‘”How can he control his emotions when the bullets start flying?” Whaley told USA TODAY Sports about a half-hour before kickoff. “He’s such an eager-pleaser. He wants to do so well. Sometimes, he gets too amped up. I want to see if he can go in and manage the game, manage his emotions and manage the team.”‘

‘He was solid in the short-passing game, showed he could occasionally run and even led the Bills to a touchdown in the hurry-up offense. He made some mistakes, too, like botching a handoff to C.J. Spiller.’

‘The Colts were predictably pretty vanilla on defense and had subbed out their starters on Manuel’s final drive, but the rookie showed poise and accuracy in completing all nine of his passes on the drive for 68 yards, including a 17-yard strike to tight end Dorin Dickerson for each player’s first NFL touchdown.’

‘As far as evaluating the rookie quarterback, I went into this game with the same thought I had before camp opened up and before the scrimmage last week. I want to see if Manuel looks comfortable running the offense and whether or not he shows some poise and leadership ability. As he has through most of the time at St. John Fisher, Manuel did not look like a scared rookie and managed to execute the Bills up tempo offense while minimizing mistakes.’

‘I think I like the approach for the day. They didn’t ask Manuel to throw deep with the TD his longest throw. There were dump offs and safe throws.’

‘While it wasn’t a perfect game by any means, the Buffalo Bills got some positive contributions from the youngsters that make up the team in Doug Marrone’s first year as Head Coach. The team stuck with their fast-paced look on offense and sent some pressure while playing defense. There are still areas that the team must improve upon, but for it was a solid first step for all most new faces involved.’

‘The Bills also got an impressive performance from Marquise Goodman on special teams. The rookie wide receiver had two long kickoff returns for the Bills, including a 107-yard return for a touchdown in the second quarter.’
