Buffalo Bills News - October 30, 2003

Marker Donahoe gives Bills a vote of confidence [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"I'm pleased with all of our coaches, I really am," Donahoe said. "I'm pleased with the fact they're together. I'm pleased with the fact they're working hard. I'm pleased with the fact they're trying to find out, "OK, we've got eight games in. We've got a lot of tape, information. Let's take this week, see what are we doing wrong.' . . . That's what you do as a good coach and a good staff, and I'm pleased with that."'

Marker Firing head coach is never a quick fix [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'I think a midseason switch, in their view, is much more a case of giving up on the season than trying to save it. If Williams were fired, assistant head coach Dick LeBeau would be the obvious interim replacement. He has the experience. He's a good man. But LeBeau lived through the interim experience in 2000 in Cincinnati. I'm certain he would advise holding off on a change as long as possible.'

Marker Donahoe says no one's being fired [5:15 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '“I understand you guys (the media) have a job to do and that’s part of your job. But it doesn’t go on here. We don’t sit around all day after a bad game and say, ‘OK, who’s fault was this?’ We lost as a team the other day. As a TEAM. Two weeks ago against Washington, we won as a team. And that really is our approach to everything in this building.”'

Marker Bills look to activate McGahee [5:14 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: '“If the feeling is that come Nov. 5 that he’s not ready to play, but he might be in a couple of weeks, he could be on the 53 and he’s just one of your eight inactive guys until everybody feels ‘OK, let’s put him in a game.’”'

Marker Ex-Lion, wife shared fight against cancer [5:13 AM]
Lansing State Journal reports: 'The parents of four children took on the juggling act in 1998 - when Stefanie Spielman was diagnosed with breast cancer and her husband announced that he would take a year off from professional football. He was then playing for the Buffalo Bills.'

Marker Bills May Activate McGahee [5:12 AM] reports: 'He was cleared to practice two weeks ago and the Bills have until November fifth to either activate McGahee or place him on injured reserve.'

Marker Brown: Perfect Timing For Bye Week [5:11 AM] reports: '"It's just going to take commitment to the team and everyone pulling their weight focusing on what their job is and doing it and not doing too much. It's easy to turn this around. We can easily turn this around. If we start handing the ball off to Travis Henry, he seems to be hot, and we keep getting the ball to him and let him do his thing it will all fall into place."'

Marker Donahoe backs coach; calls it `gut-check' time for Bills [7:42 PM]
AP reports: '''I think we're in a gut-check period for this team and this staff and this organization,'' Donahoe said. ''And I'm confident we're going to come out of this and get this thing going in the right direction because I believe in the people that we have doing it.'''

Marker Thomas among those inducted in Buffalo hall of fame [7:42 PM]
AP reports: '''It's just not the old Bills that used to play around here,'' Thomas said, recalling many of his former teammates, such as Jim Kelly, Andre Reed and Bruce Smith. ''It doesn't seem like anybody's stepping up to the forefront right now and being a leader.'''

Marker Bills leaning toward activating McGahee [3:38 PM]
AP reports: '``We probably would be leaning that way,'' Donahoe said. ``We can activate him, but it doesn't mean he has to dress. The thing that you probably do not want to do with Willis is put him back on IR because then he can't practice.'''

Marker Bills Alumni Spotlight: Reggie McKenzie [2:22 PM] reports: When the Bills chose offensive guard Reggie McKenzie during the 1972 NFL draft, they knew they were getting a consensus All-American and they also knew they were getting a two-time All-Big Ten selection, who had played in two Rose Bowl games. What they didn’t know, was that they were also getting an unquestionable team leader and a player that would be nearly as dependable as the sun rising in the east for the next 11 years.

Marker Players take blame for woes [8:53 AM]
Buffalo News reports: '"It's all on the players," Adams said. "Gregg is the head coach, and he'll take the brunt, but it's not his fault. Look at us. A good head coach will take responsibility. He's taking responsibility. But the burden lies on our heads."'

Marker Back to the drawing board [8:52 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'With a record of 4-4, the Bills' playoff hopes are far from dead. But they probably will have to go 6-2 in the second half of the season - and win all three of their remaining AFC East games - to make the playoffs. Given their ugly performances in each of their last three losses, it obviously will take a stunning turnaround to do it.'

Marker Bledsoe Sr. teaches parenting [5:15 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Drew Bledsoe recalled being intimidated as a New England Patriot by the sight of Buffalo Bills defensive end Bruce Smith in the tunnel of Rich Stadium before the start of Bledsoe’s first NFL game. However, he said, the intimidation of being a new parent was worse. “All of a sudden, there was a life … I was responsible for,” Bledsoe said.'

Marker Should Williams go? [5:14 AM]
WGRZ-TV reports: 'His team simply isn’t tough enough mentally, which is something he vowed he would have when coming here from his previous stint as defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans.'

Marker The Bills Begin The Bye Week With Gregg Williams At The Helm [5:13 AM]
WGR-AM reports: 'Gregg Williams was front and center at Tuesday's Bills practice. That pretty much tells us he'll be on the sideline a week from Sunday in Dallas.'

Marker Bills RB Henry feels underutilized in red zone [6:10 PM]
AP reports: '''Man, I don't know. I'm searching for answers myself,'' Henry said. ''You would think I would get the ball in certain situations in which I'm not getting it.'''

Marker Bills' Milloy fined $25,000 for knocking over official [6:09 PM]
AP reports: 'The NFL said it happened during a running play in the third quarter in which Milloy made ''impermissible physical contact with a game official.'''

Marker Burning Questions [6:08 PM]
CNN/SI reports: 'Which big-name QB isn't getting it done?'

Marker Buffalo Bills at Midseason [3:42 PM] reports: 'In all, 14 NFL teams have between four and six wins (only the 8-0 Chiefs have more than that) and only five AFC teams have more wins than the Bills.'

Marker Bills add Toyota to sponsors list [3:06 PM]
Business First of Buffalo reports: 'The car maker will also receive marketing exposure in parking lots surrounding the stadium with each lot bearing the name of a different Toyota vehicle and Toyota brands will be identified on all parking passes for each area.'

Marker Bills and Toyota Announce Partnership [3:05 PM] reports: 'The Bills announced that the team has reached a multi-year agreement with Toyota that makes the company the official car and truck of the Buffalo Bills.'

Marker The Bills still have time to correct flaws [2:03 PM]
Olean Times Herald reports: 'Still, it’s worth noting that Kansas City was also 8-8 last year and the only significant changes from 2002 are the addition of three defensive starters: end Vonnie Holliday (Green Bay), linebacker Shawn Barber (Philadelphia) and cornerback Dexter McCleon (St. Louis). That trio hardly compares to the Bills’ off-season signings ... especially Spikes, Milloy and Adams.'

Marker Williams avoids queries on job status [8:55 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'The Bills have not played to their potential for much of the season. The Bills have a very good game against Washington and an uninspiring overtime victory over Cincinnati to show for the last six weeks. Players haven't seemed to completely embrace his approach, which might explain why the Bills often seem as if they're going in different directions, especially when they get behind. Buffalo's latest effort might have been the ugliest.'

Marker Now is time to say bye to Williams [8:54 AM]
Buffalo News reports: 'It's not going to get any better with Williams and Gilbride. The old poker player has to realize he's holding a bad pair. Time for Donahoe to throw in his hand.'

Marker Weary Bills need a lot more than rest [5:15 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'With eight games to play, there is time to salvage the season but the challenge is daunting. Buffalo’s final eight opponents are a combined 34-23.'

Marker Where do the Buffalo Bills go from here? [5:14 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Hey, fans and media can’t feel foolish for believing this team was playoff worthy. Some of the biggest names in the national media picked them to win the Super Bowl. I mean, three years into the Tom Donahoe-Gregg Williams Era, and the dots were starting to connect. How did we know that once you connected all those dots, the image formed would be of a guy wrapping his fingers around his throat?'

Marker Buffalo Bills replay [5:13 AM]
Rochester D&C reports: 'Never mind Dallas’ suspect record. Ponder this: The coaching matchup is Bill Parcells vs. Gregg Williams.'

Marker One play at a time [5:12 AM]
Pittsburgh Morning Sun reports: '"The main thing was that it was nice to know that the organization had confidence in me and that they wanted me to be their guy for a number of years to come," he said. "To be able to come into a season that way was a plus as opposed to the first two seasons not knowing what my future would be."'

Marker Inside slant [5:11 AM]
CBS Sportsline reports: 'The Bills have come unglued in every phase, especially on the road where they have now been outscored 85-15 in their last three games away from Ralph Wilson Stadium - at Miami, at the Jets and at Kansas City.'
