Marker Delamielleure unhappy with Haslett [5:03 AM]
Charlotte Observer reports: 'After the 1985 season, Delamielleure was forced from the game, primarily because he couldn't add weight to his 260-pound frame. "I was very bitter; 260 got me into the Hall of Fame, and all of a sudden it's not big enough to play," he said. "No matter how hard I worked out, I couldn't get bigger than that. That last year I was barely hanging on. And guys were cheating but nothing was done until a couple of years later."'

Marker Football team back at LSU [5:02 AM]
Baton Rouge Advocate reports: 'In conjunction with the busy week, the LSU coaches will also host a football coaches clinic from Thursday through Saturday. In addition to Miles, LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini and special teams coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto will be featured speakers. Buffalo Bills special teams coach Bobby April will be the keynote speaker at the clinic, which will be held at the Sheraton Hotel Atrium.'

Marker Going Pro After Leaving the Pros [5:01 AM]
Business Week reports: '"When I walk away from the game, I won't think of it as the end of my career," Troy Vincent says. "I've been looking at different alternatives since the day I was drafted, making sure I kept balanced. I didn't want to be caught off guard."'

Marker Numbers prove Bledsoe most overrated QB ever [7:15 AM]
Lawrence Eagle Tribune reports: 'In fact, rather than comparing himself to Marino and Favre as a passing sensation, I've got two names that he appears more in line with: Jon Kitna and Trent Dilfer.'

Marker Bills Team Report [7:14 AM]
The Sporting News reports: 'It seems the Bills feel Henry's value is higher than the rest of the league.'

Marker Jim Kelly keeps his roots in Western New York with popular summer camp [9:13 AM]
Niagara Gazette reports: '“I am very excited about teaming up with the Buffalo Bills to continue something I love and in the stadium where I spent my career,” Kelly said. “My football camp has always been very special to me, and I truly enjoy working with kids and sharing my passion for the game.”'

Marker Inside slant [6:40 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Ritcher once was listed at 272 pounds in the Bills media guide, but his real playing weight was about 260. He said he played in Super Bowl XXVI at 242. Ritcher said coaches often threatened to replace him with somebody bigger, but he never gave into using steroids, and starred for 14 seasons. He did use nutritional supplements, but gave them up after suffering too many pulled muscles.'

Marker Strategy and personnel [6:39 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Following the departure of Jonas Jennings, Mike Williams might switch to the left side. Either way, Mike Gandy isn't the answer as a starter. The Bills need someone who can step in and play on the left or right side.'

Marker Notes, quotes [6:39 AM]
The Sports Xchange reports: 'Since 1993 when the league began awarding compensatory draft picks for losing free agents, the Bills have been awarded 20 picks, fourth most in the league. Buffalo won't be adding to that total this year, however, as it did not receive any of the 32 picks the league has doled out for the 2005 draft. The Bills moves last year didn't make them eligible for compensation under the formula used. For example, Buffalo did lose star CB Antoine Winfield, but added Pro Bowl veteran CB Troy Vincent.'

Marker Haslett revelation stuns Hull [5:03 AM]
Orlando Sentinel reports: 'But put yourself in Hull's place. You've been out of football since 1996, finally finding peace with losing four consecutive Super Bowls. Then, one day out of the blue, a former teammate throws you under the bus like so...'.

Marker Carrying the message [1:01 PM]
Niagara Gazette reports: 'When it comes to perseverance, it’s not easy being a Christian, nor was it easy for the Bills. “We got our heads caved in four times in a row,” Tasker said, remembering how Coach Marv Levy once said, “What I love about this team is that disappointment doesn’t destroy you, it ticks you off.”'

Marker Ex-Bill DeLamielleure lashes out at Haslett, denies ever taking steroids [5:01 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"I never took one in my life, and if Haslett took them like he said he did, he must have been getting placebos because I played against him and he wasn't that strong," DeLamielleure told host Randy Cross, a former All-Pro guard for the San Francisco 49ers. "And to make a statement like that — I coach high school kids and I'm a personal trainer now and I do some other stuff — it sheds a bad light on you. I've never taken them and I know a lot of guys who played in that era and they never took them."'

Marker Young, unproven QBs figure to draw attention [10:21 PM]
ESPN reports: 'Having been seemingly dormant for weeks, discussions aimed at a swap of Buffalo Bills tailback Travis Henry and Arizona Cardinals offensive tackle L.J. Shelton were revived at the NFL owners meetings this week, and there is a decent shot the proposed trade will be consummated around draft time. The final hurdle: In addition to getting Shelton, who would replace Jonas Jennings as the starting left tackle, Bills general manager Tom Donahoe also wants to switch spots in the second round.'

Marker Frank Reich To Headline At Covenant's Athletic Symposium [9:59 PM]
Chattanooga Chattanoogan reports: 'Mr. Reich is famous for quarterbacking two of the greatest comebacks in college and pro football history. At Maryland, Mr. Reich led the Terrapins back from a 31-0 deficit against Miami, to a 42-40 win. In 1993, the Bills trailed the Houston Oilers in the NFL playoffs 35-3, before a Reich-led comeback resulted in a Bills 41-38 overtime victory. Mr. Reich is now the President of Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, and is on the National Board of Athletes in Action, a ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. He is currently writing two books. Created to Compete examines a Christian worldview of competition and Every Play Counts deals with parenting children through youth sports.'

Marker Losman Already Off and Running [4:11 PM] reports: 'The decision to go with J.P. Losman as our quarterback wasn't immediate. The coaching staff needed some time to look at tape, think it through, and then get away from the offices and take a break. That gave everyone a chance to get their thoughts together. We came back and watched some tape again and just felt if this was our decision that the sooner it happened, the better we could plan the offseason from an offensive perspective. We're always trying to get ready for the offseason and we build it out in stages. The quicker you can do it the better it is for the team.'

Marker Cards still high on Bills’ Henry [3:01 PM]
East Valley Tribune reports: 'Henry said this week it is the Bills who are holding up a straight-up swap between Henry and Cardinals tackle L.J. Shelton. ESPN reported that Buffalo wants to make a switch of second-round picks part of the deal. The Cardinals choose with the 12th pick of the second round (44th overall), while the Bills have the 23rd pick (55th overall).'

Marker The Bills, Bonnies and Bonds [1:09 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'And if you want a bit of a stretch, the Vikings’ secondary coach is Chuck Knox Jr., son of the former Bills’ head coach (1978-82).'

Marker Bulletin Board [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Jon Kitna and former Bills Frank Reich, Don Beebe and Henry Jones will be the star attractions at Athletes in Action's fourth annual Victory Beyond Competition Experience breakfast in the Adam's Mark Hotel.'

Marker Former Bills deny Haslett's charge [5:01 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"Just because (Kent) got stronger and bigger doesn't necessarily mean that he did steroids. When he first came in, I thought Kent was a great center right off the bat. It wasn't like he wasn't going to make the team. (Assistant and NFL Hall of Fame lineman) Jim Ringo said immediately, 'This guy's good.' "He was country boy strong, and if he gained weight, it was from getting older and naturally putting on weight. And it wasn't drastic then."'

Marker Winds of Change [5:00 AM] reports: 'The Bills won’t be on the board until the 55th overall pick. Offensive and defensive lines seem to be the most pressing needs.'

March 24, 2005

Marker Haslett Sparks Steroid Debate [10:43 PM] reports: 'Haslett indirectly implicated Buffalo center Kent Hull as a beneficiary of steroid use. Hull, contacted in Mississippi by D and C sportswriter Leo Roth, denied ever using steroids. They played together for just a few weeks in training camp in 1986. Haslett was later cut by the Bills.'

Marker Haslett Admits To Steroid Use. Hull Denies He Was Involved [3:13 PM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Haslett said they introduced a former Bill and USFL lineman to "the pill" and he went from 270 pounds to 305. Haslett called him probably one of the all time greatest players in Bills history. He did not name the player. Kent Hull told Leo Roth of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle that the accusation is false and he may have to give Haslett a call. Hull says he's never weighed 300 pounds in his life and he resents the implication by Haslett.'

Marker Bledsoe perturbed by perception that 'he's done' [2:32 PM]
ESPN reports: '"So did I get a raw deal? To a certain extent. There was a shift in philosophy that didn't include helping out the quarterback. It does bother me that a lot of the blame for our lack of success was placed right on my shoulders. But I'm never going to be one of those guys who say that I'm being treated unfairly when I'm playing a game for a living. It didn't work out and am I unhappy about that? Yeah. But I'll never say they did me wrong."'

Marker Report: Haslett tried steroids as a player [2:30 PM]
The Sports Network reports: '"Everybody wanted an advantage, so you tried it. I tried it. Everybody tried it," Haslett said.'

Marker Former linebacker Haslett says he used steroids as NFL player [2:29 PM]
AP reports: 'Haslett played in Buffalo from 1979 to 1985, and finished his career in 1987 with the New York Jets. He said he used steroids for one season early in his career. ''It started, really, in Pittsburgh. They got an advantage on a lot of football teams. They were so much stronger (in the) '70s, late '70s, early '80s,'' Haslett said. ''They're the ones who kind of started it.'''

Marker Bills' Mularkey expects to Henry to report for camp [2:17 PM]
AP reports: '''I know he's frustrated,'' Mularkey told reporters during the NFL owners meetings in Hawaii this week. ''We have done everything we can to really honor his request for a trade. ... If it doesn't happen, Travis has a contract with us and is required to be here when camps come around. But I think there's still time.'''

Marker Reports: Saints coach Haslett admits to steroid use [1:41 PM]
Sportsticker reports: '"I didn't think it (steroids) was very good for you," Haslett told the Los Angeles Times. "I was hyper all the time. Got bloated, a fat face. But if you didn't (take steroids), you weren't as strong as everybody else, you weren't as fast as everybody else."'

Marker Ex-Bills star denies taking steroids [1:40 PM]
Rochester D&C reports: '"I have never weighed 300 pounds in my freaking life, even now when I’m retired,’’ Hull said.'

Marker Owners vote yes for safety [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Cardinals are offering left tackle L.J. Shelton, but the Bills apparently don't feel they are getting a fair exchange with the player-for-player deal. Green is intrigued by Henry's skills. "I think he's tough as hell," Green said. "He's got exceptional balance, which allows a guy to get a lot of yardage. He's smart but powerful, compact, very difficult to tackle. I think he's a good player."'

Marker Vikings spend offseason collecting ex-Bills [8:51 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"We were really pleased that they wanted to come play for us," Tice said. "Of course, Ted was instrumental in a lot of that because these guys want to come back and play for Ted again."'
