Browns briefs

‘The Bills were 0-4 and given up for dead. Now they are 7-6, a playoff contender that could be dangerous. “Who counted the Bills out? Shame on you if you did,” safety Lawyer Milloy said.’

Bills swarm Browns, roll to win

‘The Browns had two yards of total offense, committed three turnovers and gave up four sacks in the first half.’

McGahee goes over 100 again

‘Willis McGahee recorded his sixth 100-yard rushing game this season. Not surprisingly, the Bills have won all six.’

Offense hits new low in loss

‘But the Pats couldn’t blitz. Their secondary was too banged up to provide the necessary one-on-one coverage to make blitzes work. But that wasn’t the case with the Bills. Their secondary is talented and healthy. So Buffalo came after McCown with a series of blitzes and stunts from all angles. It knocked him for a loop physically and mentally. “It affected him. It rattled him,” Robiskie said. “And I don’t know if he recovered from it.”‘

Bills offer prolific pounding

‘”You don’t go into a game plan like that, it just happens,” said defensive coordinator Jerry Gray. “You would never say you’re going to stop an offense like that, it just happened today. We had a great effort from the guys on the field.”‘

Bills display a mean streak in rout

‘For nine weeks now, a span in which they’ve compiled a 7-2 record to climb above .500 at 7-6, the Bills have been kicking a whole bunch of rented NFL mules.’

McCown thrown to the wolves

‘It was a disaster. How about 17 net yards of offense, six first downs and a passer rating of 25.4 in Cleveland’s laughable 37-7 loss to the Bills. When Robiskie was serving as Davis’ offensive coordinator, Garcia had made some public statements about how he felt the offense was too predictable, and Robiskie didn’t like it. It almost seems as if Robiskie was trying to make a statement by not starting Garcia. If he was, the only statement he made was that he’s not cut out to be a head coach.’

New position, but same big plays from Vincent

‘”The guy’s a very bright guy,” said Bills strong safety Lawyer Milloy. “I knew he’d take to it like he had playing there all his life.”‘

Two-minute read

‘Words cannot describe how pathetic that performance was by the Browns, all the way across the board.’

Report card

‘Defensive line: This unit was possessed with Sam Adams, Pat Williams, Aaron Schobel and Chris Kelsay combining for 11 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. Adams, particularly, was nearly unstoppable against overmatched Browns’ center Jeff Faine, recording two sacks. Schobel’s sack/forced fumble against Jeff Garcia early in the fourth quarter knocked out the veteran QB. A+’

D-day for Browns

‘Whether unwilling or incapable, the Browns were not up to the physical battle. At one point early in the fourth quarter, the Cleveland offence had produced a total of minus-two yards. With no line to protect him, no running game to move the ball and no receivers capable of getting open, McCown was sacked seven times for losses of 74 yards and picked off twice.’

Buffalo may be playing for pride

‘With only two spots available, the task is tough considering as it stands now, the Ravens, Broncos and Jags would all beat the Bills in tiebreaking scenarios.’

Vincent to the rescue for Buffalo Bills

‘”It was a long eight weeks,” Vincent said. “I was the best cheerleader I could be, but I’m not a real vocal guy. I was standing on the sidelines holding five or six hats for guys. They kept saying I was good luck.”‘

Can You Believe They’re Over .500?

‘Now, Baltimore and Denver must go 1-2 while the Bills win out, making things seem as difficult as ever. Which brings us back to that unfortunate Jacksonville loss in early September, Week 1 of the NFL season. Coulda, shoulda, woulda. If only the Bills had held on!’
