Two Bills Drive

'In his latest mock draft for TheSportingNews.com, draft analyst Eric Galko paired Trubisky with the Bills. Normally it's just another mock draft to throw on the ever-growing pile of them, but the explanation for the Bills pick of Trubisky is what raised a few eyebrows.'

'“With experience comes a lot of different things and knowledge of different situations and being in different situations,” Yates said in a conference call with the local media on Monday. “I’ve been in all types of them, from being the backup, to being the guy, to playoff games, to when stuff’s going bad. Just try to help whoever I can as much as I can. It’s always good to have as many veteran guys on the team as possible in my opinion because the more experiences you have in the league, I think it’s better.”'

'For those who wish to believe the Bills' woeful passing game mainly resulted from an absence of great targets, there's an equally strong (if not stronger) argument that quarterback Tyrod Taylor didn't consistently get the most out of the ones at his disposal — especially tight end Charles Clay. Picking Williams or Howard would, in many ways, resemble the thinking behind moving up to land Sammy Watkins in 2014 for the sake of helping to prop up former Bills QB EJ Manuel.'

'The Rams released him in September, and he did not join another NFL team through the rest of the 2016 season. The Bills are looking for him to help provide much needed defensive-line depth, and Seau no doubt received an endorsement from new Bills defensive line coach Mike Waufle, who previously served in the same capacity with the Rams.'

'The Texans made the University of North Carolina product a fifth-round draft pick in 2011. As a rookie, he led the Texans to a 31-10 wild-card playoff victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. Yates became only the fifth rookie quarterback to win a postseason game. He had previously led the Texans to a win over the Bengals to clinch a playoff berth.'

'Former Bills receiver Marquise Goodwin also jumped into the comments, seeming to back McCoy.'

'Bills representatives held a private workout for Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer on Saturday at South Bend, Ind., and North Carolina's Mitchell Trubisky on Sunday in Chapel Hill, N.C., the Buffalo News confirmed.'

'That Davis didn't face many NFL-caliber opponents could be held against him, but the fact he consistently overwhelmed his mid-major competition makes it less relevant. So, too, is the fact he performed well against Big Ten schools. Teams have tried double- and even triple-teaming him, and he still is able to make plays. He appears to have all of the physical qualities that would allow him to either assume a No. 1 role as a rookie or move into that spot no later than his second season.'

'The Bills and Lions are meeting for the 16th consecutive preseason, and after back-to-back trips to Detroit, are hosing the Lions for the first time since 2014.'

'On Monday afternoon, the NFL released the full preseason schedule. It includes a trip back to Philadelphia, where new Bills coach Sean McDermott grew up. It also includes games against the Vikings, Ravens and Lions.'

'Kizer's mobility and arm strength will make him an appealing target to teams looking for a franchise quarterback, but he may need one season on the sidelines before he's ready to start in the NFL.'

'"Yeah, that was one thing that was expressed to me," Yates said Monday. "No matter what, there's going to be competition in the quarterback room and whoever it may be, I'm here to compete and raise the level of play in the quarterback room. Competition is something that I welcome, that I've been a part of my entire career. It makes everybody better, so the more competition the better."'

'While Yates has never exactly been a Joe Montana clone, he was a decent enough backup early in his career. It's unclear what he brings to the table heading into year seven of his NFL career. He hasn't played in a game since he tore his ACL at the end of the 2015 season, so Yates is a bit of an unknown in that regard.'

'Buffalo already has Tyrod Taylor, Cardale Jones and Josh Woodrum on their roster, but Woodrum is simply a camp body. Yates will likely get the opportunity to compete against Cardale Jones for the team's No. 2 quarterback job. Even if the veteran loses out to Jones, Buffalo may look to keep three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster.'
