‘But this move, pulling the rug out two weeks into the regular season, smacks of desperation. It makes Gailey look weak and wishy-washy, and leads me to wonder if he’s even remotely as sharp an offensive mind as we’ve been led to believe. Gailey promised an open quarterback competition in training camp. He said all three candidates — Edwards, Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm — would have a chance at the starting job. It was a sham. Fitzpatrick and Brohm never got a fair shot. They never had a chance to prove themselves with the starters in preseason.’

‘Trading Lynch would make sense for the Bills because it would loosen the log jam at running back. And judging from the unimpressive showing of Brandon Jackson, perhaps the Packers would be better off with Lynch.’

‘The truth is, Fitzpatrick is hardly the answer. He’s a band-aid – what Gailey no doubt hopes will be short term fix to what’s been a long term problem. The Bills chose not to deal with the quarterback issue this offseason. That’s a decision that may prove to be the right one long term, but in the short term, they’re dealing with the reality of their inaction. It’s a reality that’s hitting home at the box office.’

‘”As I said the other day we’re always trying to look for the right combinations to get this team on the right track and headed in the right direction and we’re going to make a change at quarterback,” he said. “Ryan Fitzpatrick will start this week and he’s going to take the reins and we’ll see where that takes us.”‘

‘Fitzpatrick filled in as Buffalo’s starter last season as Edwards recovered from a concussion. The Harvard product finished with a quarterback rating of 69.7 in 10 games last season, passing for 1,422 yards with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions.’

‘Fitzpatrick will replace Trent Edwards, who has completed 29 of 52 passes this season for 241 yards and one touchdown. The Bills are 0-2.’

‘”We wanted to get Marshawn and Fred a lot more involved” Gailey said. “We didn’t put C.J. in there as much. We were going to use him (Spiller) on third down and work him in slowly as time goes on. We just felt that was the best way to attack them.”‘

‘”We can be a good football team, but we’re not right now, and we have to get there,” said coach Chan Gailey after watching his team get outclassed in every aspect.’

‘After a terrible start when they fell into a 13-0 hole, the Bills got back into the game in the second quarter and were trailing just 13-7 at the half, and had the ball to start the third quarter. However, any hopes they had of making a charge died on their fifth snap.’

‘Week after week, Trent Edwards stands up in front of the media and says that he and the Bills have to find ways to make plays, and week after week, nothing ever changes. They rarely ever make plays. Edwards was brutal again, though neither of his two interceptions was his fault, nor was the lack of protection he received. Still, he has to find a way to overcome things.’

‘"If I had the answers I would have used them during the game," Bills coach Chan Gailey said. "Obviously we don’t have those answers right now. We’re trying to find the right combination of people and schemes to get this thing right. It’s not a quick fix proposition."’

‘"It was pretty clean looks all day," Evans said. "They were trying to just be over the top with corners and run somebody underneath. But nothing really out of the ordinary or too hard to manage either way. It’s just offensively we never got into a rhythm, just never got going."’
