Williams defends lengthy preseason

‘"We’ve got a lot of guys with some depth at positions that we haven’t had for a couple of years here and coming down to the fourth game, we don’t know enough about," Williams said. "There was a time when people thought you could do it in two games but it would be awful hard."’

Bulletin Board

‘The Buffalo Bills NFL Alumni Foundation Inc. has a full schedule of events for Sept. 6-8, including its 16th annual Celebrity Golf Tournament at Brierwood Country Club to benefit Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo and Erie County.’

Versatile Turner in mix for spot

‘” I see myself fitting in in a bunch of different places on defense and on special teams,” he said.’

Buffalo releases WR James Jett

‘Jett, who was let go by the Oakland Raiders last February, didn’t catch a pass in three pre-season games for the Bills, who signed him in early June.’

QB Brown Out Indefinitely; Bills Re-Sign Johnson

‘Meanwhile, the Bills re-signed rookie quarterback Jason Johnson, who the team had released on the final day of training camp at St. John Fisher College. "I don’t know if he had found out already that Travis (Brown) had gotten hurt but he was back in a flash and was right back in the meetings and was ready to go," said Williams. "He understands the terminology and he’ll be ready to play this week."’

Bills 3rd-string QB Brown out indefinitely

‘Coach Gregg Williams said Brown will have a pin inserted to hold the finger on his right hand in place. Williams added that it will take further evaluation to determine when Brown will be able to return.’

Bills release five, re-sign QB Johnson

‘Jett was released by Oakland last February, and signed with the Bills in June in an attempt to continue his career after spending his previous 10 seasons with the Raiders. The Bills also released third-year safety Tony Driver, second-year cornerback Ahmad Brooks, offensive guard Richard Seals and tight end Ray Thomas.’

Bills Make Roster Moves

‘In other moves, the team placed tackle Gary Byrd on Injured Reserve (knee) and has re-signed rookie quarterback Jason Johnson.’

Nine Bills Face Roster Cutdown

‘The deadline is Tuesday at 4pm, but its likely that Gregg Williams will make the moves by Monday.’

Donahoe denies Gary trade rumor

‘However, it doesn’t appear the Bills would consider trading Gary unless they could get a midround draft choice in exchange. A Gary trade also would be risky given the possibility that Henry could get hurt.’

Reese makes Bills three deep at safety

‘"I think it’s more of a rotational thing," Reese said. "They want to make sure we’re all ready to go before the season kicks off. If someone goes down, we all need to be ready and we all need to have some experience playing with the first group. It shouldn’t matter what situation it is or who they call on, the coaches have to have confidence in all of us to be able to go in and get the job done."’

Bills due to win division

‘That’s why they are the team to beat in the AFC East, provided the change in offensive styles doesn’t have that great an impact on a unit that scored points last season.’

Stamer making plays at right time

‘” That’s a difference-maker play and he’s been playing very well, not only in that situation there, but he’s been doing a good job in special teams,” coach Gregg Williams said of Stamer.’

Starting job at wideout may be Shaw’s

‘” He’s a very smart receiver in the slot,” Bledsoe said of Shaw, who played for Bills offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride in Jacksonville. ” He does a great job with his moves at the top of his routes and gets himself separation. He has a lot of experience in this offense, so he really understands where we need him to be.”‘

More Than Exhibition For Fletcher

‘”It was a little weird, Fletcher said following Buffalo’s 28-24 victory. “I finally got an opportunity to hit those guys for real, a lot of those offensive stars they have. I missed my only opportunity to get (quarterback) Kurt (Warner) real good, but other than that I got some good hits on the other guys.”‘
