Buffalo Bills News - November 17, 2002

Marker Franchise player [9:23 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I think maybe if somebody else had come in, some of the free-agent guys that were out there, I would have been in a situation to compete," Van Pelt said this past week. "But anytime you can get a guy like Drew in on your team, you're only doing great things for your team. When that happened, yeah, I was a little disappointed obviously, but, more so than anything else, excited about working with him and what he's going to bring to the team."'

Marker Bills point to winning, not scoring [6:02 AM]
D and C reports: '“I don’t remember seeing it this competitive,” veteran Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said. “I don’t call it parity ... I just call it tough football teams.”'

Marker Q&A with Phil Crosby [6:01 AM]
D and C reports: '[Q:] What’s the key to the perfect block? [A:] ’’The key to a perfect block is leg drive and execution. You need good pad level and leverage. It’s just good fundamentals.’’'

Marker Super schedule awaits Bills in '03 [6:00 AM]
D and C reports: 'The current Buffalo Bills remain in contention for a playoff berth but a relatively easy 2003 schedule could help the improving team become a legitimate Super Bowl contender next season.'

Marker Rested Bills ready for second half [5:59 AM]
Olean Times Herald reports: '“I talked to Jim Kelly the other day and he talked about even in (Buffalo’s) Super Bowl years there would be one or two games that they would get their butts kicked,” quarterback Drew Bledsoe admitted of the Bills’ Hall of Fame QB. “That happened to us, and I think the bye week came at a good time.”'

Marker Bills pray they can stop Priest [5:58 AM]
Toronto Sun reports: '"I think he's arguably playing as well as any offensive player in the NFL right now," Bills coach Gregg Williams said earlier this week. "And if you're not willing to make sure you're committed to stopping Priest Holmes, he's been able to take it to the teams that haven't."'

Marker Chiefs, Bills look for offensive feast [5:57 AM]
Kansas City Star reports: 'But the Bills have slumped. Their last three games have been their lowest-scoring of the season."We've had some opportunities, and we just haven't capitalized on them in the same way that we had earlier in the season," Bledsoe said. "The (open date) came at a good time for us because we could go back and polish up some things. I would anticipate that production would pick back up for us here soon."'

Marker Buffalo a perfect fit for Bledsoe [5:56 AM]
Kansas City Star reports: '"There are some good wings right around the corner here at a place called the Big Tree," Bledsoe said. "Most of the country, you go and order wings and you have to order 'em extra hot to get 'em to where they burn a little bit. Around here, all you have to do is order 'em regular and they are plenty hot."'

Marker Green, Chiefs must not forget about the long ball [5:55 AM]
Kansas City Star reports: 'Aside from a 49-yard screen pass to Holmes against Oakland, Green has not hit a pass play longer than 27 yards in the last two games.'

Marker What's wrong with Morton? Maybe nothing [5:54 AM]
Kansas City Star reports: 'The Chiefs are wondering about Morton, too. They invested a $5.5 million signing bonus for, through nine games, 16 catches and one touchdown?'

Marker Chiefs could use more vocal leadership [5:53 AM]
Kansas City Star reports: 'The Chiefs need a lightning rod, a personality that riles up the team and the fan base. Yes, the team got out of control a few years ago when Marty Schottenheimer recruited 25 percent of the team from a halfway house. Dick Vermeil has done a nice job cleaning up Marty's mess and reshaping the image of the Chiefs. But this team is too nice and too humble.'

Marker Chiefs have toughest schedule in the NFL [5:52 AM]
Kansas City Star reports: 'Chiefs' opponents have a combined 46-35 record -- the last four opponents alone are a combined 30-12.'

Marker Chiefs must put heat on Bledsoe [5:51 AM]
Topeka Capital Journal reports: '"We've got to get to him and not allow him the time to pick you apart the way he can do," said Hicks, Kansas City's sack leader with five of the team's 15. "We have to get after him and take some of the pressure off our secondary."'

Marker Defenses holding back Gonzalez [5:50 AM]
Topeka Capital Journal reports: '"People hold him -- tackle him! -- so much. I've seen him spun around 360 degrees to get into the route and it's not called."'

Marker Sedgwick native has Pro Bowl credentials [5:49 AM]
Wichita Eagle reports: 'But when the Bills' offense stalls, it turns to a Sedgwick native, Larry and Jeannie Moorman's son, to punt. And like Bledsoe, Moulds, Price and Henry, Brian Moorman is having a Pro Bowl-caliber season.'

Marker Can the Chiefs defense continue its solid play against Bledsoe and the Bills? [10:25 PM]
ESPN reports: The Bills' offense, particulary its second-ranked passing attack, will be a huge test for the Chiefs, who are still last in the NFL in total defense. After holding Oakland to 10 points and San Francisco to 17, the Chiefs' success this week will be based more on execution rather than doing anything fancy.

Drew Bledsoe is surrounded by quality personnel, with Eric Moulds, Peerless Price, Josh Reed and Larry Centers. Facing a multitude of talent is more of a problem for the Chiefs than the Bills' scheme. The Bills have more than one or two players to throw to. The Chiefs will have to play a balanced style of defense. If they get too focused on one or two players, the Bills have three others who can burn them.

Marker O'Shei's Three Keys to the Game [6:30 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: In the NFL, once one team finds a strategy that works against a tough opponent, other teams will try it, too. So if the Bills do happen to face a zone defense designed to limit Bledsoe to short passes, they'll have to rely on quick passes and steady running. Against the Patriots, Bledsoe threw for 300-plus yards, but the Bills' ground game was virtually grounded. Thus, Buffalo managed only seven points.

Marker Week 11: Bills vs. Chiefs Preview [1:56 PM]
Bills Daily reports: This is an interesting matchup as both teams are hungry for the win. The Chiefs are in danger of falling out of the playoff picture despite being better than their record indicates. The Bills should be real focused for a solid performance as they have had two weeks to sit and stew over what happened against New England. The Bills have never played real well in Arrowhead despite a win there two years ago. Despite the struggles in Kansas City, this team is a good road team and very hungry for a win. The two porous defenses will allow a lot of points:
Bills 34, Chiefs 31

Marker Holmes turns into heavenly pickup for Chiefs [9:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The 29-year-old back leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage, averaging 150 a game. He's on pace to finish with 2,405 yards, which would be the second-best season ever, behind only Marshall Faulk's total of 2,429 in 1999.'

Marker Bills' job to stop Chiefs' potent offense [6:00 AM]
D and C reports: 'Running back Priest Holmes leads the NFL in yards gained from scrimmage (1,353, including 908 rushing), Tony Gonzalez is the best tight end in the game, quarterback Trent Green is an efficient passer, Johnnie Morton and Eddie Kennison are productive receivers, and Will Shields, John Tait and Willie Roaf lead one of the finest offensive lines in the league.'

Marker Pressuring Bledsoe will be key for Chiefs [5:55 AM]
Kansas City Star reports: 'New England used a zone to cut off downfield opportunities to Moulds and Price and forced Bledsoe to take the short stuff. The Bills ended up with 331 yards of offense but scored only seven points because they couldn't hit any big passing plays, then bogged down in the red zone.'

Marker Playoff implications abound [5:54 AM]
Kansas City Star reports: 'By beating the Bills, the Chiefs would have a victory, and therefore the tie-breaking edge, against three of the four AFC East teams. The East and West divisions could easily supply both of the AFC's wild-card teams.'

Marker Hulk Hogan predictions [5:54 PM]
USA Today reports: Buffalo at Kansas City, 1 p.m.

Two high-scoring offenses. Their defenses are pretty offensive, too.

Hulk: The crowd will dictate this one. The better team doesn't win. Chiefs 31-30.

Marker Bills After the Bye [5:52 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: Since bye weeks were introduced in 1990, the Bills are 10-3 in games following the open date. Only Minnesota (11-3) has more post-bye week wins than the Bills.

Marker Bills vs. Chiefs Fantasy Matchup [3:28 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: Expect offensive fireworks from two of the NFL's highest scoring clubs. The Chiefs are coming off a disappointing road loss to San Francisco. The Bills had the week off and used the extra time to get healthy on the defensive side of the ball, which will serve as a blessing against Kansas City.

Marker Bills - Chiefs Series History [3:27 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: The Bills hold a 20-15-1 overall lead (18-14-1 in the regular season) against the Chiefs in a series that dates back to 1960. These two teams were members of the original six-team American Football League, with the Chiefs franchise originally located in Dallas.

Marker Game Preview: Bills Take On Chiefs [3:27 PM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: The Bills return from last week's open date to find themselves tied atop the AFC East with Miami and New England and a game in front of the 4-5 Jets. Buffalo (5-4) watched the Dolphins drop to 5-4 with a 13-10 loss at the Jets while the Patriots moved to 5-4 with a dramatic 33-30 comeback win at Chicago.

Marker Buffalo Bills Kids Club Birthdays [10:05 AM]
BuffaloBills.com reports: The Bills would like to wish a Happy Birthday to the following Buffalo Bills Kids Club members: Stephen Meagher (Nov. 15), Jake Caplan (Nov. 15), Kiley Shannon (Nov. 16), Philip Limbeck (Nov. 17), Jake Lawton (Nov. 17), Douglas Tay (Nov. 18), Stewart Bovi (Nov. 18)...

Marker Bills, Chiefs are armed for a shootout [9:06 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Chiefs have the lowest-ranked defense in the NFL.'

Marker In race thistight, tiebreakers don't favor Bills [9:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Despite a 5-4 record and a piece of first place in the AFC East, the Bills' 2-4 conference record is the worst of the 14 contenders, matched only by Jacksonville.'
