offense has been built around the inside zone run. Take out a couple of years where they ran the Peyton Manning offense and it has been their identity basically since the Shanahan era. Hardly anyone has heard of Rich Scangarello their OC - in fact before I watched them play the Bears earlier in the season I hadn't. While watching that game I was struck by the fact that they were basically running the stretch zone and when I googled it the reason why became obvious. Scangarello's last two stops in the NFL were are as Offensive Quality Control coach in Atlanta under OC Kyle Shanahan and QB coach in San Francisco under, you guessed it, HC Kyle Shanahan. That "left inside zone" run that the Bills spent 2 and a half games getting gashed by? Well they better sell out to stop it against Denver because if not Philip Lindsay will make it a long day. The good news is I think they are pretty safe to sell out to stop the run because I am pretty confident that Brandon Allen will not be able to beat this Bills team throwing it. On paper 12/20 for 193 and a TD looks respectable for your NFL debut. On tape there were some ugly throws.

Pass on first down. Vic Fangio is one of the great NFL defensive minds. His defences have been top 5 units in 8 of the last 12 NFL seasons. But his defense is pretty traditional and is about playing the percentages and trying to force teams into third and long, obvious passing situations, and then teeing off. What I noticed was that other than one sack where they confused Mayfield and he held it and took a sack every other throw he attempted on first down in the first half was complete. I think he missed a couple in the 2nd half but at one stage he was 6/6 on first down passes. So I went back a week and looked at this. Jacoby Brissett was 8/9 on first down passes against the Broncs in week 8. It is a real thing. I know generally it is easier to complete passes on 1st down than third down right across the league but the differential against Fangio's defense really does appear stark. Pass on first down. If you are incomplete you can always try and run it on 2nd down to give you a more manageable third down but the way to expose this D is to pass on early downs.

Double Courtland Sutton. Watch out for this kid. He is one of the fastest ascending receiver talents in the NFL. I loved him in 2017 and was ready to give him a first round grade in the 2017 draft but he went back to school and I didn't quite love his 2018 tape as much and had him as a 1st/2nd borderline guy in 2018 just behind Calvin Ridley who was my WR1. I should have stuck with my 2017 evaluation. This kid is an absolute stud. I think he is better than the two receivers who went top 10 in 2017. There might be a tendency to say stick Tre White on him but his body type reminds me of the sort of WRs that have, on occasion, caused White problems in his short and excellent NFL career thus far - tall, rangy, and deceptively fast. Think Robby Anderson who has troubled him a couple of times and AJ Green who got him bad his rookie year. My approach would be sell out to stop Lindsay on the inside zone. Double Sutton and ask Allen to beat you with what is left. He won't.

Neither of these games is a gimme - both teams have some talent and have ways they can hurt you but they both have significant weaknesses too. These are games where coaching is really going to matter. If the Bills can really take away the things these teams do best and focus on exploiting their weaknesses they should be wins. But if the Bills are not prepared and let these teams do the things they do well then either could easily become the backbreaking loss that so far we have avoided this season.

Great analysis, but I would add with regard to Baker, that he tends to roll right when he feels pressure, which limits his field vision.  I think McD knows this as well, and will force Baker out of the pocket to his right, and then shorten the defense to compensate.  I've watched all the Browns game this year, and if I'm the DC, I work this into my plan on passing downs with fake pressure to Bakers left, added with real pressure early to force that uneasy feeling, and then shorten the coverage over the top.  What you'll get is a bunch of throw aways, or depending on score, ill-advised throws down the sidelines.  Baker doesn't see the field, I would argue as well as Josh Allen does at this point in their careers, but both of them are gunslingers and risk takers, albeit, Josh is getting better at this, Baker, not so much.

I agree that Landry should be the one to waste less time on.  Put White on OBJ (Another note is the media has been reporting all week that OBJ is NOT happy with his touches) and have one of the safeties roll that way each snap, keep the other in the box on running downs.  Baker, with his immaturity at this point in his career is keenly aware that his star receivers are getting twitchy, and will want to force the ball to them.  I think McD exploits this on Sunday and our D comes to play, and Josh will keep being Josh, which, for the most part has be adequate.  That said, if the Bills are up big late, I'd like to see Daboll let Josh explore his inner Farve.. ;)

The deep ball was not his strength last year - he still missed a lot of those deep throws (the stats are out there to support it if you want to look), it just SEEMS like he was good at it last year because he connected on a few to Foster later in the year. If he hits on a few of these deep balls, his stats on deep balls will look the same as last year.

It IS a problem, but its not just a "this year" thing...

  11. I like to think of myself as a reasonable Bills fan when it comes to expectations about this team, so here goes.

    1.  The defense is good, but not great, certainly not against the run, but the good news is that it can be fixed, and our coaching staff has shown that they are at least capable of making adjustments.

    2.  The offense is okay, but the play calling is just plain mind boggling at times.  Again, I'm not sure who is to blame, but my gut tells me Dabol is protecting Josh in a way that feels unnatural, but at the same time, it's hard to argue with it because we're still winning, albeit against bad teams.  Watching Lamar (By the way I was so wrong about him, and glad he's having success, I never would have picked him in the draft) and what good coaching does, and commitment to your signal caller, I hope the brain trust at OBD is paying attention.

    3.  Coaching has been adequate, but very conservative, and again, I'm not sure if this is all by-design.  I suspect that it is, but watching Josh for the last 2 years, he's got that gun-slinger mentality, but not clutch enough to put the team on his back right now to make up for the inevitable mistakes gun-slingers tend to endure.  So, I think the coaching staff is being conservative on purpose, bringing Josh along very slowly, and to some of us fans, it seems almost too slow.

    4.  Schedule - We have the imploding Browns up next and I almost feel as though the personalities on that team would have gone off by now, but, not quite yet, so I expect the Browns to give us a game on their home turf Sunday, plus the opening line gives the Browns a -2.5 slight edge??  Explain that one.. :)  I think we can be 8 - 2 heading into the Thanksgiving game at Dallas, and I like that.

    5.  Playoffs - I think we make the playoffs this year, especially if we beat Dallas.  Winning the division?  Not likely, although we hold our own fate in our hands.  Can we win a playoff game?  I don't see why not, and this seems more likely than unlikely.

    6.  The "Process" -  Well, it's working, isn't it?  Maybe not as fast as some of us would like, but McD asked us to trust him, I did, and we're 6 - 2 with a chance to go to 7 - 2 into the final stretch.  I'll take that.

    7.  Paper Tiger? - Well, as a proud Bills fan my whole life, I don't like the media shitting on us either, but they have a point.  Conversely, this is the NFL, and you have to show up and win the games.  We have, and the signature win is meaningless.  Your goal is to get better each game, and I think that objectively, we are doing that.  We're finding out who we are, but we're not there yet.  Are we a run first team, like the Ravens?  Well, no, not even close I think, but we have some parts that can get us there, assuming this is the goal of the staff?

    8.  Josh Allen - Welp, he has not been able to throw the deep ball at all this year, and that was a strength of his last year.  His accuracy, IMO is better, especially if you look at true accuracy rankings adjusting for throw aways and dropped passes.  Decision making has been ok, IMO.  He's still young and raw, but he is improving and that makes me feel as though our pick at 7 was the right one.  Comparing him to Jackson isn't fair at this point.  I think with Jackson it's highly possible that he will get injured at some point.  It's just a matter of time before some NFL defender gets pissed off that he's gashing them some badly that they go for the knees or something along those lines.  Football is an emotional sport, and emotions cause people to act on their frustrations, and I hope this does not happen, but as a team you need to keep this very real possibility in mind when you're calling those designed run plays for your QB.  I like that our coaching staff has some plays for Josh, but it's not our identity like it seems the Raven have with Lamar.

    9.  Our Fans - We have the best fans in the world, I truly believe that, but, one has to wonder about some of the roller coaster, up one minute down the next type of fans?  I don't get how some on this board are down on the team?  Every year (Barring the 90's) every game was a journey, I never felt like we should beat anyone, but this year feels different, we ARE beating the teams we should, and I expect the Bills to be ready to give any NFL a game on Sunday's.  We're not going to win them all, and sometimes the other team has a better plan, and they execute better.  This is football.  You learn from it, and move on.  I think a fair assessment of the Bills this year is that all of the above is true, and for the first time in what seems like an eternity, we have the right parts, and the right plan, and I'm happy to be thinking legitimately like we're almost there.

    Go Bills!

  12. Our D is better when you factor in the secondary.  The front 7 is a push for me, and that Dallas D held them to 7 points..  All this I am hearing about Eagles are in desperation mode is nonsense.  Every NFL team should be ready to play come Sunday's, period.  I expect McD to have this team ready and able to protect our dirt!

  16. Just heard on the radio, sorry no link, but in the Giants presser Shurmur said when asked about Allen, that when they looked at him in 2018 they thought that one day he "might" be a starter?  When pressed later on in the press conference, he repeated the statement?

What does that even mean?  Meanwhile McD had high praise for Eli.  I find it odd that usually we hear from coaches nothing but good things to say about the team they're about to face, but Shurmur's comments caught reporters off guard?
