'It hasn't been easy for the Bills former starter and 2013 first-round draft pick. He became the odd-man out behind Taylor and Cassel following an offseason-long competition.'

'Meeks has appeared in eight games with Bills after being selected in the fifth round of the 2013 draft. He was cut by Buffalo on Sept. 5 before being signed to the practice squad.'

'Belichick had his ends set the edges to keep Taylor in the middle of the field, while the tackles and whatever blitzers he sent came up the middle to collapse the pocket.'

'The Buffalo Bills have promoted safety Jonathan Meeks to the 53-man roster and signed QB Dustin Vaughan to the practice squad.'

'“All three of the guys played extremely well and that’s still the case,” Ryan said of the competition through camp and preseason. “But I think when you look at the bigger picture about how, not just being narrow minded for one week, but how this could affect us as a football team moving forward. I like having EJ Manuel as the number two quarterback and not the number three quarterback because: number one, he’s gonna get a lot more reps, he’s way more involved in the game plan, and I think that’s what, what I’m saying that’s what he needs. He’s got the physical tools.”'

'The most significant of the new, listed injuries was defensive end Jerry Hughes, who was a limited participant due to a wrist injury that was likely suffered against New England. Starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor was also on the injury report, but practiced in full with a chest injury.'

'With Aaron Williams’ status for Sunday’s game in doubt, the Meeks call up provides Buffalo with the necessary depth at the position.'

'“Basically how we feel about EJ Manuel was why a move like this would be made,” Ryan said Wednesday at his weekly press conference. “It wasn’t that we felt bad about Matt Cassel. I want to make sure we’re clear on that. Matt did a tremendous job here. As we went through the (quarterback competition) I think EJ Manuel really raised his game. I think he did a tremendous job when given an opportunity. He’s a big guy that’s got physical gifts. I think he’s got a chance to be a good quarterback in this league.'

'“With the success that New England had our up front guys, the talent that we have up there, that is one of the things that we have to expect and prepare for,” said LB Manny Lawson. “As far as the linebackers and the DBs are concerned we have to cover a little bit longer and little bit harder and stay closer to our man.”'
