Buffalo Bills News - October 14, 2002

Marker 5th Down: A 15-Year Flashback? [2:57 PM] reports: More than once, I’ve heard people compare this Buffalo team with the Bills of 1987. There are some obvious similarities: Marv Levy was hired midway through the 1986 season, and began installing his own assistant coaches in 1987. One of those was offensive mastermind Ted Marchibroda, who designed the Bills’ no-huddle attack. You can fairly compare that to Gregg Williams coming to Buffalo in 2001 and, after a subpar season, installing Kevin Gilbride as offensive coordinator

Marker Texans flagged for loss [1:20 PM]

Marker All the wrong moves [1:15 PM]
Austin American Statesman reports: 'The Texans were penalized 11 times for 75 yards, but Buffalo was tagged 13 times for 128 yards. The ones on Houston hurt more. "We just beat ourselves," strong safety Erik Brown said. "Call it excitement or emotion, it got the best of us."'

Marker Game Notebook vs. Houston Texans [1:02 PM] reports: Through six games in 2002, the Bills have had seven 100-yard receiving games from three different receivers - three each from Eric Moulds and Peerless Price and one from Josh Reed. The most the team has ever had in one season was 11 in 1991, accomplished by four different receivers - Andre Reed (4), James Lofton (4), Thurman Thomas (2), and Don Beebe (1).

Marker Closest fight [11:44 AM]
Beaumont Enterprise reports: 'The Bills actually had more penalties than the Texans, racking up 128 yards on 13 penalties, to 11 penalties for 75 yards for the Texans. But the Bills were able to play their way out of their mistakes and the Texans weren’t.'

Marker High School Coach Of The Week - Week 6 [11:08 AM] reports: Head coach Tom Goddard of Clarence High School has been named the Buffalo Bills' high school football "Coach of the Week" for the sixth weekend of the 2002 season (Oct. 11-12). Marker Bills avoid a Texas misstep [9:08 AM]

Marker Williams' leg injury worries Bills [9:08 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Coach Gregg Williams called it a strained muscle, but won't know for sure until the rookie has a magnetic resonance imaging examination today.'

Marker Texans' Foreman gives aid and comfort to enemy [9:07 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I take full responsibility," said a very somber Foreman. "It was a selfish display on my part. I'm not that type of player, not that type of person. There was a lot of pressure on me this week. I just did something I never ever have done before, and probably never ever will do again." Except that he did, on the very next play.'

Marker Bills make run toward balance [9:06 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Yes, it was pretty bad out there for a while. But give the Bills credit. They kept plugging away. They maintained their poise in the midst of all the chaos. The coaches made the proper adjustments in the second half and the players executed them.'

Marker Defense isn't half bad after early struggles [9:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'But after allowing 258 net yards in the first half, Buffalo's defense held the NFL's lowest-ranked offense to 80 yards the rest of the day.'

Marker Monday billboard [9:05 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'A big reality check comes next week when the Bills travel to play their most hated rival, Miami. A win down there against one of the league's top teams and then you can start taking the Bills seriously as a potential playoff team.'

Marker All For Kicks: The Bills and Dunlop Team Up [8:48 AM] reports: The folks at Roswell Park Cancer Institute will be paying extra attention to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoons this season. They will be listening for key phrases from the play-by-play announcers. Phrases like, "it's up and it's good" or "the punt sails inside the 20."

Marker Defense takes a stand [5:38 AM]
D and C reports: '“I think that probably was the best overall half of football we’ve played,” said linebacker London Fletcher, who led a unit that limited Houston to 80 yards net in the second half including just 18 passing by Carr.'

Marker Bills: Watson, Henry play over errors [5:37 AM]
D and C reports: 'During the first half Watson looked like he couldn’t have covered a wall, even if he was wallpaper.'

Marker Bills Report Card [5:36 AM]
D and C reports: 'A nice if not ugly win for Gregg Williams. The Bills fought, overcoming a season-high 13 penalties for a critical win to get back to .500. A commitment to run by Kevin Gilbride paid dividends and Jerry Gray’s defensive tinkering at halftime paid off as well.'

Marker Texans lose close one to high-powered Bills [5:35 AM]
Houston Chronicle reports: 'Lost in the defeat was the Texans' best offensive performance of the year. The Texans established season-highs for points (24), total yards (338), first downs (18), passing yards (197) and rushing yards (141).'

Marker Overdue Bill [5:34 AM]

Marker Commander Travis leads charge for Buffalo [5:34 AM]
Houston Chronicle reports: '"The Texans came in and decided `Hey, we're not gonna let you guys beat us with your two receivers,' " Bledsoe said. "They did a very good job of taking away some of our passing game. But if teams are going to commit that many guys to our passing game, we've got to be able to run the ball. Travis did an outstanding job for us today."'

Marker Jump-Started [5:33 AM]
Houston Chronicle reports: 'The Texans had 258 yards total offense, more than their season average, in the first half compared with the Bills' 181.'

Marker Carr likes his job, and it shows [5:32 AM]
Houston Chronicle reports: 'Drew Bledsoe he wasn't, certainly not in the end. Bledsoe trumped him in most of the individual statistical categories and, more importantly, on the scoreboard, picking the Texans' defense to pieces in the Bills' 21-point second half. But D.C. was pretty good, spending much of his work day outperforming a fellow who started in a Super Bowl before he graduated from high school.'

Marker Carr close, but no cigar in late drive [5:31 AM]
Houston Chronicle reports: '"We were thinking, `Go down and score and go to overtime,' " receiver Corey Bradford said. "From the beginning, we were prepared to go to overtime." A fourth-quarter charge by the Bills made sure that wouldn't happen.'

Marker With Bills driving, Foreman gets his 15 minutes of shame [5:30 AM]
Houston Chronicle reports: '"Me and Jay had been talking all game," Price said. "I had a corner route, and he and Aaron did a great job breaking it up. Then he ran over me and bumped me out. He was in my face and kept yapping. I reacted, but the referee got him. That is what coach (Gregg) Williams tells us to do. Let the other guys do all the yip-yapping. "It was big. Jay had two big penalties on that sequence, and I know they're probably getting on him now, because it allowed us to tie the game up."'

Marker These flag football games delaying forward progress [5:29 AM]
Houston Chronicle reports: '"To win an NFL game, you have got to out-execute your opponent for 60 minutes and we didn't do that," said Texans coach Dom Capers. "The most frustrating thing with today's performance was the penalties. They really hurt us. It's an emotional game. But you can't do that, because the whole team suffers."'

Marker Texans summary [5:28 AM]
Houston Chronicle reports: '"You have to give a lot of the credit to Henry," Texans linebacker Keith Mitchell said. "I played against him when was a rookie, but he's a different back than he was then. He really impressed me."'

Marker Grading the Texans [5:27 AM]
Houston Chronicle reports: 'Eric Moulds got most of the attention in terms of coverage schemes played by the Texans, who tried to double Moulds as much as possible. For the most part, the strategy worked; Moulds didn't catch a pass in the first half and only caught four in the game, although one went for a touchdown. The Texans took more chances with Peerless Price, and he made them pay, catching eight passes for 121 yards and the game-winning touchdown against safety Matt Stevens.'
