Colts-Bills preview (Colts.com)

Bills sign OT Hennessey; place LB Harris on IR

‘Harris becomes the 19th Bills player placed on the season-ending list after he sustained a knee injury against Atlanta last weekend. His injury depletes a banged-up linebacking corps down to five healthy players.’

Eight Bills out for Sunday

‘Quarterback Trent Edwards and LB Bryan Scott were already declared out for Sunday’s game by interim head coach Perry Fewell earlier in the week. Joining them on the inactive list will be LB Nic Harris (knee), WR Steve Johnson (ankle), S Todd Johnson (hamstring), OT Andre Ramsey (calf), WR Josh Reed (ankle) and OT Jonathan Scott (ankle).’

Nix a solid first step

‘I haven’t talked to him extensively about what he’s looking for in a head coach. I know he’s looking for an up front leader, not a coach that is laid back. A coach that will speak his mind, but at the same time command respect. As much I like offense I have to admit I wouldn’t mind seeing a head coach with a dominant defensive personality. I’d like to see somebody that’s been in the battles and had to perform under pressure.’

Bills stay in house in picking GM

‘"The only way I could be more of a football guy is live longer, because that’s all I’ve ever done," said Nix, who turned 70 on Dec. 6. "And I’ve had all the titles except this one."’

Bills’ Nix, football have mixed for half-century

‘The new general manager of the Buffalo Bills has a wide range of experience in the sport during that time, dating back to 1961 when he served as a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama.’

News from One Bills Drive looks like same old story

‘This one has Ralph Wilson written all over it. When in doubt, the owner has often anointed the person nearest to him, rather than take a chance on someone he doesn’t know or trust. Wilson gave Tom Donahoe full power over the football operation nine years ago, and it blew up in his face.’

Many former Bills approve of selection of Nix

‘”I think he knows a player when he sees one,” Adams said. “He was a thorough scout. He investigated guys’ backgrounds well. He knows what it takes to play because he had coached at some good schools like LSU and Auburn. He had been in a league that has a lot of good players. He was a head coach.”‘

Colts’ Caldwell did best thing for team

‘They are the best team in the league from 1 to 5 on their roster, not 1 to 22 or 1 to 53. If Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis got hurt, their Super Bowl chances go down to almost nil.’

Buffalo Bills promote scout Buddy Nix to general manager

‘”I’m not the smartest guy in the room, and I’m not afraid to tell you I don’t know,” said Nix, a native of Alabama who speaks with a strong southern accent. “I’m not trying to build a resume, I’m not trying to leave a legacy. I’m just trying to help us win. Every decision that we make that I have anything to do with is to help us win a game.”‘

Maybe an old football guy can bring back old Bills

‘This was an opportunity for a bold move, to reach outside the organization for a fresh face such as Greg Gabriel of the Chicago Bears or Scott Studwell of Minnesota. But Wilson offered the re-defined general manager’s job to someone already on the payroll or that he was friends with.’

Bills name Nix new GM

‘”Something that the fans and everybody in the area and myself have wanted, and that’s a general manager of football,” Wilson, 91, said. “We really needed somebody who knew all the aspects of football … the general manager of football operations only, who has nothing to do with marketing or tickets or anything like that.”‘

Bills Look to Their Past for New General Manager

‘In promoting Nix, the Bills’ owner, Ralph Wilson, is also harking back to the franchise’s last period of sustained success. After spending 26 years as a college coach – including being Terrell Owens’s coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga when Owens was a freshman – Nix was part of the Buffalo scouting department in the 1990s, a period when the Bills went to the playoffs consistently.’

Bills Name Nix New General Manager

‘”I believe very strongly that we can get this done. I’ll be here seven days-a-week, whatever it takes. My strengths is football and personnel, and that’s what I’ll play to. I’m not the smartest guy around. I’ve never been accused of being the smartest guy in the room. I’m not trying to build a resume. I’m not trying to leave a legacy. I’m just trying to win. Every decision that we make that I have anything to do will be to help us with a game.”‘
