‘At 40 years old, Leonhard reached a crossroads. His alma mater did not choose him. He wasn’t ready to step into another full-time role as an assistant coach for a different college football program. After one year working at Illinois for his former boss at Wisconsin, Bret Bielema, Leonhard returned to the NFL as a defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator for the Denver Broncos. His impact eventually led him back to Buffalo as the architect of a Bills defense that needed someone to take advantage of the talented players drafted in recent years.’

Four keys for the Buffalo Bills to win in Week 1 over the Houston Texans
‘The Texans had an NFL-leading 73 defensive possessions without allowing a first down in 2025. The Bills need to get first downs in Houston to stay on the field and buck the trend.’
Bills numbers to know: 4 noteworthy stats for Buffalo’s season opener in Houston
‘Dalton Kincaid being healthy is a significant advantage for the Bills. Among tight ends with at least 100 catches since 2023, Kincaid ranks fourth in target rate (23.3%), fourth in yards per route run (1.8) and third in explosive catches per route (4.2%). The Raiders’ Brock Bowers, 49ers’ George Kittle and Cardinals’ Trey McBride are the only tight ends to rank higher than Kincaid in more than one of those metrics.’
Bills-Texans: Who you got? Buffalo News writers make their Week 1 predictions
‘The biggest factor to me here is the Bills’ new defense. Without any true tape on Jim Leonhard’s updated scheme, the Texans have had to plan in the dark. While they have gone down all avenues of bread crumbs for Leonhard, the Bills hold the upper hand here.’

Bills vs. Texans: Houston seeks fifth consecutive home win over Josh Allen in 2026 season opener
‘Not only did the Texans extend their reign of dominance over the Bills the last time these teams met in Houston, but they also did so with a backup quarterback at the helm. If Stroud can be at least as effective as Davis Mills was in the 23-19 victory last November, then the blueprint exists for this to turn into a season-opening win. Buffalo surrendered eight sacks and three turnovers in that contest, and nearly the exact same offense rolls into town in 2026. New wide receiver DJ Moore cannot right that many wrongs.’
Capaccio: Bills at Texans: Sal’s keys, notes and stats
‘The last time these two teams met, Bills quarterback Josh Allen was sacked eight times, the most of any single game throughout his 143 game career, counting the playoffs. Making sure nothing close to that happens on Sunday has to be atop the Bills to-do list in this contest. The Texans have one of the best pass-rushes in the NFL with terrific personnel up front. If the Bills don’t protect Allen better than last year, it’s going to be a lot tougher to do anything on offense. If they can slow down and even stop the Texans from getting after him, it will open up a lot more of the game plan.’
Bills close to full health going into season opener
‘Sanders is the only player on the injury report listed as a starter on the Bills pregame depth chart, and he has shared snaps with fellow second year defensive lineman Landon Jackson throughout training camp and preseason. Hancock provides depth as a slot defender and safety, while Johnson is often utilized as a third down back.’
