Buffalo Bills News - November 10, 2004

Marker Bills Head Coach Mike Mularkey Conference Call [4:16 PM] reports: 'Q: Is your team mentally strong enough to come into New England and deal with different types of adversity?
MM: We are going to find out.'

Marker Bills' Willis McGahee Conference Call [4:15 PM] reports: 'Q: What was the locker room like when Drew Bledsoe was taking so many shots from the public?
WM: There was total support for him. I really don't get into the newspapers and get into all of that hype. They don't know what it takes to go out there and do his job. I don't think anyone of them can come up there and try to throw the ball, make the correct reads and call the right plays in certain situations.'

Marker Bill Belichick Press Conference [4:13 PM] reports: 'Q: What is McGahee doing that maybe [Travis] Henry wasn't doing?
BB: They are both really good backs. I don't think there is anything wrong with Henry. He is one of the best running backs in the league. McGahee has come in there and run hard. He has good speed. I think they both have similar styles. They break a lot of tackles. They can both get outside. They can both run with power inside. They are both good backs. They both catch the ball as outlet receivers. They have [Lee] Evans, [Josh] Reed and [Eric] Moulds to kind of go deep and run the vertical patterns. Then, if you drop off and cover those, they can drop the ball off underneath. Drew [Bledsoe] has done a good job of that. They have been able to be productive in the passing game as well.'

Marker Sunday Night Gives Bills Chance to Shine [12:22 PM] reports: 'The only team that has been better than the Bills over the past month is the Pittsburgh Steelers at 4-0.'

Marker Turning Point For The Bills [12:22 PM] reports: If you’ve been waiting for the Bills to put together a complete game, solid in all phases, you had to be happy with the performance they put in against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Marker Bills fans take glee from Miami woes [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills are promising, the Dolphins putrid.'

Marker Bills vs. Patriots Preview [8:51 AM] reports: The Bills have gained momentum and are on the upswing with three wins in their last four games. All those wins have happened at home, they will see how far they've come with a tough road prime time matchup in New England.

Marker Braxton, Bills Move the Chains [7:21 AM] reports: 'Hall of Fame guard Joe DeLamielleure feels that the Bills’ success at moving the chains can be summed up with five words. "Good technique and great knowledge," he said. "In today’s football, I find great technology and no technique. They have all the computers and all this and they have 1,000 formations and they run 100 plays. But they don’t perfect any of them. We ran five or six plays, maximum, and ran them to perfection. It didn’t matter who they put in there, they knew it was coming and we blocked them."'

Marker The Questions: With Takeo Spikes, Bills Linebacker [9:35 PM]
CNN/SI reports: 'Most treasured possession?
A picture of me and my father taken after a game in '99. He passed away in 2001, and I take the photo with me when I go on the road.'

Marker Bills re-sign WR Haddad to practice squad [5:22 PM]
AP reports: 'The move came after the University at Buffalo product had cleared waivers. After opening the season on the Bills practice squad, Haddad was promoted to the active roster last month and appeared in one game.'

Marker Bills Sign Haddad to Practice Squad [5:06 PM] reports: 'The Bills announced today that the team has signed WR Drew Haddad to its practice squad.'

Marker HS Football "Coach of the Week" - Week 10 [5:05 PM] reports: 'Coach Jay Sirianni of Southwestern Central High School has been named the Buffalo Bills high school football “Coach of the Week” for the tenth weekend of the 2004 season (November 6-7).'

Marker Patriots vs. Bills Pre-Game Notes [5:02 PM] reports: 'Bill Belichick holds a 7-3 career record against Buffalo, including a 7-2 record as head coach of the Patriots.'

Marker Bills stampede into Foxborough to take on the Patriots [5:00 PM] reports: 'The Patriots have recorded a 19-3 (.864) all-time record at Gillette Stadium, including regular-season and postseason games. New England has won 15 consecutive regular-season and postseason contests at home, compiling the longest current home winning streak in the NFL.'

Marker Things Starting to Come Together [3:06 PM] reports: 'Drew Bledsoe had great pocket awareness this week. His performance really stood out to me. I thought he scrambled well and ducked around the pass rush. He was able to buy himself some more time and get the ball into the hand of his receivers. He wasn't doing that so much in the beginning of the season but he's really started to come on strong these past few games. I liked how he saw that he had room to run on some of the plays and he took it. That was something I haven't seen him do much in the past, but very impressive nonetheless.'

Marker An unbelievable column, plus guest speakers give the halftime tirade [3:06 PM] reports: The Bills handed off to Greer on a reverse, and the gentlemen was swarmed under by Jets defenders, who dropped him for a loss: He might as well have handed out cards that said, "I have come in to run a trick play."

Marker Bills rolling but not away from home [11:52 AM]
Niagara Gazette reports: 'I’m not totally convinced the Bills are contenders instead of pretenders at this point — but one way to win me over is simple: win on the road. Sunday would be a good start down that road.'

Marker Run atop luxury boxes ends in fall and arrest [8:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'A 22-year-old Rochester man who attempted to run most of the way around Ralph Wilson Stadium on top of the luxury boxes during Sunday's Bills-Jets game fell down into the lower bowl and was arrested later on three misdemeanor charges, authorities said Monday.'

Marker Return of Milloy a big boost [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I'm just happy to have an opportunity to contribute in whatever fashion I can," Milloy said. "I'm not a savior or anything like that, but I definitely believed I had what it took to help the team."'

Marker Mularkey has Bills progressing [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'There's no doubt Mularkey is still carving out his coaching identity, defining his style. Eight games into his career, I'd give him a B.'

Marker Mike Williams waits on tests [8:51 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Mularkey did not indicate if Williams would be able to play Sunday night at New England.'

Marker Confident Bills face a huge hurdle: Beat Patriots on road [5:02 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Thanks to the not-so-friendly schedule maker, Buffalo plays five of its final eight games on the road starting with a rematch against the AFC East Division-leading New England Patriots (7-1) Sunday night in Foxboro, Mass. This game could very well determine the Bills' playoff fate.'

Marker Can McGahee make difference vs. Pats? [5:01 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Well, you said it all very well, partner. But I'm not sure even that complete team effort you're referencing will be good enough to beat Tom Brady and his fellow Super Bowl champions. Remember, the only game the Patriots have lost was on the road against what is probably the best team in football right now, Pittsburgh. And in that game, they didn't have Corey Dillon. Sunday, Dillon will be back, and the Patriots will be at home. That's an awfully tough mountain for the Bills to climb.'

Marker We'll take Bills to block [5:00 AM]
Toronto Sun reports: 'Who do these guys think they are, the Pittsburgh Steelers?'

Marker Bills' 'Smash Mouth' may be smashing success [4:59 AM]
WGRZ-TV reports: 'McGahee has three starts, and the Bills are 3-0 in those starts, with the former Miami U star rushing for over 100 yards in each game. It’s not the only reason the Bills won those three games; the defense is playing better and the special teams have been superb. But it’s pretty obvious how the emergence of #21 changes things.'

Marker Mid-Term Grades [4:58 AM]
WIVB-TV reports: 'This team is steadily improving, and there is renewed hope for the second half of the season. The best way to raise the grade, and keep hope alive is for the Bills to prove they can win on the road. There’s no better place to start than on the road, in primetime, against the Defending Champs.'

Marker Inside slant [4:57 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'For the season, the explosive McGahee has 11 runs of 10 or more yards and six of 15 yards or longer. What's he think of topping 100 yards in each of his three starts so far? "God's on my side on that situation," he said. "And thanks to the 0-line, because they have faith in me and I try to make them look good."'

Marker Strategy and personnel [4:56 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'Coach Mike Mularkey's three wins so far have been of the "smashmouth" variety and this effort was textbook. Any team that can run 46 times on one of the NFL's better defenses will win a lot of games.'
