Buffalo Bills News - August 1, 2005

Marker Clements ready to turn the corner [8:51 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I feel that I am the best," he said after the Buffalo Bills completed Day Two of training camp Sunday at St. John Fisher. "The film doesn't lie. The numbers don't lie either. I put up numbers every year. I'm versatile, I return punts as well as play special teams and I'm durable. I would put myself up against anybody in the league."'

Marker The billboard [8:50 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Bills owner Ralph Wilson made an appearance at camp Sunday. Practice was halted briefly as the players gathered at midfield to listen to Wilson address the team.'

Marker Inside slant [7:40 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Holcomb, the former Cleveland Browns starter, was signed as insurance behind Losman and Matthews, a 12-year veteran, was also brought back. It was a signal that Buffalo's coaching staff knows there's reward and risk when counting on a mobile QB like Losman to make plays. His teammates and coaches, though, said it would be an injustice if Losman can't stay healthy and show what he can do on the field. No player on the Bills worked harder in the off-season.'

Marker Strategy and personnel [7:39 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'WR Josh Reed vs. WR Roscoe Parrish for number three receiver - This key contest will heat up heading into the Green Bay scrimmage. Parrish, the Bills' top pick out of Miami, has been impressive and there's no question Reed is hearing footsteps. In the team's first practice, Reed dropped two passes right in his hands.'

Marker Notes, quotes [7:38 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Players show up for camp with personal effects like TV sets, video games and fans. What did DT Lauvale Sape bring with him? A ukulele. Before checking into his dorm, the native of American Samoa played a few notes and sang for reporters. Is American Idol in his future? "Oh no, I hope not."'

Marker Reed focused on making big plays again [5:03 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"I've had three rough seasons, but the thing that kept me going was my teammates and my coaches. They believe in me, and like I said, I'm starting to get back to my old self," said Reed after Sunday's lone practice at St. John Fisher College. "I know what got me here. I'm not going to go out there and try and do too much. I'm going to go out and just do what I can; that's it."'

Marker Mularkey wants Losman to stay under control [5:02 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"I think that's just him, and I don't want him to be anything else but himself," Mularkey said. "But he's got to realize all eyes are on him. He's such a competitor, and he's never satisfied. Even though some of these throws are good, they're not good enough for him. I don't mind that but he can't show his frustrations all the time. I think his teammates see that, and it can be a negative for the team."'

Marker Bills OT Mike Williams Day To Day [5:01 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'As expected much of the spotlight was focused on Bills starting quarterback J.P. Losman. Losman has been working on keeping his emotions in check when a play doesn't go his way. Coach Mularkey has emphasized how important this is to Losman because he says it could negatively affect the team if Losman cannot control his emotions. J.P. looks to have improved from last year and is gaining comfort in the pocket. He also says that Bills rookie Roscoe Parrish has been a great target for him thus far.'

Marker Tight Ends Return [5:00 AM] reports: '"I was just happy to come out here with my teammates," says Campbell. "This is the dog days of camp. To be able to come out here and work with those guys, it feels great to be back. It's really exciting for me." His recovery was expected to take at least a year, but Campbell returned ahead of schedule. "There wasn't any goals,' he said. "I just wanted to come back and play."'

Marker Kids picnic at Bills Camp lifts spirits [4:59 AM]
WROC-TV reports: 'Many special children spent a sunny afternoon with thier NFL heroes, the Buffalo Bills. The Crestwood Children's Center held their annual picnic at training camp today.'

Marker Intensity Up a Notch [4:58 AM]
Buffalo reports: '"Last night, offensively, was a much better practice but the defense bounced back today like they always do and gave us a little bit more challenge" said Losman. "It was tough but still offensively we had a great day and defensively we had a great day and special teams finished up strong with the conditioning at the end."'

Marker Edwards is happy about returning to starting role with Bills [9:03 PM]
AP reports: '"Being here a number of years and having a little bit of experience helped," Edwards said of his push for the starting job. "Knowing the game and sitting behind and being around players like Sam Adams and Pat Williams helped too."'

Marker Parrish Quick to Impress at Bills Camp [8:21 PM] reports: '"Roscoe's made some big plays," Losman said following Sunday's practice. "His speed and quickness is definitely showing through."'

Marker Bills OL Tucker out with sore back [8:18 PM]
AP reports: 'Tucker had back surgery this offseason, but was hoping to be ready for camp to compete for a starting job at left guard or tackle. "He's frustrated with it, he understands that (he's missing time), so he's doing everything he can to be back out there," Mularkey said.'

Marker Transcript: QB J.P. Losman [4:13 PM] reports: 'On feeling more prepared entering into this training camp:
"It's huge. I was talking to Sam (Wyche) as we were walking out here, I said it's a lot different walking out here this year, as opposed to last year, just the feeling is different. I feel like it's my turn, my time to come out here and be successful, as opposed to taking a back seat like last year so it's definitely a big deal. I feel like I'm the guy. I feel like it's going to get done."'

Marker A Closer Look: Lionel Gates [4:12 PM] reports: 'What is your favorite restaurant to Buffalo Wings?
"Actually, I haven't had a chance to go out and have the real Buffalo Wings, all I have had is Pizza Hut. That's not the real thing, but it's the closest I have had to it."'

Marker Training Camp Photos [9:24 AM]
The Stadium Wall reports: macnmotion from the Stadium Wall has posted some incredible shots from camp. Read the full thread here: Camp Photos Thread

Marker McGahee arrives ready to roll [8:57 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I think I'm excited for him just to see him come in here and not have to wonder if he's healthy, should we pace him," Mularkey said. "It's full-speed ahead, and I think that's good for all of us on offense."'

Marker Evans strives to keep his promises on and off the field [8:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'That's the beauty of the Bills' receiving corps. Where, exactly, should the opposing defense place its emphasis? Moulds caught 88 passes last season, the third-highest total of his career. Parrish has a game breaker's quickness. Willis McGahee is a danger coming out of the backfield. Toss in a seasoned Evans, and it's a group threatening to take a lot of teams to school.'

Marker Miami partisans get carried away [8:56 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'In Miami's two losses to Buffalo last year it was largely a matter of the Bills' defense recording seven takeaways in those games. When the Bills won in Buffalo, mobile Jay Fiedler, now a Jet, was sacked five times. Fiedler and Feeley were sacked 52 times last season. To help cut down that number, Saban hired one of the NFL's better offensive line coaches, Hudson Houck.'

Marker The billboard [8:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills will hold one practice today at 2:45 p.m.'

Marker Gandy is feeling dandy with Buffalo Bills [5:08 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"I understand the importance of the position and what it takes to succeed at this level," he said, walking off the field after an autograph session. "I know it's a big responsibility but it's a challenge I'm taking in full stride. I have confidence in myself and that's all I can ask for."'

Marker Parrish takes runs with Bills' first unit [5:07 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Parrish is wearing No. 11, worn last by departed quarterback Drew Bledsoe. Why 11? "I wanted No. 1, but I couldn't have it, and this was close," Parrish said.'

Marker McGahee the key to Bills' success [5:06 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'He feels better mentally and emotionally, too. With Henry traded to Tennessee, the distractions have been removed. McGahee knows he is THE man, THE featured back.'

Marker Pundits predict Bills to finish in middle of AFC East pack [5:05 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'The Bills are picked to finish second in the division by three publications, third by six and fourth by one.'

Marker Bills fans carry high hopes team will end 5-year playoff drought [5:04 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"My husband and I have two full houses decorated with Bills stuff and we can't help but be excited for this season."'

Marker Yep, we're ready for football [5:03 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'They rolled out the red carpet Saturday for the Buffalo Bills. Literally.'

Marker Training camp begins on an upbeat note [5:02 AM]
Niagara Gazette reports: '"It seems last year the way to get those games behind you is to play the next week, but there was no next week,” Vincent said. “We were so close, but so far away. But that was the ‘04 season and that’s behind us, this is 2005 and we have another opportunity."'

Marker Sold that QB's a Bill of good? [5:01 AM]
Boston Globe reports: '''The question is, is he ready?" said one AFC personnel man. ''I guess they believe that if Losman can make a play or two a game, he's worth the risk. Maybe he can give them more production in the red zone because he can move around and make something happen. They didn't ask Bledsoe to do much last year. Basically, it was a running offense with very little passing. I think they'll be conservative at first but if the kid shows he's comfortable out there, they'll turn him loose. He doesn't have a shortage of confidence and he can make every throw and make it on the run."'

Marker Drills, Bills part of Packers Family Night frills [5:00 AM]
Green Bay Press Gazette reports: 'Gates to the stadium open at 4 p.m. and on-field entertainment begins at 5:30 with the Oneida Nation Dancers and mascot games. The Packers and Bills will take to the field at 6 p.m. and run through various practice drills before kicking off the scrimmage around 7 p.m. A fireworks show will conclude the night.'
