‘"I was coming up the field and caught the ball (in 7-on-7 red zone drills) and turned around to try and get into the end zone," Nelson said while on crutches with his right ankle taped after Tuesday’s practice. "One of the defensive players was trying to wrap me up, because it was a non-contact day."’

‘"Stup is a very solid, consistent football player," Bills coach Chan Gailey said Tuesday. "He can’t go in there and knock people off the ball. He can’t run down the field and run a 4.5 (in the 40-yard dash). But he’s a good route-runner. He’s an intelligent player. He fights every snap. He’s more than an adequate blocker. He’s done a good job so far. He’s been one of the pleasant surprises of camp."’

‘The 6-foot-5 Nelson, undrafted out of the University of Florida, has had a good camp and looks like he is going to make the 53-man roster. He has been among the top five receivers in camp, working mostly out of the slot. He was hurt when his foot twisted as he went down after catching a short pass over the middle near the goal line from rookie Levi Brown.’

‘”It doesn’t look good, but I don’t think it’s a long term (thing),” said Gailey. “The question is whether he’ll get back for the first of the season or not. It’s tough on him because he had done such a good job of working hard. He had missed some time and then made it up and had been doing a good job in that respect so I hate it for him.”‘

‘Trent Edwards remains the front-runner in the Buffalo Bills’ quarterback competition, and there’s still no telling who the top contender for the job might be.’

‘Without providing any specifics of the injury, coach Chan Gailey said, “it doesn’t look good.” Based on the initial prognosis, Gailey added that there is a question as to whether Nelson will recover in time for the Bills’ season opener against Miami on Sept. 12.’

‘"My mindset is that when a man goes down, you never want to see it, but you have to prepare yourself as if you’re next in line," Spiller said. "That’s how I did OTAs, how I did minicamps, and that’s how I’ll approach this. We had two great guys go down, so now I am the next guy in line to try to step up. Those are big shoes to try to fill, but it’s preseason. I am going to try to do my best. Fred and Marshawn do a great job of communicating with me."’

‘”He brings a positive attitude every day. I feel like he’s a good guy to have in the locker room, a good guy to have around the community, and now that he’s here, I’m excited to have him here and get him the ball.”‘

‘Already, the former Cowboys boss seems to be trying to put a positive spin on things. As big as at the Ralph? Who’s he kidding? Why, authorities in Toronto won’t even let you put a flaming hibachi grill in your trunk, roast dead animals and drink beer while throwing footballs over rows of other people’s cars in the parking lots around the Rogers Centre. Crazy!’

‘"I’d be lying to you if I said it wasn’t hard at first because I’m doing things I never had to do before," he said. "But it’s going pretty well as far as me knowing what to do and picking up the scheme."’

‘”It is training camp, but I want to be here doing whatever I can to help the team,” Jackson said. “Unfortunately I’m sidelined for a little while. I can’t do much standing on the sideline. Hopefully we can pick up where we left off when I do come back.”‘

‘”We’re still in the process of crawling before you walk, walking before you run. We’re still in the crawl … It’s a process, it’s not going to happen (overnight). If you think that the first game, you’re going to go out there and look like a million bucks … There were some positives to take out of it. If we can take the next step, that’s the goal.”‘

‘”C.J. will get the majority of the work with [the first-stringers] and he may have to go longer than that,” Gailey said. “But he missed some of training camp [during contract negotiations] and he needs as much work as can get anyway. He’s exactly what we thought we were getting.”‘

‘”It’s pretty unique. It will go in the book,” Gailey said yesterday. “When you write your memoirs, this is one of those special things you get to write about. Toronto is a great city.”‘
