National media reacts to Buffalo Bills benching Tyrod Taylor for Nathan Peterman

‘The Tyrod Taylor era appears to be over in Buffalo. Nathan Peterman will make his first career start for the Buffalo Bills this week after head coach Sean McDermott benched Taylor. Here’s a look at how the national media is reacting to the news.’

Nathan Peterman reacts to replacing Tyrod Taylor as Buffalo Bills’ quarterback

‘”You always kind of expect to have the opportunity,” Peterman said. “I knew my opportunity some time, so for this to be it, I’m trying to be ready. And I’ve tried to be ready since the first day I stepped here in this facility. Just trying to work hard this week and get ready for the Chargers.”‘

What Tyrod Taylor said about getting benched by Buffalo Bills for Nate Peterman

‘”Definitely disappointed. I don’t agree with the decision, but ultimately, coach McDermott has a vision for this team and what he believes is best for this team as well as the owners and the GM. I have to move forward and continue to be the teammate and the leader that I am from a different role.”‘

Sean McDermott explains why Buffalo Bills benched Tyrod Taylor for Nate Peterman

‘”As I continually evaluate our roster and our goal to become better, I decided to start Nate Peterman as our quarterback this week,” McDermott said. “I remain confident in Tyrod Taylor and his ability to help our football team moving forward.”‘

‘”This is about us becoming a better team,” McDermott said.’

Buffalo Bills have one of easiest remaining schedules among playoff contenders

‘Despite the tough stretch remaining, Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders lists the Bills as having one of the easiest remaining schedules among playoff contenders. In an ESPN Insider article, Schatz explained that he looked at the expected winning percentage of a perfectly average team against each playoff contender’s remaining schedule. When all was said and done, Buffalo had the fifth easiest schedule remaining.’

Bills bench Tyrod; Peterman to start vs. Chargers

‘Taylor restructured his contract on March 10, and only $1 million of his $10 million base salary for 2018 is fully guaranteed, according to ESPN. He is scheduled to receive a $6 million roster bonus on March 14, 2018.’

Peterman ready to judge himself on wins: “I expect to win every time I’m out there”

‘“I wouldn’t say I’m walking into it because I feel like I’ve been part of this team the whole season. Since I walked into this facility after I got drafted, the message has been playoff caliber. We’re going to get to the playoffs. I’ve always, I’m right there with the team. We are 5-4, and I’ve tried to do everything that I can on the other side, the behind the scenes, to get us there. Now I am going to try to do the same thing now that I’m kind of in front of the scenes,” Peterman said.’

Bills defense calls Tyrod benching a wakeup call for unit

‘“Yeah, we kind of take that on the face as well. We have to get our offense’s back, just like they’ll help us out in certain games like when we’re not playing to a high level in certain games,” defensive end Jerry Hughes said.’

Former Bills’ coach Anthony Lynn: Tyrod has not gotten an unfair deal

‘“No, I wouldn’t say that. He was in Baltimore and (Buffalo). I wouldn’t say he’s gotten an unfair deal. I wouldn’t say that at all. I think whenever he lands in the right spot he’ll make the most out of it. Sometimes players bounce around a few times before that happens,” Lynn said.’

Buffalo Bills right to give Nathan Peterman a chance

‘Maybe reality set in for McDermott. Under Taylor, the Bills are 28th in yards, 30th in passing yards and 21st in points. The Bills’ passing offense has never been the team’s strong suit with Taylor at quarterback. He has one 300-yard passing game in his career.’

Buffalo Bills coach McDermott rolling the dice by replacing Taylor with rookie Peterman

‘What makes this move so risky for McDermott isn’t just what it means on the field but what could happen off of it. Taylor has been the Bills’ starting quarterback for the last three seasons and has earned the respect of his teammates. McDermott is gambling the change won’t alienate the Bills veteran players and cause a rift in the locker room. Remembering the Rob Johnson-Doug Flutie feud of the late 1990s, that is a possibility.’

Bills benching QB Taylor for rookie worth the risk

‘Excluding the last seven minutes of garbage-time completions against a prevent defence at New York, when the Bills narrowed a 34-7 deficit, Taylor over the past two games completed 28 of 45 throws but only three went for more than 12 yards. Three.’
