‘The alleged killer, Hubert Allen Jr., 72, then went to his home about a half-mile from Pritchett Trucking headquarters in Lake Butler and took his own life, the sheriff’s office said.’

‘Authorities said Allen, the step-grandfather of NFL star and Lake Butler native C.J. Spiller, killed himself as his last act of the morning.’

‘The suspected gunman in Union County was 72-year-old Hubert Allen, Jr., reportedly the step-grandfather of Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller. He killed himself after the shootings, which happened more than two hours north of Orlando.’

‘Spiller, who scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run, was aware of the grim news, Bills director of media relations Chris Jenkins said, adding inside the locker room that Spiller would not discuss questions about the incident with the media.’

‘”We’re not at full strength right now. We expect big things from Jeff,” Jackson said. “He’s handled this offense, he’s come in and made plays when he had the opportunity. Nothing to take away from him. When we go out and start scheming teams and things like that, we are very vanilla on offense, so that is something to take out of this.”‘

‘It sounds like the same old story in Buffalo, but at least this time the organization is placing its hope in a rookie quarterback with possible upside. With a bounty of youth in the passing game, it will take the offense time to figure things out. The defense has too many question marks to carry the team in the meantime.’

‘Kolb had the inside track in Buffalo’s quarterback competition after first-round pick EJ Manuel hurt his left knee in the Bills’ previous game. Manuel was ruled out for the rest of the preseason, and Kolb’s status will be in question given his history with concussions.’

‘Kolb was hurt at the end of an 8-yard scramble in the first quarter. He remained in the game for four more plays, until the drive ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by C.J. Spiller.’

‘It’s bad enough to run low on healthy quarterbacks, but the Bills have other issues, particularly in the secondary. Safety Da’Norris Searcy suffered a head injury, and cornerback Stephon Gilmore left with an injured wrist. Marrone didn’t have an update on either player. Fortunately, he’s getting back two-time Pro Bowl safety Jairus Byrd, who was on the sidelines Saturday after rejoining the team following a contentious offseason. Byrd might be a bit grumpy, though: He was hoping for a huge multiyear contract as a free agent this year, but in the end he had no choice but to sign a one-year deal after Buffalo designated him as a franchise player.’

‘The Bills are in desperate need of an experienced quarterback two weeks before they open the season against New England. Aside from Kolb, rookie first-round pick EJ Manuel has missed the past week since hurting his left knee in a 20-16 preseason win over Minnesota on Aug. 16.’
