‘The breakout performance by Holmes and the Jets offense came on a day when the Jets were whistled for 20 penalties for a franchise-record 168 yards. Repeatedly, the defense in particular shot itself in the foot when it could have forced the Bills off the field.’

‘The worst stretch came in the fourth quarter, when Jets cornerback Kyle Wilson seemed to let the taunting of Bills receiver Stevie Johnson get in his head. Wilson was penalized three times in a four-play stretch and was benched for a time as a result. Ten of New York’s penalties came in the fourth quarter, and that sloppiness was compounded by the two lost challenges Ryan tried in the third quarter. As a result, he had no challenges left when Manuel appeared to fumble the ball later in the game.’

‘Smith slightly outplayed EJ Manuel in a matchup of the first two quarterbacks selected in the NFL draft in April. But this one was tough to watch at times with the barrage of penalties. The Jets (2-1) rolled up 168 yards in penalty yardage, and nearly gave it away against the Bills (1-2).’

‘It was a costly defeat for Buffalo, which lost cornerback Leodis McKelvin to a hamstring injury and defensive tackle Marcell Dareus to an ankle injury. Defensive end Alex Carrington was carted off late in the game with an apparent left knee injury.’

‘It was uncertain when Spiller was injured, but he had just 10 carries for 9 yards when he left.’

‘Stephon Gilmore, the Bills’ top cornerback, was ruled out earlier in the week. Also inactive are guard Doug Legursky, who had been questionable while recovering from a preseason knee injury, wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, cornerback Ron Brooks, tight end Chris Gragg and kicker Dustin Hopkins.’

‘Manuel’s life was made miserable most of the day, as the Jets’ defense sacked the rookie signal-caller eight times. He completed just 19-of-42 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown, and the Bills (1-2) were forced to settle for four Dan Carpenter field goals on the day.’

‘”We were able to move the ball at times early on, but they scored touchdowns and we kicked field goals,” Marrone said.’

‘Injuries hit the Bills hard throughout the course of the game — Buffalo lost Marcell Dareus, Leodis McKelvin and CJ Spiller. Alex Carrington was carted off late in the fourth quarter.’

‘The Bills offensive line and its secondary started the season with two decent games, but the O line and Manuel combined for eight sacks against. Manuel still hasn’t mastered throwing the ball away when under pressure, but it’s only three games into his NFL career.’

‘For fans of the team, Sunday had to be rather frustrating for seeing the same mistakes made over and over. Somehow, though, the Bills were right into the game until late in the fourth quarter. They just couldn’t find the same magic as they harnessed during Week Two.’

‘At the end of the day, though, EJ Manuel took big steps back Sunday as he was consistently over-throwing his receivers, rushing passes, and misreading coverage.’

‘The Jets have won of the top defenses in the league and game plan was straight forward. Stop the run and force Manuel to beat them. The rookie couldn’t do it on Sunday. Manuel struggled with the constant pressure brought by the Jets and finished the day 19 of 42 for 243 yards and a touchdown. He missed out of bounds on several throws and was sacked 8 times.’

‘Buffalo yielded 513 yards, and it might have been worse had New York not committed a mind-boggling 20 penalties for 168 yards.’
