Humble beginnings: Bills assistant coaches recall start of their journeys to NFL

‘Offensive line coach Aaron Kromer split a $24,000 salary with another assistant. Defensive backs coach John Butler was a bartender during his first year in the business. Tight ends coach Rob Boras went from attending fraternity parties with teammates to coaching them. Receivers coach Adam Henry served as a resident dorm adviser of sorts. And linebackers coach Bobby Babich and interim offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Joe Brady were late-in-the-offseason hires.’

‘The Bills have a legitimate complaint after last week’s game. The disparity in penalties in the first half was egregious, as were some of the calls that should have been made, but weren’t, against the Eagles. I’m usually slow to blame officiating, but it would be incorrect to say it didn’t have an impact on the outcome of last week’s game. I’m not surprised Sean McDermott avoided commenting publicly on the subject – he risks a fine in doing so, and nobody wants money taken out of their pocket – but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bills voiced their frustrations to the league behind the scenes. The obvious move to improve officiating would be to make them full-time employees, but this has been discussed for years and the league still hasn’t done it. Finally, no, I don’t think McGovern should have been flagged for holding on the play in question.’

Buffalo Bills remain in the playoff hunt. Who should fans be rooting for in Week 13?

‘The Texans and Broncos are both ahead of the Bills in the AFC standings. In his matchup, it would be best to root for the Texans. A loss on Sunday to Houston would drop Denver to 3-5 in the conference, the same record that Buffalo holds in the AFC. Denver, of course, would still have a head-to-head win over the Bills, but in this matchup it’s best to cheer for the Texans.’

Where do the Bills stand in the AFC playoff picture?

‘The first teams to miss the cut would be the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos, who are both 6-5 and a half-game up on the Bills in the standings. They actually play each other on Sunday afternoon, so unless there’s a tie, at least of one them will drop down to 6-6 with Buffalo.’
