Marker Analysis: Playoffs might determine Bills coaching search [5:20 PM]
AP reports: 'Depending on Donahoe's level of interest, the Bills search could extend into next month after the Super Bowl if the Patriots and/or Rams make it that far. Where any of the three candidates rank on the Bills' list is uncertain. But that Donahoe has yet to make his selection while four other teams have already hired a new coach this past week is an indication that at least one of the still-employed assistants is in the running.'

Marker Donahoe looks closely at coordinators [5:19 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Donahoe is strongly considering Weis, who developed such stars as Curtis Martin, Ben Coates and Tom Brady. If New England (14-2), which has home-field advantage throughout the postseason, advances all the way to the Super Bowl on Feb. 1, Donahoe said he’d be willing to wait it out. “If it’s the right guy and you feel you have to wait, then you better wait,” he said.'

Marker Assembly of the Coaching Staff Remains Incomplete [5:18 AM]
Washington Post reports: 'Although Gibbs did not specify the problems, new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams -- recently fired as head coach of the Buffalo Bills -- is expected to try obtaining at least two former assistants: defensive coordinator Jerry Gray, possibly to coach the secondary, and defensive line coach Tim Krumrie. Gibbs noted that assistant coaches whose bosses had been fired were not free to seek other jobs if they were still under contract to their teams.'

Marker Gibbs' first task: Filling his staff [5:17 AM]
Washington Times reports: 'The Redskins' hiring of Williams as defensive coordinator might have been their biggest coup. Despite a failed three-year stint as head coach in Buffalo, Williams was in high demand this week for his defensive prowess..."I have some real good friends who coached with him," Gibbs said. "It's one of those things where you kind of know his reputation. And when he became available, I think almost everybody was talking to him."'

Marker Fassel Might Not Find Job [5:13 AM]

Among the other top candidates are Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and former Bears coach Dick Jauron, whom Coughlin hopes to interview to be his defensive coordinator.'

Chicago Tribune reports: 'Fassel is still a candidate in Buffalo but is said to be trailing former Bears coach Dick Jauron, a favorite of Bills ownership.'

Marker Ex-Texas star Gray wants NFL position [5:11 AM]

Marker Gray should matter to Longhorns [1:36 PM]
Austin American Statesman reports: 'When Reese announced his resignation Tuesday after six seasons at Texas, it set in motion a chain of events that could return Gray to Texas, where he was an All-America safety in 1983 and 1984. Gray said Wednesday he is very interested in becoming the Longhorns' new defensive coordinator, but he understandably remains hopeful that he will land the vacant head coaching position with the Buffalo Bills after a solid three-hour interview with General Manager Tom Donahoe. After all, Gregg Williams, who was fired by the Bills as head coach after going 17-31 in three seasons, was making $900,000 a year. No college pays that much for a defensive coordinator. Not yet anyway.'

Marker Levy's the answer to age-old question : Bears need the old Bill-coach [1:35 PM]
Chicago Sun Times reports: Levy is a Chicago guy. He has analyzed the Bears, written about them. He knows Bear weather, and in similar stuff, he took the Buffalo Bills to four consecutive Super Bowls. And he wants the job. So why don't the Bears seem to be interested in him? He's 78.'

Marker Gray likes Texas job, if NFL bid fails [1:34 PM]
Fort Worth Star Telegram reports: 'Gray, an All-American at Texas in 1983-84, said he has no interest in rejoining Williams, who was hired Wednesday as the Washington Redskins' defensive coordinator, as a position coach. Gray indicated that he's interested only in NFL jobs as a defensive coordinator or head coach.'

Marker On the seventh day, the Bills pondered [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'Presuming Fassel is not invited back for another interview, the Bills probably are looking at Dick Jauron, Charlie Weis or Mularkey as the top candidates among those already interviewed.'

Marker No clear favorites to coach the Bills [5:30 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'The next step, Donahoe said, is sharing all the information on the candidates he has collected with team owner Ralph Wilson and assistant general manager Tom Modrak for their input and advice. That step begins Thursday morning. After all the data has been crunched and the questions answered, only then will Donahoe present a contract offer to somebody, he said.'

Marker Snyder gets best of Jets again [5:27 AM]
New York Daily News reports: 'Herman Edwards acknowledged that Williams, whom he interviewed last Friday for the same job, was "high on our list." Instead of pouncing on Williams, the most qualified candidate, Edwards proceeded to interview other coaches.'

Marker Fassel's hopes are sinking fast [5:26 AM]
New York Post reports: 'This past Monday Fassel was in Buffalo interviewing for the Bills vacancy. A scheduled interview with the Bears was put on hold but might come next week.'

Marker 'Skins stick it to Jets again [5:25 AM]
New York Post reports: 'Williams, recently fired as the Bills' head coach, interviewed with Herman Edwards last Friday and was not only considered very high on the list to replace Ted Cottrell at defensive coordinator but he was believed to be the team's top choice. Sources inside Weeb Ewbank Hall yesterday characterized Edwards as disconcerted by the news of Williams going to Washington, indicating that Williams was the coach he was targeting.'

Marker Jets Keep Looking [5:24 AM]
New York Newsday reports: 'Coach Herman Edwards acknowledged disappointment but said he never offered Williams the job. Edwards preferred to interview other candidates rather than make a hasty decision. "If you only interview one guy, you never learn about the other four guys," he said. "To me, they're all in the mix and they're all really good coaches."'

Marker Defensive Choice Has Gotten Away [5:23 AM]
New York Newsday reports: 'Coughlin was to interview former Bills coach Gregg Williams tomorrow and probably would have hired him, but Joe Gibbs' Redskins signed Williams yesterday.'
